I still don't feel like the grudge you have against steam has been properly justified. It still comes across as an emotional response, not a rational one.

It feels like when Hitbox was around, and 30% of twitch went all "FUCK TWITCH THEY'RE FASCISTS" but ended up back on twitch a few months later because the platform is better. Sure, competition is good, but I'd sooner take a look at the store model itself for criticism than just claiming the most popular one is evil. There's a reason it became popular, and it probably isn't devil worship.

I enjoy that steam feels like it isn't fuelled by exclusivity. I have origin because battlefield exclusives. I have epic because fortnite. I have blizzard because all the blizzard. If I could have all of these things on one platform, I'd do that... but I have the most things on steam because it has become "everything else" instead of "this exclusive you want and a bunch of other shit you don't care about"

At least nintendo have their exclusives right, where there's a TON of nintendo titles that are fantastic and provide a unique experience.

-e- also, given that this is not a serious discussion space, "I just feel like shitting on steam" is a valid enough reason to shit on steam.

I think a lot of the "problems" with steam talked about in the media are a bit overblown. Shovelware is an issue but a small one at best. The platform still is, by and large, good for a lot of developers, publishers, and consumers.

That said, Epic's foray into becoming a bigger player in the space is not unwelcome. It's better for developers, as they now have the ability to choose a smaller platform for a potentially higher cut of the revenue of their game. More choice is always better in this case. Unfortunately, the majority of consumers are lazy fucks who now rely on the centralized experience of buying and playing games through the Steam platform, and are thus losing out on this deal, hence the review-bombing of Metro and such.

Steam isn't fuelled by exclusivity in terms of contract negotiations, they just have such a hegemony on the PC userbase that, until Epic came out with their store platform, there was no competitive alternative for any non-AAA developer to publish their game on. Yes, GOG exists, and so on, but they were never a true alternative given that their user numbers pale in comparison to Steam's.

i get that the idea isnt "fuck dev teams its the people in charge!" but i really sort of loathe the general sentiment of "fuck stockholders" as if theres a huge slough of people out there making poor decisions

in reality, its just a symptom of the current way that the structure of companies work where few people at the top make decisions that get translated poorly down to the dev teams without their voices being heard

for reference, im a shareholder of VISA and heres their latest voting bloc for common share holders

https://central.proxyvote.com/pv/iagn

as well as their annual report and statements

https://materials.proxyvote.com/Approved/92826C/20181130/NPS_377688.PDF

theres really no say or power in this, blaming share holders or something as a general statement isnt good

you're disingeniously reducing the argument down to this idea that people just want to use steam out of laziness. steam does offer the most features out of any of the other launchers or storefronts. epic is sorely lacking in what should be industry standard features, such as user reviews and cloud saves. some people who bought games on epic and encountered technical issues had to go to the steam forums for that game for technical support.

but people are also not happy that metro was effectively advertised on the steam store for months, and then pulled at the last moment. there are also apparent security issues with epic's client. if metro was announced as an epic exclusive from the very beginning, the backlash wouldn't be as big. division 2 is releasing on epic instead of steam (although you can still buy it straight from Ubisoft).

My dislike of Steam is pretty simple: It is a company that has sat on its success for a long time and has not addressed a large number of problems on its platform(review bombing, developers not being able to control their steam forums). I don’t hate them. I’m just happy to see other companies give them a run for their money.

If other people like it, that is fine.

They literally patched the store to adress review bombing, I don't know how you can say they never adressed it, even if you don't like their solution. There is no simple fix. And developers being in control of their own forums seems like a drawback not a bonus.

Review bombing is still a problem in the year of our lord 2018. So, yes, I don’t like the solution because it didn’t solve the problem. Users reviews in reality, kinda garbage.

And developers would like to be able to control the forums to keep racism out of there. Like For Honor, who had this really cool white supremacy group that got all up in the steam forums and the developers had a real tough time banning them.

I'm not this big consumer rights guy who values user reviews or forums where people buying the game can air their grievances right next to the store page.

It's a shame you don't like user reviews, I've always found them to be pretty useful when informing me of whether to purchase certain games. I avoided MH:W for a while because there were apparently problems at launch which they eventually fixed. I will sort of point out that you need to do some digging to find useful information but a couple friendly people also provide some tech advice, like options that improve performance, or how to get it to run on a certain OS.

Here is the thing. I got that same information from the MH:W subreddit and other forums. The user mostly contain information I’ve obtained someplace else in the past. So I don’t really value them. So to me, they are not worth the negative impact.

Steam reviews are helpful even if it's getting bombed cuz you can just read the reviews...

If every negative review is "they flattened my waifus ass!" Or "the new characters skin tone is a shade too dark for this time period" then you know that the game is probably good.

If the supposed answer to review bombing is no reviews, review bombing is the much better alternative.

Either way, the problem was clearly adressed, whether you liked the answer or not.

I don't understand how you can think user reviews are garbage. when you buy stuff on amazon, do you not look at product ratings and reviews? Are you literally against user reviews because review bombing is possible? I don't see any practicable way of outright preventing viewbombing. Steam introduced a feature allowing you to see the game's review history, therefore making it obvious to see where reviewbombing has happened. It's then up to the diligent buyer to look further into why the game is being bombed. I honestly expected you to be a consumer rights guy. Why are you against people being able to air their grievances against a product that they have bought?

Also, I was under the impression that developers were in charge of moderating their game hub's forums, and had the tools they needed to (from deleting posts to banning users)
