IRC chatter should remain in IRC - http://webchat.quakenet.org/?channels=tl.dota2

Posts that relate to topics with their own thread, such as in News, Tournaments or Strategy should go in those threads.

From April 11th: EricTams advised that changes have been made to the matchmaking algorithms to utilize the number of games played amongst other things. Please base your views on matchmaking after this point.

it seems number of matches actually does matter

From what I've observed there's a cutoff between new and veteran players at around 40 games played but it's possible there's a continuous scale without defined cutoffs (or that the algorithm has changed over the months).

For the record, Valve implemented the number of games played as a factor in matchmaking due to popular demand early in the beta. The popular demand came from veteran players disliking having new players with very few games played in their games. Personally I think the negative of grouping smurfs together with new players (or at least, more so than would be expected otherwise) is outweighed by the fact that new players get to play together when there aren't smurfs around.

yeah but why would that be a good idea
wouldn't it be better to have mm based only on "skill" so that you don't have smurfs terrorizing low win games for a long time

It isn't a "long time", it's 10 games at most. If you win 10 consecutive games you can go straight in page 1. It's only a factor, not the only one.

idk man
i've won 10 consecutive games on a smurf and i'm pretty sure i wasn't on page 1
i also have a smurf with like 80% winrate after 20 games, and it's still being matched with people <100 wins
i chose the "experienced" option at the beginning too

It is intended for people who are new to the game, not for smurf. New people, no matter if they have experience with dota1 or not, should not be placed together with people who are already get used to the game. Even if you are a good dota1 player, when you just start playing dota2, you still don't get used to the graphic, UI yet, so you are in a way, is a noob, but a better noob. If you are smurf, then it's your own-doing, the system don't care about it. It's fair imo.

It does not take 50 games to get used to the UI. More like 5-10 tops...

It takes more than 5,10 games to know all the heroes' spells effects....

I dunno about that. If you're a dota 1 player then I can't think of a single spell which isn't immediately obvious to you.

I just have a question, is Silencer in his current form considered good enough for competitive dota, or maybe even OP? I ask because he still hasn't been activated in CM mode, and from the few games I've played against a hard support style of this hero, he's very annoying and quite powerful.

Decent, not OP.

The lopsidedness of his kit toward teamfighting favors his usefulness in pubs, but competitive play would probably highlight his weaknesses (slow farming, no pushing or counterpushing, vulnerable to ganks) much more than pubs do.

Radiance took me a few seconds to realise that I am burning :S
The effect is not as pronounced in D2 compared to the glittery in WC.

I think mainly is getting used to the QWER setup when switching over from legacy.. I had a few deaths for no reason other than instinctively pressing the legacy hotkey (NW timelapse zzzzzzzzzz).

The new shop also takes a while to sink in because of the layout (did not realise there was a grid format at first) so it was difficult to find items especially since ICONS ARE VERY DIFFERENT so needed some time to adjust for that too.

The graphics also took some time to adjust to.. Is it me or is the screen a bit more zoomed in than WC???

Not quite true. When I first played dota2, I didn't even recognize tiny and his avalanche animation, and I couldn't recognize heroes when they have ion shell on them. You'll know what almost every spell are after seeing them maybe 2-3 times, but you definitely won't be able to react to them the first time.

Yeah I don't see why people keep saying this with such confidence. Hell I just checked my last match I played without a stack (well, with one buddy) and the other team had a 80wins guy who solo q'd into the game. For reference my wins are somewhere north of 300.
edit: if I check games played with a stack, the win disparity gets much worse. Although, they may be queuing together, I'm just too lazy to check their friends' matches. It's probably cleaner to look at games where there aren't 4+ man stacks anyway.

Yeah it does matter but not to determine skill (aka who you get matched with/against). All Eric Tams said is that the more games someone played, the more certain they are of their ranking of that player. This makes perfect sense. Judging skill by games played does not.

Fixed this. Some of the LoL guys keep tagging things Dota not remembering how it actually effects preferences.
