I do sort of wonder how many games will be exclusive to particular launchers actually. If it's a bunch, then the problems of a monopoly don't really disappear for the consumer right?

at some point, like passive says, we will enter a situation youll have to pay activision $10 a month to play their games, rockstar $10 a month for theirs, etc... (or more)

EA already does that and while is not that bad (pretty cheap) you still need to buy their games

I wouldn't hate having to do that provided there's a lot of variety in what I get to play but the implementation needs to be pretty stellar. I wonder when we'll start seeing pilot projects for it. Maybe that could be the thing a big publisher could try to find a competitive edge, unless someone's already started. Humble Monthly's kind of a similar concept with what they claim to be 450k users.

Although it's not entirely the same type of thing, since Humble Monthly isn't for games they actually own/publish. But on the other hand, 450k users is still a decent income.

Most Metro games are on steam but exodus will be on epic, most dragon age games are on steam but Inquisition is on origin, etc, etc.

Just add them all to steam?

Honestly this graphic says it all imo. Competition is good, but when u have no choice but to go with one store for a game, I don't call that competition

In less video game news: I took an elevator up 5 flights of stairs to retrieve a sharpie to mark some samples with, found the new technician we've hired, and she laughed at me for going up 5 flights of stairs to retrieve something I could've just bought in one of the store.

But like... the sharpie's still in good shape. Why buy another one? ;__;

(and then I realized I didn't even have a sharpie upstairs but don't wanna go tell her that lmao)

three quarters of that story make me go wtf

why does this story start out promising like ith meeting a cute girl and doesn't deliver?
why not take the steps? you're at uni, it's not like there ain't the time to do that.
why laugh about saving money and the environment? maybe it's good that this doesn't end romantically.

not telling her I'm torn on, would have made for a good second laugh tho... And it's not like you'd want to meet her again but w/e, I'll give that to you

5/5 story, many questionable moments and a sharp plot twist right at the start with a happy ending.
cant ask for more three sentences.

I'll answer these questions in order:

1) I bumped into her in the elevator, she had a reason to use it though. Was lugging something really heavy
2) I'm lazy for weird things
3) It's more like.. she was stunned I'd bother to travel around for a sharpie since she thinks I have better things to do. We don't usually use the lab in question, but we have had to move there due to construction recently.

Tbh the main ones here that are important:
- Cloud saves
- Mod distribution
- Item trading
- Account sharing

The rest strike me as fluff. Why does Steam need to be able to stream? Or share screenshots?

the storefront itself is also pretty ass, there's no search function and the way games are presented on their front page is not great

Steam forums are actually far from 'fluff'.
A lot of devs and games use them as a way to help users troubleshoot issues, perhaps not AAA big boy devs but they're definitely used to help fix issues for a lot of indie devs and others.

Also the Epic store is effectively always-online DRM as far as I know. Steam offline play might've been shit ages ago but it works fine now, which is nice for a lot of people.

Family / account sharing is also pretty big. Being able to "Hey, you can play this game off my account to demo it or play it in full" is quite nice. I've used it in both directions a good number of times.

Glad to see quite a few fellow LD-ers of a similar mind on the issue. I welcome new competitors, but reject "Evil corporation Volvo" narratives.

Surely reviews are anything but fluff? While review bombs are a thing, you can see the review history of the game and spot review bombs pretty easily to make your own judgement.

In-home streaming is nice too, it allows you to have a couch gaming setup without needing a dedicated computer next to your TV.

I believe that when I bought MuvLuv and Alternative to support the official translation, there was an issue with the store/licensing, so they had to relaunch the games. The forums were how they kept the community updated on when the games would get re-released and information about the content restoration.

Sure this stuff happens like once in a very long time (none of my friends have really seen this yet) but honestly I really appreciated I could stay on Steam to get news, instead of tweeting around. Particularly when it wasn't really clear whether it was an issue with the localization or the dev.
