Don't get me wrong tho, I support Valve and I think they are really cleaver but they can fuck things up sometimes like they did to 1.6. It's probably just my fanboy side speaking but I would like them to support the scene a little bit better especially when it comes to things like this. I don't ask them to throw money at MLG or IEM to host DotA like Riot does but help them to find better sponsors and whatnot. Valve always seems to not care about it. Probably I'm wrong but they still have to prove me wrong.

It feels like Valve wants a scene to grow and gives tools and makes things like pennants, ingame logos and banners so that the scene will be self sustaining instead of artificially creating a scene. The 2nd could give great growth at first but what would happen to it if they stopped? I think Valve is thinking longterm and they usually know what they're doing

Even if Valve provides the means for tournaments to do things themselves (in-game ticket, etc.), there's more risk for them because they have to invest more into making the tournament run.

This is especially true because Riot doesn't just provide prize pool or monetary aspects to running the tournament. Judges (in the case of rule infractions--note that it's always Riot directly deliberating over these things when they happen and not the TOs), casting (casters at MLGs and IEMs are always the same Riot-provided casters), and other manpower are all provided by Riot. There's a lot less overhead for MLG/etc. to run a LoL tournament because Riot's doing all of that stuff for them. There is no reason Valve couldn't be able to do the same. But, to me they are throwing their money into one tournament a year that has a big draw for a couple of days and maybe another weekend or two for the 1-2 qualifiers. I mean we don't even know much about the next one. The rest of the year it's like okay, go make your own tournaments and make us more items! Basically, it seems to me both companies are throwing money around. One is doing it well, the other not so much.

If you consider the salaries of people at Riot who don't actually contribute at all to the production of the game and are only doing "E-sports" (and there are quite a lot of them), I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Riot is spending an order of magnitude more money on this than Valve is.

This is Valve we are talking about, not some random no-name company like Riot who without Tencent's money would be nothing. Either way, let the game be released and then we can talk about it again. Hopefully I'm wrong but I even feel that The International 3 will be the last International.

And because of that I don't forsee them actually putting resources into it that quite honestly aren't needed. While most of us consider the game to be released there hasn't been any advertising and it's not actually released. There's already a huge saturation in the market for these style of games when it comes to tournaments between Dota2/LoL. Dota2 holding it's own with valve only dumping money into one tournament is a great sign. LoL's success is only due to riot pouring in their own money. Much as I hate LoL it's working for them so I can't argue against it. But they only have one game, Valve has tons and honestly doesn't need to do this.

Last year we already knew that it was going to be held at Seattle by that point but this year we don't have anything. Each time people mentioned TI3 I couldn't get this disturbing idea at the back of my mind that it might not happen. I think the only "announcement" they made about TI3 is that they wanted The International to be an annual event but there is nothing yet specific to TI3. Not even a small mention somewhere. Nada. I'm growing fearful. Hope I'm wrong.

I also don't believe Valve has a marketing department but they definitely know how that works. Portal 2 had proper marketing. Even had TV spots and shit.

Its not part of their corporate identity. Well, they do hire people who are economist or psychologists e.g, but they do require some software knowledge. No need for degrees, it seems though. http://www.valvesoftware.com/jobs/index.html
