But that's so fucking bullshit. Especially for games, they copy each other extremely and evolve because of that. Imagine if id patented 3d shooters after releasing Doom.

It is bullshit, but just because they patented something so mindbogglingly obvious doesn't necessarily mean that they will be trying to sue people with it.

It doesn't matter if they're going to sue people. It's the notion and the precedent that it brings. Is this the first time a feature or a mechanic in a game was patented?

I dunno. Thats a very interesting question. Perhaps even a profitable one. ... brb.
I would seriously not be surprised if american patent law allowed someone to patent the concept of a "first person camera viewpoint in interactive media" and then go around suing developers of first person games.

Probably not even close.
I'd be very surprised if there weren't some patent infringement conflict between Konami, Andamiro, and Roxor games over dance game design in the past (Konami did go to court against Roxor, but the wording of their case seems to have referred mostly to unfair competition by retrofitting actual DDR cabinets rather than infringement on the design of the game, I don't know what the other details were anymore).

They cant fucking just file a patent something in April 2012 when Valve successfully implemented it since Oct 2011. Im expecting Valve and multiple other developers to file a dispute and make the patent public. >.>

i guess the patent only applies to mobas tho? cuz for example guildwars had a self moving spectator mode camera since somewhere in 2006
