The idea of a position 5 support made him so grumpy that he didn't make it past the second game. He loves LoL because "everyone is equally important."

I tried to explain that to him, that the supports were the play makers and shakers of Dota. But he wanted items all the time, even as support. He wouldn't even accept that Urn and Blink were the coolest items in dota.
I sort of knew it was going to be like that, since claimed to be a "natural mid player". He asked me to show him Dota and I did. Dude is cool for board games and RPGs, sort of shitty for online team games.

This was before all those changes. And even then he wouldn't have liked being a support and being under leveled compared to the cores. The idea that you make space for others to farm was to much for him.

I agree, which is why the whole thing bummed me out. Support is one of the more interesting roles in dota because there is always something to do and it’s so varied. You can be a lane support and zone someone out or be pulling/farming jungle. Ganking and applying pressure to other lanes. Or just be bounty hunter and doing some MGS shit behind enemy lines. Of course, knowing which of these is the right thing to do is the hard part.
I could not even begin to explain the idea of BH to him. The idea that there was a hero that could make kills worth more would have just made him quit earlier. Or a hero with a backstab ability not being a core hero.
Thinking about it, sort of glad he moved to do grad work.

Support in League of Legends (which is what I've played for a few years) was interesting for sure, but it never seemed like having gold was particularly worth it. All you did at one point was build items that helped you heal.
And then fight midgame (memory may be failing) a few years ago.
And now it looks like tank(?).
Support in LoL was basically there to ward/deward, and making plays could have been done by a lot of team members since it felt a lot like a lot of champions were designed for that.
My observation with respect to the value of the team members was that everyone being important meant that carrying a team of bad players was really, really hard.

carrying bad players is only slightly harder from the mid lane in pubs in lol than dota
its probably harder from every other position though
but support could carry adc and as long as adc is competent, adc could snowball a game... jungle can snowball mid lane or bot lane... top lane was probably the hardest to snowball off of but certain stupid heroes like riven or nid or irelia or jax could do it
idk league in general is snowballier than dota so if you're the best player in the game you'll start your snowball fastest / most reliably
