But writing off dota2 and saying "Welp that's it" is to me, far too pessimistic. I'll personally wait and see, i had hoped it'd be a deal with OGN, but well, what can you do.

They basically said that they want to open up the game to everyone but they also dont want their servers to melt, so they are gonna release the game in batches and scale up their servers as they need to. It looks like they're just selling "early access" to the game for 9.99$. They're pulling a S2. http://store.steampowered.com/app/570/

if so then I can see how thats kind of lame because your kind of screwing the people who paid $30 a day ago. but w/e it makes sense they would lower the price close to release.

Maybe they lowered the price because people are less likely to pay so close to release. They still are saying they are opening it up immediatly after removing the invites as well though, it will just have limited slots for each batch. How big of a deal that is depends on how big each batch will be. Yes, it still has items, but they are probally not the same ones. There's also a "deluxe" edition with more items that costs more.

They split it into 2 packages and added a few items. The original starter pack didn't come with a ward skin (they weren't in the game yet).

I just find it weird for them to do this when invites are being sold on their marketplace for 2 cents or being given away by bots. I fail to see how this is even the "start" of a launch. Like, it's supposed to be a free to play game - let's test that by having people buy it. Like.... why make a big announcement when essentially they've changed nothing fundamental except lowering the price of early access for the f2p game. If the game goes full F2P in like a month people are probably going to feel ripped off.
