I keep wanting to upgrade my PC but intel continually refuse to release an actual improvement in processor tech since the core ix-2x00 generation

Just buying another GPU is hard to justify because I know i'd never reuse it in a new build when actually improved CPU's eventually come out.

well they came out with tri-gate transisters for their CPU's which is pretty big. They're reaching physical limitations for that kind of stuff

no, they are making excuses and sucking ass
gpu tech got unexpectedly stalled on their current process node and are ending up skipping a whole generation which really hurts, and they are still are improving performance many times faster than intel.

no
i've never done game design either but that doesn't mean I can't complain when game designers tread water.

mine, almost certainly if I applied proper cooling and was comfortable running it at voltages that likely lower it's lifespan somewhat.

also if I felt the need.

GPU's were better at hashing for bitcoin mining but that doesn't mean they're superior to a CPU overall. GPU's are more application specific.

game design is treading water not due to CPU performance, but due to the existence of consoles. Wheras CPU performance has improved maybe 25% over the last 5 years, GPU performance has about quadrupled, there's no reason not to pick up a new GPU

I neither implied that GPUs were superior to CPUs nor implied that game design in general was treading water, much less due to CPU progress being limited.

I stated that GPUs are improving faster than CPUs. And that I don't need to be an experienced asic or game designer to criticize asic or game design progress.

Certain aspects of game design are indeed not progressing as we'd like, it's true.

I have a 670, it's nothign spicy but most "graphically demanding" games are actually just unoptimized shit or I don't want to play them anyway so i'm trying to hold out.

i don't feel like game design has been hardware-limited for awhile, gimmicks aside, it's more an issue of trying to anticipate success based on past success... kind of like in the film industry

think that's game engine design

game design has little to do with hardware limitations as it's an application of concept

This is 100% true. If you don't play AAA games and focus on the smaller stuff, there is a lot of cool shit out there trying new stuff.

one hopes that with new graphics APIs and new engines such as source 2/unreal 4, we might see some progression in terms of visual fidelity but I guess games built around these things won't be releasing for at least another year

Also with the new engines and graphics, they are reaching at point where the cost of making content makes it hard to innovate. Huge games cost almost as much as big budget movies not and its hard to change it up if your not betting on a sure thing.

generally, a new engine is designed to lower the costs of making content substantially.

Yep, I think this is why indie games have been so popular recently - it's easier to explore new ideas to tickle our fancy when there's less commitment required to the art assets. If a company has to spend millions of dollars developing gorgeous graphics, then they feel like they have to follow their market research so they can guarantee they are going to get their money back - they are less willing to innovate and try truly crazy stuff, because the cost of failure is so high.

I just purchase whole desktops put together by some nerds, as in not the premade HP pavilion PC's and shit like that from large electronics stores but ones put together by a small company specalized in doing just that.

This time I (my friend) hand picked all the parts but I still had someone else put it together for me, got some pretty high end parts now and a big case with lot of space to expand so I'm expecting this to last quite a few years and once I do need a upgrade I can just switch a new gpu in myself instead of buying a whole new desktop. My previous rigs were of the low/medium price variation so upgrading single parts didn't make much sense to me then.

I also recycle my old rig to my sister for 20% of what I paid for it originally instead of just tossing it, so she can play her Bioware RPG's n shit.

Its really not hard to put things together (physically) - the more difficult thing is finding good deals and figuring what you want to put in it.

Its why I am interested in stuff like No-Man's Sky, Ori and The Blind Forest and multiplayer games like Dreadnought. They may be smaller games, but they are doing new things and won't be forced to sell 10 million copies to break even. And they all sound or are amazing for different reasons.

now sounds like a sweet time to mention that as semi-indie games go, crowfall looks outright amazing
