Oh, he totally would, Na'Vi pick weird shit in important games all the time. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. He picked Nyx when it was a bad hero at TI2, and that was one of the most important games in their lives.

both sky adn tide worked really well. shut down s4 completely. that they didnt have an answer for the farm that loda got is a different issue.

People just always want to say Na'Vi aren't serious when they lose for some reason. Can't possibly be that they've prepared a few strats in scrims for the single biggest event of the year and they tried to implement them vs their biggest tournament rival...noooo they've gotta just be messing around.

It's just the state of dota, or DK team as a whole. You don't get paid as much as a pro sc2 player. DK is a small team, it has 1 dota team and 1 sc2 player Lyn, and I doubt every single player in DK dota team is paid more than Lyn.

Western players kept saying, that in China you can live from your salary, that's why they are so much ahead and you are reyling on tournament wins to make a living out of it. I'm not sure, but judging by what I've read just now this couldn't possibly be further away from the truth.
Or am I messing things up right now?

In a recent interview with ZSMJ he said he gets paid about ~5000RMB monthly + place to stay&food(iirc).
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but that doesn't sound that bad for a progamer in China(though i guess it could depend a lot on location..no idea where ZSMJ is at)
He might be an exception though as he's quite known, but so is Burning so I don't know. Note that ZSMJ did say he's quite poor, he did so in a joking manner though.

5000 RMB is not really that much, even if your living expenses are covered.
Especially when compared to how several ex-progamers are making a comfortable living making videos/running a Taobao store like Burning said.

Looking back, it seems like only the tip-top pros have been able to make a decent living off of it. Even in the heydays of SC and Quake 3, only a handful of guys were making good money. In Quake it was Fatality and Voo, maybe Cooler at some point. In SC it was the usual suspects. In CS I'm not even sure the tip top teams were making decent money on an individual level. Fighting games... forget about it. They do it solely for the love of the game lol.
I think Valve is really trying to change that with DotA 2. The distribution is too top-heavy at TI3 imho, but still there are so many tourneys going on with $5k and $10k purses that hopefully the top 16 teams can actually make a living. It's probably not there yet, but I think soon it will be if things keep going this direction. I think players will always have to run a "side business" though. Streams, hardware sponsors, lessons, etc... Athletes generally have to. It's tough to make a living in any sport.

You can't put this on Valve alone. The way every tournaments run right now are all top-heavy, not just TI. Dota scene is exciting, but also a mess.

Yeah, basically you have LCS teams and Challenger teams like WCS. LCS teams got paid by Riot but are not allowed to play in other tournaments besides LCS, other Challenger teams run like normal amateur dota-like teams, where you play tournaments after tournaments to try to make the living. There're qualifiers to promote and demote LCS and Challenger teams. Most of the Challenger teams try to make into LCS because that's where the stable money is, on the other hand, there're good amateur teams that also kind of win a lot of tournaments and make their living too.

Valve is talking about ways for players to monetize more similarly to the way people sell items. Not just giving people money.
