Its the US. Our country is extremely hard to get some visas. It also depends on the country and there is a large illegal immigrant population from that area.
And sometimes Esports pros don't get their paperwork in on time or just fuck up. Its possible to get your passport request denied by not submitting the correct photos here. So I assume its even worse on the other end.

They can try as early as they want, the end of the day its not guaranteed. Talk to anyone who is a foreign college student in the US and they will tell you the same thing. There is always the risk your visa will be denied for any number of reasons. There is no way to be 100% sure you will be let into the country.

ive only applied for a visa once in my life and it was an expensive pain in the ass and it was a super common visa

I've never applied for one, but my parents have. I don't know about a US visa, but I might have to apply for one soon-ish to visit relatives in the PRC. Note that because I'm Canadian national, I don't have to apply for a lot of visas.

Getting my passport renewed right now ahead of my trip to Europe on the 17th. Just took an oath declaring that all my info is legit. Dunno who I'm swearing to since I didn't have my hand on a bible tho
