I'd imagine it matters because you can just fit more transistors into your chips which may let you do things "better" in some way but VLSI isn't something I'm too familiar with. They opened up a course on it the year I graduated although it's not likely that course would've gone too deeply into the impacts of feature size vs transistor performance since it was just undergrad and likely wanted to cover the basics.
Still be interesting to see how big a performance gap would be on either a per-transistor or per-cluster basis. I think smaller features/transistors also consume less power so they might design boards around that as well. iirc Intel pushed back the 10nm a year-ish because of reliability issues which I think has to do with the lithography process (I think due to resolution which is controlled by frequency of light?). Lithography is basically where you shine light through a mask which then lets you either keep, or remove features because of a reaction by a material to the light. It's a pretty old technology in theory but is great for silicon-based materials due to the consistency. It's also a technology manufacturers have been trying to perfect over time so they don't have to worry about wasted products.

Well, AMD is saying they're gonna have a 7 nm server chip next year. Intel said they will have a 10 nm coming late next year. Just shocked AMD may finally pull ahead in something

Yeah we'll see if there won't be any delays to that. Manufacturing is when things may screw up at a moment's notice. I would also be curious to know how they change architecture to go around that if they succeed with 7nm.

I heard that the naming conventions for process shrinks no longer have much basis in reality and intel's 10nm process (which they continue to fail at) is similar in technological prowess and generation to AMD (and other org's) 7nm process.

AMD's 7nm process is a hybrid between 7 and 14nm where the main CPU cores are 7nm but things like the I/O bus and caches are 14nm still.
so no one (except Apple?) are down to true 7nm yet

I think the biggest AMD news was their improved glue so they can smash together dies to their hearts content now.
Intel looks pretty much out of any server market to me. I don't know how they stay in the competition.
I think the core count/server/prosumer focus is smart so they don't have to invest so heavily on combating the intel/nvidia propaganda machines.

Fun fact: no foreign leaders are coming to Poland to take part in our 100y of independence celebration (even Orban didn't bother). A few years ago when we were celebrating 25y since the fall of communism even Obama visited Poland. Our foreign relations under the current administration are a joke.
