I’m sure it is a little of both. The developer complaints about Steam have been building for years and it’s pretty obvious it doesn’t take that much money for them to leave Steam behind. That 30% is hard to justify when you consider how little Valve does.

Valve does not "do little" tho.

Maybe they take more %, but they give players complete access to a shit ton of community features seamlessly. And that also benefits developers.

So yeah, they are just being greedy.

Developers don't like steams "features". Most developers have to build match making, chat and other services into their games on their own, so Valves are not that useful and the developers have less control over them. And a lot, if not all, developers dislike the user reviews system it is an place for angry shit heads to review bomb a game for dumb reasons. And Valve hasn't addressed any of those complaints for years, because Valve likes the shit heads money and doesn't care about the developer.

sources for these claims?

Hi!

Game developer with game available on steam, here!

No complaints from me! Having a massive platform that allows people to find your game is -infinitely- better than attempting to self-publish. Bonus points, there are communication / feedback systems that people -actually use-, which is, you know, helpful.

No employee of valve has ever given me a handjob. I don't lament valve/steam not having competition, but you go riiiiight ahead and self-publish a game independantly and pretend that 30% cut you're avoiding doesn't ultimately mean less sales and less profit.

Disclaimer - the game I worked on on steam was originally self-published, sold about 600 copies. On steam, I don't have the exact figure, but is somewhere in the ballpark of 5x that?

(This post is disjointed and ugly but w/e)

Any system where users can actually review something is better than any system where they can't.

I don't care if there's sometimes problems with review bombing when the overall usefulness is very good for the consumer. Not to mention it now shows the scores over time allowing you to see if the problems have been fixed or if it was just one big spike of angry reviews, meaning you can precisely see if it was just a review bomb and not a reflection of the quality of the game.

But hey, valve hasn't addressed it at all for years, right?

But yeah, it's hip to shit on steam, disregarding how their cut isn't anything out of the usual compared to other people distributing stuff online, obviously people competing with valve is now trying to compete with valve's cut, but fact is that their cut isn't something insanely out of the ordinary for digital distribution, especially not for an absolutely massive storefront like steam.

valve not having a monopoly but competition is good !

it literally matters not why theyre leaving or why they would stay with steam, it can only develop positively and i like epic for that

Shitting on steam is VERY hip right now.
Just saw a post on Twitter of someone accusing valve of "weaponizing their audience" over metro: exodus being pulled from the steam store.
Basically saying that Valve is asking their audience to harass the metro dev's lol

idk why its even being discussed, someone explain to me why valve not having a monopoly but competition could possibly be a bad thing?

Is it competition when one item is not accessible in other place?

That's the thing most people are mad at, gog was just another platform and people really didn't care, Origin did create some kind of shit with their games but they are also their own games so it kinda get a pass

Because i doubt developers will put more competitive prices if their item is still accessible in just 1 store, you are still force to buy it in 1 place.

It's annoying because gaming platforms are gonna turn into TV/Movie media where you need to be subscribed to six different platforms to be able to get what you want.

well except that the platforms are for free
if u had to pay 1€ for a movie, but netflix/amazon prime were free, would u care if u bought the movie on netflix or prime?

then again i also heard that there are plans by amazon to basically make a netflixesque gaming service so who knows

I just don't like having to dig through a bunch of launchers to find out where the game I want to play is hosted.
Most Metro games are on steam but exodus will be on epic, most dragon age games are on steam but Inquisition is on origin, etc, etc.

Epic also doesn't have regional pricing, which is a problem for those in less affluent countries
