well, wounding with intent to disable and without malicious intent falls under that so literally punching somebody who is for example mugging you qualifies under 18.2-51

I am pretty sure. I can't find the law that specifically says VA requires a grand jury for felony charges, but it appears that way. He is facing 1-5 years in convicted.

idk at least when i served on gj they supposedly (SUPPOSEDLY HAHA who the fuck KNOWS) brought cases to the GJ that had a good shot of getting a guilty verdict in court or at least they had a strong enough case so we just fucking gave a yes bill over and over easiest month of my life until i almost got into a fight with a bus driver on the jury who was twice my weight

The purpose of a grand jury is to prevent frivolous charges, yes. They are also secret, so we can't really know until it hits trial.

Even false charges ussually have a little bit of truth in them.
You don't get falsely charged with rape without having sex with someone very often. You don't get charged with with malicious wouding without an wouding. There is also the odd case of people faking injuries and stuff but thats far from the norm.
