Squeenix still baffles me. Goes from 2 hyper prolific rpg companies to a single company that releases titles at like, 10% of the speed and half the quality.

I’m still waiting for them to finish FFXV so I can play it again and see what they did after that weird thing came out. The game had some many things that I found compelling, except the story. But if they made an entire series of road trip RPGs where I bum around some fantasy country side in a shitty van/car with friends and camped, I would be all over that.

All they appear to be doing is writing DLC side stories until summer 2019. Not sure that'll make it a complete game though.

(J)rpgs in general are in a wierd state really. I feel like the broadening into 3d space and cleaner graphics actually hurt the genre more than helped. Oldschool classic battle JRPGs felt more like math problems and nerdy stat micromanagement in front of a story. Bringing jrpg titles into an action-oriented space hasn't actually stuck for me yet.

Titles like Horizon or The Witcher feel like better explorations of that space - ff15, as an example, doesn't feel like an RPG for me.

I agree that JRPG makers had mastered pre-3D game design a lot better than they have post 3d, but I don't think that's all of it. I can understand why the transition would slow a company down - just look at Nihon Falcom and their issues getting Trails of Cold Steel out and the Pseudo3d -> Full 3d being an explanation for a lot of the underlying issues (Basically went from psp to ps3 level graphics).

But Square went full 3d in like, 1997 with FF7. They went from a bit less than 1 FF game per year (11 from 87-2002) to releasing 4 mainline games in the 16 years since they merged with enix. One of those, 14, was so bad they had to do a full remake of it, 13 having major issues, and 15 being halfway acknowledged as being "incomplete" on release. That's not even mentioning the various other non traditional jrpg series they had like Parasite Eve, Musashi, SaGa, etc. that they've mostly abandoned since the merger.

I think a lot of the difference with more recent JRPGs is just that Enix and Square combined and started making far fewer games. Atlus seems to be doing just fine with traditional JRPGs, and Falcom's post-CS1 games have been very good (Xanadu, Ys 8, though they're more ARPGS than turnbased JRPGs).

It seems really common for a studio to get bought out, then for a ton of their key talent to leave and go make a new studio, at least in the west (that generally winds up flopping because they traded all financial sense for game design), but no idea if that happened at Square/Enix when they merged.

My argument is that the z-axis interaction is more often a hindrance to game development in "traditional" RPGs rather than an asset. Ff7 was 3d, sure, but it never actually uses the Z-axis for much of anything. Art style of 3d vs 2d is an argument worth having, because both sides have their merits and I -think- 3d wins out in the long run... but as for actually designing a game in 3d space it isn't something Square seems to have a handle on meaningfully exploring.

Faruko is right, and Xenoblade Chronicles is an excellent example of a 3D RPG that feels like it actually uses its dimensional space. There are a lot of places where you go over/around/above/below, have monsters approach you from all sides, and can use distances and positioning in combat to optimize your effectiveness.

Compare that to FF10, which I'm quite confident you could make a "demake" of with a SNES-era art style and have very few experiences of the game you couldn't quite faithfully reproduce in 2d. I'm not saying FF10 is a bad game because of it - in fact, FF10 is one of my favourite RPGs. It also stands as an excellent example of a "3d" game that isn't actually using its 3d space.

Yeah, that's true even for FF12+13(the z interaction there is almost none). The only truly traditional JRPG I can call to mind that uses it is Persona 5, and then it's not a combat element so much as some of the dungeons involve lots of climbing for puzzles. Things like Dark Souls, Ys, etc. use it by letting it be an extra element of dodging (and level design).

Some of the most puzzling parts of FF15 when I played it were figuring out wtf they wanted me to do with Noctis' throwing his sword so he could start hanging from random objects.

Xenoblade 2 is currently the only reason I can think of to go get a switch like right this second. I've heard it's worse than 1, but I'm still intrigued. BoTW can easily be emulated if I want to, and none of the other exclusives are that interesting to me yet (SMT5 will almost certainly change my mind).

1.12
They already announced this ages ago

1.12 coupled with periodical opening of raids makes the most sense too, so i'm happy it's what they went with.
From the Ghastly Eyrie I can see to the ends of the world, and from this vantage point I declare with utter certainty that this one is in the bag!

I've read that AC odyssey has a very convincing open world and it's so open, that some reviewers think it too open and a bit tedious when forced to do 20h of side quests to advance the story (understandably).
I for myself am rather hyped about it.

It is the people who claim they are not racist and don’t see race, but also see race as a defining characteristic of the fictional character on TV.
