Very High does tend to associate with better MMR only with regards to the fact that higher MMR players will usually on average have a game that has the characteristics required for a Very High classification.

Like there've been games where all the players are definitely Very High but because someone afked, griefed or left it dropped down to High or Normal because the quality of the game was lowered.

Just from personal experience I am pretty sure you have just misinterpreted that post. I went on a terrible losing streak over time saw my games in the replay filter go from exclusively very high, to a mix of high/very high, to exclusively high, to a mix of normal/high. Afterwards I managed to go on a winning streak and under the replay filter my games crawled through normal/high, back to high/very high and finally back to only very high. Now I am on another losing streak and my games have dropped back either into high/very high.

I don't see how that says that it looks at how good the game was instead of the general skill level though. If that was the case, you would see people in Very High having games on Normal or High, but if you are not near the border, it's almost always the same bracket. And you do have games with very low stats sometimes, for whatever reason. You would also not see the continuos path into Very High you see when you create a smurf.

I think what he means in the FAQ is that the brackets are not part of the MMR equation, they something done afterwards, but it can still be related to the MMR of the group of players.

He even says "I do not know how it is calculated but it is MEANT to show games according to the filters you chose.", when asked how a game is assigned a skill level. So it's definatelly not proof it works the way you said.

To expand on that, here's what another poster said on that thread:

"You play a lot of games on your bracket (normal/high) and in different slots. According to your streak of wins, you'll finally get the blue/pink slot. And then it's when the lame starts. These matches will be something like "THE NEW TIER MATCH". If you are capable to somehow carry (not necessary with a carry hero) your team to a victory, you'll be able to procced to the new bracket."

This is the misconception he is trying to destroy. There are no brackets when the game is matching players, it's a continuous MMR system. That doesn't mean the filtering skill levels don't represent "brackets" of MMR.

He merely said that '2. The tiers you know from the Replay-Filters are not used in MM.', it doesnt translate to what you said. Not saying all you said is false (some of your points may actually be true) but it is definitely not how the current MM work atm because you are basically saying a 800gpm will automatically be considered as 'very high skill' game (it can be related but not definite factor for sure).

The bottomline is nobody knows how MM work (except valve) and the most logical explanation for MM would still be similar to hon/lol/sc2 because most of us experienced more or less the same.

edit: yo FW happy birthday! (guess it is on tomorrow? according to my secret contacts)

I agree. Just because it says m/h/vh isn't used in MM, doesn't mean it's not related to MM at all. All it means is they don't use your game distribution in the brackets to match you up with other players. I don't think anyone's contesting that fact. It's simply a way of classifying the games you play.

I think it's much easier to put this to rest than people think. If you're interested, do the following:
1) when you play a game, see what page it's on when it starts (this helps if you're in the first 10-20 pages, beyond that..)
1a) You'll notice that no matter how the game flows, you won't switch too much from page to page. The only reason you switch at all is more games made/ended ... 99% I stay on the same page +/-1. So the ordering of the pages has nothing to do with in-game performance of anybody. Further, since all the pros are always on page 1-2, it's a reasonable assumption that the games are ordered by MMR in some way (average MMR of all players in the game is my guess)

2) Take a note of how many pages there are in total when you play
3) Record what page percentile your game's in
4) Check what quality (m/h/vh) it was after it's done.

I've tried this for a bit. Every time I solo q and end up on pages <15, I'm always in vh. Regardless of how the game goes, even if it's a total feedfest.

Maybe someone can grab these statistics when they play.. Because I'm pretty sure that the simplest solution is the right one, which is:
-Watch tab games are ordered by MMR
-m/h/vh is simply a way of ordering what percentile you're on (e.g. top5% is vh, top20% is h, 75% is m. or something like that)
I don't see why it has to be more complicated than that, but again, someone can run some tests, and if you see you're on page 5/1500 but the game doesn't end up in vh, I'll eat my words!
(\o/)  If you want it, you find a way. Otherwise you find excuses. No exceptions.

Just found 2 visage hard counters.

I was quite far ahead, but suddenly WD got ags and Centaur got enough strength so that return does major dmg. Both abilities do heavy physical dmg, killing all 3 of my familiars instantly.

Centaur is pretty annoying as you literally cant touch him but Axe is ever worse. You cant even be close to that only-one-word-knowing retard or he shreds your familiars instantly(thank god they are immune to berserker call, though).

Close second is Omniknight. Purification destroys familiars and repel makes your day sad.

Some others that piss me of when Im playing visage:

Wisp: tether camping on top of resting familiars

Slardar: physical aoe stun nuke

Kunkka,Sven,Magnus: cleave, extreme positioning required to deal with.
