esport is financed by advertising the same way conventional sport is, but other than conventional sport in esport players have much more possibilites to market themself without being attached to the team. in the worst case this can lead to a situation where a certain popular player is a very bad influence for the team, but because he has a big fanbase the team cant replace him because they would lose a lot of exposure if they did. this blocks ressources for better up and coming players and might broaden the gap between top teams (resulting in less top teams in the end) best example of this is the SK.lol team. with ocelot. they have the most popular streamer and despite his lack of personal skill or ability to form great teams he is kept as a core SK member for years. about 2 years ago, 2 players have left SK and immediatly became a top 2 team in the world with 2 ex-SK guys, a known free agent and two unknown players. | ||

Honestly i dont quite get the huge audience watching LoL streams either, to me only Chuan is the must watch for me, puppey/funnik/notail/sing/demon will tune in sometimes and thats about it. Maybe that has something to do with the age group that plays the game? I guess younger people *cough* can spend more time on watching (LoL) streams? edit: how can i forget notail | ||
