It's pretty commonplace among the highest levels of play to keep tabs down to how many magic stick charges someone has (if you've watched YaphetS or 2009 play, they are making note of this all the time). That level of precision is useful. Virtually any item that someone could send to themselves has greater impact than a single magic stick charge. Which means that just data mining the number of times someone checks other player's inventories is not a useful metric to gauge a player's skill for the mmr system. If I check every enemy on the map every minute, I get x mmr. Now do I get more mmr if I check everyone every 45 seconds? Do I get more if I check them every 15 seconds, am i then 4 times as much mmr as the 1 minute guy? What about checking every 5 seconds? Should the mmr system award someone more points for a game if he looked at other heroes more than his own hero? You're forgetting the original context, which was smurf detection. As a precise MMR function, no it's not useful. As a broad indicator that can be used to assist smurf detection? Yes, this is useful. You can make some general judgements pretty easily. For example in starcraft you could say that if after one game a player had >150 apm, mined x ammount of minerals per minute and never built up a bank of 500 for over 30 seconds he is probably at least decent. I am sure you could find similar metrics in dota to get a rough determination of player skill that works even if he trolls and/or his team lose horribly. Most of the statistics would just be clouded by variables that aren't even under the players control. If a player gets 800 GPM does that make him a good player? What if he was playing anti-mage and his team won the game 4 vs 5 while he just farmed all game? It certainly doesn't make him a bad player, but farming while you're under no pressure isn't impressive. At the same time you could have a player who gets five man gank trained the entire game while his spectre free farms. Does that make the player that got gank trained terrible since he died a lot and his team still wins the game because of spectre? Is the spectre good or bad because the other team ganked the wrong person? Too many variables are out of your control to have any sort of metric if a player is good. Your KDA and GPM don't provide any meaningful data alone. I don't think most of these things would be basic visible statistics. However, there are a lot of things not visible to you in any form that Valve could data mine from replays that in many cases are highly indicative of a good player. The best example that comes to me immediately is how often someone clicks on his opponents to view their items. It was about smurf detection if we assume that we're talking about "judging the skill of a player after a single game" for the entire time and that judging a player after 1 game means smurfing. Otherwise it just seems that the topic shifted slightly to "checking someone's inventory is a sensible metric for an mmr system" But I think we could drop that topic now either way.

Well no, you're looking at my post on its own, when my post was made in the context of several prior posts which started with the discussion of smurf detection.

My rule of thumb is if you are 2 branches, aren't building a mek, make a wand. Buy the stick first usually (once you clear a regen spot)

In what manner do you usually end up recievin the magic wand? Do you use the courier for it? I feel like by the time I want the magic stick my inventory is already full ir by the time I go back to base I'm onto midgame items already.
Also when do you sell your hp regen if unused during the lane? Mainly tangoes.

Apparently not since he is going to be on the show..

I usually upgrade to a wand only if I need the stats.

imo non-carries should always get a stick after boots in a 2/v3v1, and before if in a 2/3v2/3 lane. supports (or everyone really) usually get branches, so upgrading it to wand after it always worth it
most mids will start with branches, generally their early item progression is something like bottle -> boots -> stick+wand recipe+TP
|
stick can be good before boots too :p supports may only have 0-1 branches though if they pooled and stuff

Don't know if it has been discussed before, but does anyone know how can you create a camera point in dota? (eg: like in sc, just click on one button and voilà)
|
wand is most of the time not worth the gold, the only reason i buy wand is +3 stats

If I don't already have the GG branches, I buy a wand only if I'm support and the +3 stats is actually something that I desperately need. Other than that, Magic Stick is sufficient.

The only times I can think of where I'd start without those branches are random gold, repick gold, or supports. Otherwise I'm starting with 3 branches in the overwhelming majority of cases.

Also when do you sell your hp regen if unused during the lane? Mainly tangoes. Being onto midgame items does not invalidate buying wand. Even if you had to sell a branch to make space as you went, going from Stick->Wand is more cost-effective than pretty much anything that costs more than a Circlet.
Consider the point where you go back with Stick + 2 branches. You have no slots left, so you need to either ditch your branches or upgrade to wand.
Wand upgrade is paying 203 gold for 5 more stick charges and +3 all stats. Selling branches is giving you 52 gold, but losing the +2 all stats.
So basically you're paying effectively 255 gold to keep +3 all stats and gain the 5 extra stick charges. Unless you have an immediate major item you can complete, that is a solid investment.

Am I the only one here who doesn't like getting Blink on TA? I feel like boosting damage or survivability would do better for the gold cost on TA and some other heroes too.
Actually I don't like getting Blink period... Unless it's absolutely a killer combo like Magnus, Puck, Batrider, etc...

Hey guys. I picked up the game with my friend the other day, and he absolutely loves playing Alchemist. Who are some of the best supports for Alchemist? I am thinking maybe Lion or Rhasta
