IRC chatter should remain in IRC - http://webchat.quakenet.org/?channels=tl.dota2

Posts that relate to topics with their own thread, such as in News, Tournaments or Strategy should go in those threads.

True. There are few names that stick out when you mention Valve. When you say Riot or Blizzard Entertainment. There are always a few heads you can click on as the community liaison or the figurehead that "presents" the company.

In this regard, Valve very rarely has any heads bumping out of their circle. Gabe and in TF2 it was Robin Walker.

I think when the game is released and they have a platform of all the features they wanted to include in Dota, they'll be a bit more bolder with their approach. Though, I like to assume they're taking a hands-off approach with tournaments and directly organizing events and more hands-on with sustaining teams financially (think pennants, etc.) and organizing forms of better presenting them

IIRC, v1lat said that valve helped them get the Ukrainian government to help with Starladder funding a while back. Don't think it actually ever happened though.

I don't want to be pessimistic but Valve hasn't even mentioned anything about TI3 have they ? Last year we already knew that it was going to be held at Seattle by that point but this year we don't have anything. Each time people mentioned TI3 I couldn't get this disturbing idea at the back of my mind that it might not happen.

I think the only "announcement" they made about TI3 is that they wanted The International to be an annual event but there is nothing yet specific to TI3. Not even a small mention somewhere. Nada. I'm growing fearful. Hope I'm wrong.

The first announcements we got of TI2 were when Na'Vi and DK got their official invites as the first two participants (TL thread when it happened). That was at the beginning of May last year, so I don't expect anything until then.

No. At least there's no signs of it. Remember when Greykarn was on talkDOTA? He even stated that finding a sponsor for DotA2 (Corsair are the ones sponsoring DotA in Dreamhack) was extremely hard for Dreamhack.

thats the state of the industry though. LoL tournaments lost sponsors too around the same time. riot had to foot a larger bill.

I was joking but if you guys followed the 1.6 "scene" back in the good old days, Valve never supported the game. And they never even got a tournament like DotA has (The International).
Don't get me wrong tho, I support Valve and I think they are really cleaver but they can fuck things up sometimes like they did to 1.6. It's probably just my fanboy side speaking but I would like them to support the scene a little bit better especially when it comes to things like this. I don't ask them to throw money at MLG or IEM to host DotA like Riot does but help them to find better sponsors and whatnot. Valve always seems to not care about it. Probably I'm wrong but they still have to prove me wrong.

They didn't support 1.6 but that wasnt really how things were done back then (see Broodwar, Dota1 and Blizzard). Things have moved along a lot with free to play models and streaming. Valve did more so though with TF2 creating spectator HUDs and having competative mode with no random spread and crits etc, provided the fan made matchmaking lobby with servers but sadly it never really got into LAN tournaments because as we all know now it takes backing to get the tournament organisations to pick games up now.

I would like them to do more stuff, maybe put TF2, CS:GO and Dota2 into a big LAN but it looks to me like they are wary of being caught in a price war with Activision and Tencent.

Yeah no marketing. They do hire non-software people from time to time. One requirement though is that everybody who wants to work there must be "comfortable with code."

That's the thing, tho. If 90% of the scene is funded by the developer, is it really an esport, or is it just glorified marketing at that point? I don't think I want the scene to be all so reliant on Valve, I think it kind of kills competition between the players, teams and other event organizers.

Agree with this. It'd be like the WNBA. No profit on a lifeline marketed to a small amount of people.

If they're gonna sponsor events, it should be when it actually benefits them. The money invested into tournaments wouldn't be returned at this point imo.

Well I think the approach is fine as long as you build a structure that can continue after you pull the money out. Kind of give it a headstart then slowly start pulling out while replacing your own investment with some kind of self-sustaining business model

Valve have seen how much something like the marketplace can profit content creators in a game and want eSports to be similar. I believe the monetization of tickets is just the beginning, and as Valve have stated, pennants were really just a test done in a bit of a rush before TI2.

And tournaments haven't really explored tickets a lot either. TD was the first with bundled items. TPL is probably the first ones that come along and did a little advertisement video for their courier with the ticket and they have it up on their stream all the time and play ads for it on the stream. And TPL is a significantly smaller tournament than TD in terms of viewership, but yet TPL has sold at least 8200 tickets, and TD have sold at least 9500.

But there's still a lot more that you can do to sell tickets. Better advertising is the obvious thing, but you could even have an alternative audio stream in game which is just a couple of random pro players that talk about the game. Or bundle pennants for the teams in the tournament. Or promise like 10% of ticket sales go to prize pool. Or do give-aways to ticket holders as you would subscribers. These are all things that would increase sales of tickets. I wouldn't be surprised if a major (western) league that really pushed it could sell 15-20,000 tickets currently. And this will scale along with Dota viewership, which Sponsorship doesn't necessarily.

I personally think that people paying directly in one way or another is the easiest route to grow Dota. Because ad-revenue isn't good enough and major sponsorships are hard to find and somewhat unreliable.

These forums are always full of doomsday sayers. As another person said we didn't hear anything about TI2 until may. We're not even in April yet and people are going to go ahead and assume it's not going to happen because we haven't heard anything yet? Might as well assume it's not going to rain everyday because you don't see any clouds at 5am.
