I mean, maybe as spirit breaker if you somehow convince him to manfight you AWAY from creeps, you win that fight (17% chance to bash vs 17% chance to spin. RNG battles!). Otherwise though you basically have to pull the creep wave away from him and just trade farm if you can.

this sounds like what I should have done, pull the creeps away. What happened was that my lane partner stunned him, I went in since I thought "sweet kill potential", stunned as well, his partner hit me with a spell and I realized (not fast enough) that I can't manfight Axe. From that kill he got tranq boots and the lane got really, really painful from that point, he zoned me out so hard.

good to know I was fighting an uphill battle from the getgo I guess.

Something like a tree may be able to do fine, DS as mentioned should do fine, maybe a clock, maybe Undying with Decay spam. The question was if there was any melee for whom the lane wasn't fucking impossible, and there's definatelly heroes that should be ok laning against him, but if we are trying to find heroes that have an advantage against Axe it gets much more complicated. DS is probally the best one I guess. It depends a lot if we are talking mid or a lane as well.

The king of low level manfights is still Ursa imo. Not sure how well he would handle the lane though.

If you are talking about a melee in a 2v2 lane it really changes a lot as well, it depends a lot more on both your partners.

If you have the ability to deal damage from far away despite being melee, you'll do fine, if you can do it without bottle crow or soul ring you'll win. if you have -armor spells you'll do pretty well, like naga siren can make him not want to fight in creeps.

thinking about it.. i think sven might be the worst melee vs axe laning possible.

that range display getting taken out is a really good change imo. keeps offlaners guessing and keeps down ld bear micros, max range blinks, among many things.

How are those good things? It's not like there's any skill trying to guess what's a max range blink and what'll get you penalized.
None of this is skill, it's not fun, dota shouldn't be about guessing what your abilities do, it should be knowing it exactly, and making the correct decision. That's the fun part imo. Why did valve add a flashing red orb to puck? Let's have them guessing too!

They didn't add a flashing red orb. DotA 1 illusory orb changes color when its almost max range too.

Perhaps I didn't word it right. There wasn't a flashing orb in dota1 for the longest time -- that was my point. It was added relatively recently, for the express purpose of giving the player better information about how their abilities work. This is especially relevant because orb, like blink, punishes the player. It used to do this with no cue at all.

e: imo, cues are good. It forces the player to pay attention and really learn the ins and outs of their abilities. OD's prison has a visual cue to help teammates. SD's disrupt has an audio cue so that you can time your torrents and LSA's so that antimage/qop will never blink out of chain. etc.

All the 1200 range thing did (for me) was act as a cue for effective blinks and xp leech (especially now with the deny range being increased). I like cues. I hope it comes back, in one way or another

Except it also gave you an innate unfair advantage against someone who didn't have it. You knew exactly how far out to sit for xp or to skip xp while others had to guess. These are things that honestly you should learn and just kinda guess. You know roughly the range of say a 600 range hero then yous hould be able to double that in your head. Shouldn't rely on a circle to show you where you can go.

The thing is that everyone had it. Maybe not everyone was aware.. that's different. Valve could put it into options. Not everybody knows SD says "sa nith ika gluth" when he casts disruption either. Am I having an innate advantage by knowing that if I cast split earth at the same time as 'ika' that it'll autostun everybody? Others have to guess the duration, after all.

On a side note I played a pudge game today and realized how much I miss this for placing hooks. I kept hovering my mouse over the skill, which worked pretty well. I could get used to that. Maybe valve should add something like that for dagger and xp.

You're comparing the wrong things. Range indicator is similar to meepo and invoker macros.
Sure everyone has access to them, doesn't make them good for the game though. It was removed with good reason.

How do you equate a range cue to a macro that clicks buttons for you?
I agree meepo/invoker/armlet macros are bad for the game. I'd argue they even break it. One-button invis, and toggling armlet through every dot in the game is a wee bit silly. That's why I don't use them, despite them giving you a huge advantage (especially armlet).

However, just because macros and range cues are both done through console, does not make then even remotely similar in nature.

Being able to precisely judge XP range to a level of accuracy not possible through just eyeballing it is arguably more gamebreaking than the armlet toggle macro.

Both allow you to perform a gameplay task to a level of precision that is not possible through normal human gameplay, but the armlet case comes up way less often than XP range does.

so, just wondering - is laning against Axe as a melee hero fucking impossible? excluding any kind of help from supports for both sides. One on one, melee, is it possible to beat Axe? I was Sven if it matters. I lost the lane - not terribly but I had terrible farm for a hard carry.

To add to this the obvious champ is dark seer but something like a dragon knight can work really well or a pa because when u hit 6 u can start trading blows and u can stiffling dagger out of the dot.

Why shouldn't it be possible to do that? What would it break? One of the other dotas (hon, I think) added a little dot above creeps for when they were inside your xp range.

it lets you scrape away with the bare minimum with 0 game knowledge and still gain xp from a range that wouldn't be possible without. when you manage to get a fast 6 in an 1v3 or 1v2 scenerio its a serious display of skill in dota, with range finder its significantly easier and removes a lot of that whole thing. Something similar would be like in starcraft if you highlighted an enemy army, and it told you how many game seconds it was away from your base. letting you get in exactly as many things as you can before the attack arrives, when it takes away that whole feel of the game as a skill.

Makes it too easy for offlaners and/or anyone else having a hard time in lane to just sit at the edge of xp range and be safe. Instead of maybe do a mistake, come too close and get killed off. Being able to see exact XP range can only stale the gameplay.

What would being able to cleanly toggle armlet break?

It's the exact same thing. You are performing a basic gameplay action to a level of precision that is not possible through normal human ability. What a human is capable of will vary based on the player's ability, sure, but being able to judge XP range precisely 100% of the time is something a human is simply not capable of, and the gameplay is not balanced around a human being able to do that, just the same as it's not balanced around armlet toggle being perfect every time.

Okay.. I don't think it matters as much as you guys say it does. Usually you'd hug the 1000 range line because that was the xp range for denied creeps. Now if you are trying to estimate 1200, but come too close, say to 1000 .. it doesn't matter. That's how close you used to be anyway.

@yango: imo, armlet macro breaks every dot. You can't die to any dot if you have an armlet, period. Rot, ion shell, you name it.

All I'd like is just more info given to the player about core mechanics of the game, that's all. I think the XP range increase made offlaning much easier than range removal made it harder. That's not even part of my argument at all. I just want more info on the most fundamental mechanics. I guess I'll stop beating the dead horse now lol

When you hit level 6 is far too late to deal with Axe. Especially if Axe intercepts your creepwave.
PA needs level 3 to lasthit reliably with 100 damage stifling dagger.

There are a few melee heroes that could beat/gain an advantage on Axe in a 1v1: Juggernaut, Timbersaw, Bristleback, maybe even Slark, Undying, Naix.
It's much more doable going 2v2 against an Axe lane, though. Double melee lanes and laning Axe are both not that common, so chances are you won't be in many double melee lanes against Axe.
If nobody hates you, you´re doing something wrong. However someone hating you doesn´t make you right

Except a human is capable of armlet toggling against DoTs reasonably up to the point where 2 DoTs + normal incoming damage or 3 DoTs are there.

Armlet toggle still gets you killed by AA ult no?

Also I don't think it's coincidence that the range for denied xp on creeps is 1200 now, concurrently done with removal of range indicator.

I'd love to see someone manually toggle against ion shell
