I hate using the bloated program that is Steam, so I’m very happy. And in the long term, this is better for everyone.

Is this just because of borderlands 3 being epic exclusive for a while?

Eh, shit to replace shit. Its all poop in the end, just different flavors. Capitalism sucks like this. Store fronts have always been able what they are selling and prices. The quality of the experience was always secondary.

Oh wow I missed that. Maybe I should refund my Handsome Pack on steam just to prevent 2K form earning any money on me?

Kidding aside, I don't need 90% of Steam features and I dislike it's bloatiness. But no cloud-save and no controller support (for games like rocket league) is already a dealbreaker. How can you come up with a digital distribution service in 2019 without cloud-saves? I get that they can patch it, but how can this be an afterthought at all? Makes me think about their other business decisions as well.

Epic has been pretty upfront that they are going to be putting cloud saves in as soon as they can. They have a development roadmap that is public, from my understanding. So its not like they don’t know what they need to fix.

I run non-steam games through steam, because it actually allows for use of a PS4 controller without other software/remapping.

And steam easily allows for it.

Such a shitty service, so capitalist /s

I’m glad that the bloated software that constantly updates and restarts for reasons has a feature you enjoy.

I think GOG's also done a good job of finding a library of games that it supports well though, and that's probably the thing Steam doesn't do nearly as well. Although it's probably reasonable to say that's fair - doesn't GOG own the games to some extent so they can make them playable on modern machines? I seem to think that's the case, even if it isn't. I mean they're selling WC1 and WC2, and D1 these days if anyone's curious enough to take a look. A lot of things I wouldn't be able to easily find online is around, like Tzar: Burden of the Crown or Darkstone lmao.

I also find Steam VN releases to be reasonably poor, despite having the cloud saves. But that's probably due to the adult content cuts/translations they end up using, some of which are shockingly unreadable. Or using a translation that was never praised for accuracy, like the case of If My Heart Had Wings' first/current(?) release. Like poor VNs aren't a big deal by any means, and certainly not Valve's fault, but a good VN launcher/store would go a long way, especially since the current ones are so primitive.

Strange, steam has never just up and restarted on me. sure, it occasionally tells me it has an update it wants to install, but you can just close the prompt.

I think this video is pretty good evidence that valve hasn't just been sitting back and doing nothing for the past few years.

from a memory perspective, steam is pretty bloat-free given how many features it has

"As soon as they can" should have been 6 months prior to public release in my opinion. The "we add it later"-solution is a business decision I won't accept as a customer.
Ofc I am going to boycott the shout out of this. But its simply bcause I am rarely interested in AAA games anyways, esp. not at release and I am sure the last AAA game I bought close to release was Witcher 3. So I have absolutely no problem sitting this one out and enjoying the dumpster fire. And from my perspective they deserve this stupid backlash because they made stupid decisions.

The only people I feel bad for are the devs who didn't know about this shit. These people deserve better.

Depends on the game. Some of the games they go out and get contracts to do that for, like your old classic games like Dungeon Keeper or whatever. That involves some level of programming (though generally not as much as you might think for most of the games). But they also have pretty much anything on there as long as it doesn't have DRM (Grim Dawn, for example, I bought through GoG). Divinity:Original Sin, pillars of eternity, witcher 3,
Their selection is much, much smaller than Steam's, but it's also generally curated better as well. They do have some Falcom rpgs too now that I look (Trails series, Tokyo Xanadu).

Steam having bad VNs is due to a lot of japanese studios not giving a shit about the west lol. I think Minori still won't let you play their games unless you're in a japanese time zone. Good translation is hard, time consuming, and expensive. My understanding is that most translators won't do more than 2k words in a day. Some of these VN are 500-600k characters (roughly words) or more. A lot of VNs aren't exactly high art either (since so many of the most popular ones are generic / schlocky harem storylines). Not giving a shit may also be inaccurate, it's hard for the smaller studios to judge foreign publishers, as there really aren't that many.

Some studios are also notoriously bad at translating. NISA, for instance, has never seemed to care about any non-Disgaea games, while XSeed was quite good (NISA is doing trails of cold steel 3, but they hired all of XSeed's people for it). JAST USA is a publisher that I've thought had some decent translations (though I've really only played a couple). The thing is no one is going to translate older titles or ones they don't think will sell. They especially aren't going to spend money re-translating. I've put in enough effort to struggle through most VNs on my own, but it's definitely not really something I can do to relax yet.

Yeah for sure, it's not a Steam-specific problem (or any store's problem), but on the other hand I definitely think there's space out there for a good VN/JRPG translation platform to exist and be successful financially, especially since the Japanese media anime/manga/RPG/VN giants are realizing they do have a following here.

I don't mind updates. But I don't keep my computer on all the time. So it is very annoying to have steam and other apps start up, act like they want to function and everything is fine, only to turn around and tell me about an install once I've started some game or something. It isn't a huge deal, but I prefer software to just down load an update and then tell me when it is ready. And I've messed around with steam and there doesn't seem to be a way to make it do the thing I want.

At the end of the day I'm a grumpy old man who misses the days when I had greater control over my PC and didn't have people so fucking invested in brands. I don't a specific dislike of steam more than I have a dislike of Epic. Its all shit of different flavors. But Steam is the biggest poop in town and I won't mind watching them scramble to deal with this new shit on the block. Maybe then they will get rid of the endless truckloads of anime boobie video games.

maybe i'm just a bear of very little brain, but it sounds like what you prefer is exactly what steam is already doing.......

if you're getting constant steam client updates, maybe you're opted into the steam client beta?
