The key to randoming is actually repicking when you know you can't play that hero or attempting to swap. If you were really try harding in all pick you'd have one or two people random every game just for the extra gold.

Ya repicking is one of the best/wisest strategies in playing AP.
If anything, communicate with the team helps alot for AP games. For example you can ask do we have good mid player (if no you need to go mid) or when there is a weird pick (read as: generally known as low win rate pick), you will need to pick something that can help that hero to success or your tryhard hero to own hard to compensate the expected failure of that weird pick.

On a related note, randoming Pudge and repicking without asking if anyone wants to swap is a crime against humanity and should be punished.

I don't understand the reason to go random and get 250 bonus gold anymore. If you go random and get heroes you don't know how to play, 250 gold might help you, but most of the time, all I see is randoming and get 250gold gives you significantly advantage. Nowaday, people seem to play random to get 250 gold, not for the sake of random heroes anymore.
I hope they get rid of 250 gold bonus like HoN, or at least make it available for mid level games only. High/Very High level games should not have 250 gold bonus for going random.

As for repick: I know sometimes back in the day I used to repick heroes I thought were worthless or I wouldn´t trust a complete stranger to play. There is even a good tell I used to decide if i swapped or repicked. If someone is really eager to play, say, your randomed bloodseeker or barathrum, he probably is a player so bad he thinks those are super top picks. Ergo I would not give them those heroes.
That was btw in true random pubs in WC3.
