I dont think a nerf on radius is necessary, its the signature of the hero and should not be changed. Something like nerfing pull distance by half could be totally reasonable though. It would make Dark Seer still extremely effective at close distance or low level but in big spread out teamfight his ability would be half as good.

What does it mean when people say "I play 1 or 3" or "I play 2"

I see this often in LFT or LFP threads on other dota forums.

its the chinese system to category position you play in a team: carry, solo, jungle, support, long lane solo

So if I were to get good at this game by playing a specific role, carry, for instance. I would say "I play 1"

I dont think those numbers are directly related to your lane, but rather the priority of farm.

Yes, strictly speaking the numbers relate to farm priority, and this can change within a match based on a number of factors,so people are using the numbers slightly incorrectly technically

Now it gets even more confusing.

1= Carry? Highest priority of farm?
2= Solo? Second highest priority?
3= Long lane solo?
4= Jungle
5= support

Would this be right if that was the case?

Also: If its game by game dependent, why would people use these in team recruitment threads. I'm even more confused now.

Yeah I think it's like this too.
1 would be the carry, and 5 would be a hard support like Veno.

edit: I don't think it's decided by the lane you are in or whether you jungle. It's probably more dependent on what kind of hero you play and how he/she scales in the late game to make the numbers 1-5.
No dough, no go. And no mercy.

I think it was Kup0ness who had a post explaining the farm priorities, and how it can be switched around sometimes, e.g. 4th position ES moving to 2 or something to farm blink dagger

mainly it's 1st - carry, 2nd - mid solo, 3rd - sole sidelane, 4th - jungler/soft(?) support, 5th - hard support/warder

Basically, people use it as
1. hard carry
2. mid solo
3. suicide laner
4. second support/jungle support
5. hard support

But it is kinda silly because that isn't the right use of the numbers if we are using what they actually mean, because not all games will have a solo mid, or suicide laner, or a hard carry, etcetc.

The numbers are just the pecking order for farm on your team, and people in recruitment threads and stuff don't quite use the term properly, but due to the very variable nature of setups in dota, it gives a decent indication of the kind of player you are, but not exact of course

The chinese system is positions 1 to 5, it means that the position playing 1 gets allocated the most resources(in gold and exp)
while 5th gets the least.

For example if a team consists out of

Anti-Mage
Windrunner
Queen of Pain
Tidehunter
Crystal Maiden

1st position is Anti-Mage, you want the most farm on him
2nd position is Queen of Pain, you want a lot of farm on her but not as much as the anti-mage(as she can deal lots of damage even without super items)
3nd position is Windrunner, you want some farm(meka, force staff, phase, hex later on)
4th position is Tidehunter, all he needs is to get off his ravage, Blink Dagger, arcanes/pipe etc are a luxury but highly reccomended, buys wards or counterwards if the 5th can not afford it.
5th position, Crystal Maiden, will get the least amount of resources allocated to her, she buys wards, counterwards and can basically live off Bracers and (red) boots) Luxury items are things such as force staff, Medallion or even drums.

It doesn't determine lanes, as it is possible that the 4th position goes Offlane or the 3th position goes offlane(say Furion can go jungle and play 3th position while Tidehunter takes the solo offlane as a 4th position)

no, just say you play carry... unless you are working on chinese forum and speak chinese than yeah, 1 work. Its a shitty system that not commonly used among the english speaking community, only people who were in a scene a a long time and has experience with the asian scene could understand it.

It started with the 1-1-3 metagame in China. Your #1 is the hard carry - Morphling, Phantom Lancer, Antimage. Your #2 is the solo mid - Storm Spirit, Shadow Fiend, Queen of Pain. Your #3 is the offlane solo - Dark Seer, Enigma, Windrunner. #4 is the aggressive support who eventually leaves the trilane after you get an advantage, moving to a roaming role. #5 is the dedicated babysitter, often in that metagame an Earthshaker or Crystal Maiden. Those were the general roles.

Farm priority within a game would change depending on the situation. I bring up Team BG against AEON.sg a lot, and in this case it's a good example. As AEON was struggling to defend the base, roy's Tidehunter was shifted into the #1 role, farming and pushing one lane even as BG seiged the base from the other two lanes. The reason for that decision was that, without Ravage, AEON couldn't take a fight and get back on the front foot. Often you'll see a hero that really needs a Blink take a higher-priority farming role within a game until it gets that item.. That kind of thing changes a bit with the metagame. Generally those in-game priority changes aren't represented with the numerical system.

So I'm on a mission to actually play real matchmaking games as I believe I'm ready. So far I'm 9-2 with my only losses being an awful game as Pudge and a really good game with Lycan where my team didn't play very well and I got caught alone at the end. Been having fun so far, ready to play in matched where a Drow/Bounty Hunter/Riki/Viper aren't always in.

Jesus, everyone at low skill plays those 4 heroes, what gives.

Invisibility (Shadowblade)/Invisibility/Invisibility and Viper is just an easy hero to win lanes and get kills with.

A lot of low level Dota 2 players also come from league. Ashe is pretty much based on Drow so they pick her. Or so people have told me when I asked them in game.

Also does gold from creeps decrease as the game goes on? I swear I was only getting like 24 gold around the 1 hour and 10 minutes mark..

Gold bounty doesn't change with time. Super/mega creeps have reduced bounty though.
