The buyer can also suicide in the jungle to give his carry the rapier. I've seen it happen once, but rarely does anyone else but the carry have enough farm for a rapier and not have anything better to use it on anyways.

It stays locked to the original buyer until the first time an enemy hero picks it up. From that point on it becomes unlocked and undroppable, but before that it's muted if anyone on the original buyer's team picks it up.

Is that changed recently? I swear I once saw someone buy a rapier for someone else on the team..Maybe I'm hallucinating.

This has been around since Dota 1.

That doesn't actually give me any information whatsoever considering dota 1 is still around..
edit: This change was implemented in 6.66b, which I believe came in late 2009, early 2010.

6.66 - If a player other than the original owner of the Rapier picks it up, they cannot drop it
I assume it's the change

I think we need a "Why isn't this hero used in competitive play" thread, just for me
So, my question is, why isn't Ancient Apparition used?
I've been playing him a bit recently to complement my new Frozen Touch HUD (I love that HUD, it's so much better than that useless ugly Portal one), and realized a few things:
1. Game Breaking Ultimate 2. Extremely skill dependent 3. Very unreliable stun, but... 4. If paired with a reliable stunner, Cold Feet becomes a powerful follow up stun 5. Requires levels, yet is bad at really challenging powermids (may be wrong on this part. IIRC AA used to be a common mid years back in dota 1) 6. Cold Vortex has synergy with lots of skills 7. Low downtime hero, capable of roaming around and taking kills 8. Another annoyance is that he's one of those heroes that will take hero last hits, but doesn't really benefit from the tons of gold that much, kinda similar to Axe in that respect.

I don't think AA takes many hero last hits, apart from when he's sniping low health heroes across the map.

Don't enemies under the Ice Blast debuff just "shatter" when they cross the threshold hp? I was under the impression that the kills would be given to AA.

Only if the dot is the reason they die. Whoever deals the damage that gets the enemy under the threshold gets the kill.

Only if the damage from AA is what brings them under the threshold, which rarely happens in teamfights

They're given to the source of damage that put them below the threshold. AA will get it if the Ice Blast DOT is what does it.
[EDIT] Double-sniped.

I see I see, thanks for answering this part. So back to my original question: what's the main problem with him that makes him never-used in competitive?
|
Excessively weak without a setup stun, Unreliable spells. Basically too weak in lane and early to be an effective support without a strong setup stun (whereupon there isn't any upside to having AA over half the hero pool). Also no good farming ability and too poorly scaling to be a core.
His utter lack of reasonable slow/stun/silence etc is kinda the key assuming enemies aren't braindead. Maybe with an atos or something...
AA is kinda wisp-tier useless without a buddy, but he isn't wisp-tier OP when he gets a buddy lol. No global TP, no OP healz, no free MS/IAS/Damage Reduction. All he has is a VERY UNRELIABLE heal-prevention ability.

He has been used very extensively up till last year in Dota 1 by the Chinese for at least two to three years. He can be played as a support in a tri-lane, a farming core in a tri-lane, and solo mid. He's best accompanied by people with really good disables; people used to fear es + aa pretty much. Another really common setup would be dual lane mid with ck + aa that pretty much rival kunkka + sd; anything that goes 1v2 against that is almost dead for sure.
I can't really come up with any reason as to why he's faded, other than the fact that other supports such as wisp + naga + visage are a lot more popular now.

anyone knows why the fuck solo is allowed to play starladder first he recieved a lifetime ban from starladder, then they shortened it to 1 year, now hes not even banned for a fucking year not even for 1 fucking season
people fucking lose their minds over take5 being rightfully DQ'd from MLG but apparently noone gives a fuck a proven matchfixer is magically unbanned and competly free to play again

It is a good hero with good skills, just need to be re-discovered some day. Pro players are sometimes too tunnel visioned in terms of trying different heroes. He is a very good trilaner(even thou level dependent) with a broken third skill, slow and an unreliable stun also can be used to ward off the offlaner.
He was used from time to time but not that popular. He is fairly item independent and have a good team fight presence, but can do nothing against split pushing(ulti is kind of gimmicky) and map control(rat dota basically) meta, which is currently pretty popular. He negates all kind off 'early pushing with healing' kind of strategies(chen and/or fast mek) so still can be usable on many cases.

The primary reason AA isn't used in competitive play is that he's far more awkward to lane in 3-1-1 than he is in 2-1-2.
He can't off-lane. He can't beat the stronger mids in the current pool. He requires specific drafts to be a successful trilaner, and when drafted improperly can end up being very useless because if the hero gets behind, its very hard to catch up on levels because of how poor his farming ability is for a support.
He was a top banned/picked hero in 6.72/6.73 when Chinese teams were playing primarily 2-1-2 laning, because he fits a multitude of roles in that arrangement (DK became known in that version for picking the dreaded ES+AA duo off-lane). It's just that in 3-1-1 he's far more limited in where you can put him, which makes him really awkward to fit into a draft.

The subsequent (and deserved) nerfs hit his laning ability significantly.

i can see AA working on a offensive 3 lane, the problem ? there are far better choices for that, he is a great 2-1-2 Hero to be fair (even thought the lack of stun/silence really hurts him) but still there are better choices out there, now more that Cold Feet mana cost its so damn high a single Cold Feet at level 1 cost him half his mana
