In the US, some domestic flights are purposely overbooked to account for no-shows, aka maximizing the chance that the plane is leaving with someone in every single seat. Now obviously that can lead to issues if everyone who bought a ticket does show up or if there are unexpected people from previous flights needing to be on the plane. Not sure if international flights and/or European carriers do the same practice. | ||

You intentional overbook to account for no shows, when for what ever reason there are less no shows than expected, the plane is overbooked, so the people get moved to next plane. Now the odds are high that this plane is also overbooked, since you now also have the leftovers from the previous plane. It is pretty much a domino effect, that goes on until a plane is not overbooked | ||
