I think most modders expect a lot more.
From what I've heard from modders every map is basically an enormous hack job. That's not what modding should be like, and I don't think Valve believe that either.
They will change shit to make it easier for modders, I guarantee it.
Will they make it like I would want it? Or like the WC3 map editor? Maybe not, that's a different story.

Valve tends to take a long time getting stuff done but it's usually well thought-out in the end. I trust them to have a good idea of what and how to do it, because valve definitely isn't new to user-created maps and custom map support.

They will add it to Valve's Workshop, they will make it easy to find games, keep them updated, etc. I doubt actually creating maps will be as easy as WC3. The engine will still be more limited, and it will be harder to code for it. They will add a lot of stuff on the outside, but changes to the actual engine so it's easier to create WC3-like games is a different beast.

So what you're saying is that nothing in regards to the engine will ever be changed in regards to custom maps?
I'll hold you to that.

I'll hold you to that. I'm saying it won't be like WC3. Of course they can make small changes. You would need major changes for it to be as friendly to custom maps as some people expect.

It doesn't need to be like WC3 to have the same effect.
And I don't know how you know the code so intimately as to be able to judge if a map editor could be made and how many changes would need to be made from the engine side or how big of a job it would be simply from the editor side.
I'm not saying I know either, but I am quite certain they will make modding a lot more comfortable than it is right now. How far they take that is up to them, and if they want to monetize it.

If you are expecting Uther Party, Footman Frenzy, all kinds of TDs, etc. to quickly be ported to Dota 2 you will be dissapointed. It is possible that some WC3 maps will just be impossible to remake in the same quality. You may also not see the huge amoung of mauls, green TDs, etc. How easy it was to create custom games was a big factor on why they exploded in WC3. Some popular maps were quite poorly made and you can see it wasn't from someone with that much knowledge.
I expect Dota 2 maps to come from a far smaller community, with a lot more knowledge. Like most recent games.
My original comment literally started with "People that expect it to be like WC3 will be dissapointed", and now you say it doesn't have to be like WC3. Sure it doesn't, but that is besides the point.

It wouldn't be valve-like to monetize custom games at the inconvenience for the user. It would most likely be something like TF2 map stamps.

Well if you spend some serious time thinking about it I'm sure there are good ways to monetize custom games in good ways.
If they'd want to that is. They don't necessarily have to as custom maps will still bring more people into the game/steam and keep them for longer.

Well, map stamps is a good way to monetize it IMHO.

The Pudge wars Feels nothing like Pudge wars from Dota 1, Definately need to work on it more before we even think about having Valve help them out or give them a platform

Anyone played fatty fights, the SC2 custom game? Me and some uni mates really enjoyed that one, I never played Dota 1 Pudge wars though, how does it compare?
In any case, looking forward to custom games, there were so many amazing custom games in SC2, can't wait for most of them to get ported to Dota 2.

I liked WC3 maps way more than the SC2 maps, personally. It felt like they had more character.

Play medusa and it'll only take a few games (same time though, but can't have it all.)

They did, I think was the graphic effect, and how the Hero's were already in the game. Not to mention it just seems that Wc3 community had way better minds behind custom games (Zizz/Icefrog/NarutoX) Who made games that no one would have thought of.

arteezy still very good on fish lady after the nerfs

WC3 has like 1000 models and sc2 like 200

One of the best things about WC3 was all the clones and how people would take a map and try to improve it. Many of them weren't really that good, but it was fun spending a day trying out Pokemon Mauls, diferent TDs, arena games. Even Dota ALLSTARS started like that, as the name implies. Many times the best version of a map wasn't made by the original creator.
SC2 lost that, maps are protected, unpopular maps don't get visibility and even the editor isn't as friendly. On SC2 you only play the same maps over and over again.
