No, there isn't a direct comparison like that.

If anyone is Husky it's Purge by his role and place in the community. His knowledge might be marginally better (hard to make this comparison anyway, there is much more little stuff you can fill time with that is basic but useful for inexperienced players in dota. This is also what Tobi relies on often so it's definitely not a slight of any degree.) but close enough.

Dota seems like such a fun game but it has a huge drawback for me. You are forced to play until the end. What if I only feel like playing for about 15 minutes? In sc2 i can just quit the game and it doesn't matter. In cs or quake I can just hop in a game for about 10 minutes kill a few opponents and then leave. In poker i can hop on a table and leave after playing a few hands. But in games like dota it forces you to play. That's a huge turnoff to me for this genre. Anyone in a similar boat?

How does quiting a game in sc2 not matter? What about your opponent?

i thought that was a good pretty good comparison, both are fairly bad at the actual game but can really spice up a game when they cast

What do you mean when you say what about my opponent? If I leave for whatever reason he just gets a free win and we both move on with our lives. Or do you mean that my opponent will be expecting a meaningful game and if I leave I will take that away from him?

Yeah in SC2 leaving only hurts you. It wastes little of the opponent's time if any. Most of the time it saves them time. Unless we are talking about team games.
What does it matter how I loose it?

Though in all those examples your choice to leave is either a benefit to the other player(s) or your choices in the game that you left really don't effect a new player filling in your shoes (CS).

In dota your choice of hero and choice of lane creates a game state that probably would not be what someone else would choose. Never have I joined a CS game to find my character ran slower and could only use pistols because the guy who played before me set it up like that. There are rumors that valve wants to be able to let people be replaced in the matchmaking games if someone drops but the jury is still out on people's willingness to step in and fill the role someone else carved out and then vacated.

As a super team game -arguably more than CS at the causal level- your direct engagement in the pregame strategy determines how a lot the game will play out. And of course your performance in-game also shapes the outcome of the game drastically. A game of dota takes a while, 20 minutes to an hour and because of that no one wants to join a half done game that isn't in their favor and most people won't leave a game they are winning. So ultimately your causal mindset does not work well for a game of this length. The starcraft 2 analogy is the closest for game length but in dota if you leave you are messing with the four other people on your team which is never cool.

Ultimately its all that commitment, to your team, lane, hero -along with the time commitment- that make dota 2 as intense and interesting to play as it is. So if you can't commit to all those things, your experience will be greatly lessened.

Well twister talked a lot of shit when he left mouz. How he was unfairly treated etc etc. There were long threads on joindota and gosugamers. At the end of the day he was the weakest link which mouz showed with their plays afterwards.

This is internal stuff and should have stayed internal. Blaming people in public wont lead to anything good.

Wow, Blizzard. Really?

What do they not like about the old one? =(

Edit: Just noticed what disturbs me about the new one. I'd get kicked in the nuts if I'd take a photo of someone with that lighting. t.t

I´ve heard of the weirdness that was 5.xx Dota. There was a small compilation posted in a forum somewhere a couple years ago.
Nightstalker was Voidstalker and didn´t need night for full effect. Another Hero that was basically a siegetank, complete with immobile siegemode. Dozens of heroes with ensnare, long stun and/or avatar(Magic immunity) as skills. A hero that had 3 summon skills, so he could solo towers with ~10 summons around lvl 6. Original Invoker didnt have 10 spells. He had 27. The order in which you summoned Wex, Quas and Exort changed the skill you get too. The compilation was very funny.
I only once tried a pre 6.xx map, I think it was 5.83 or so, the last map before Icefrog took over. It had a very basic looking terrain, Chen had none of his skills he has now. Instead he had some generic crap and an orb that adds x% of his max hp in damage. The recipes had no icons. I´m pretty sure the items were very different too.
I played that map once or twice, but it felt unrefined to me.

I still remember my first map was somewhere around 6.30 or so. Mirana and Alchemist were my first new heroes. "Professional games" were played with teampick. TEAMPICK.
Sentinel could only pick Sentinel heroes and Scourge could only pick Scourge heroes. Sentinel was heavily favored because Beastmaster, Chen and Jakiro were much stronger back then(Also there were 2 other heroes that amde the standard Sentinel lineup which I don´t remember).
Chen was nerfed via nerf of jungle creeps. Jakiros double breath was like 110 mana on lvl 4, you could spam it forever.
Beastmaster Ult wasn´t nerfed until much later. Pre nerf the cooldown was 60s on all levels, manacost 150 all levels and range was somewhere around 1000 on all levels. 1000 range was awesome.

So much nostalgia.

....you have no idea of the brokeness that was floating around. people think overpowered now...rofl.

Gogo 5 meka/necros pokemon wars/sentry wards with full sight and duration as regular wards.

Beastmaster Hawk/Sniper scattershot/Brood webs having true sight...

Sniper's assassination cd, Clinkz being unkillable, Pugna, Lich, Axe, Pope Rocketfist, Alchemist's Greed had no limits lololol, Visage's Revenants tanking/attacking Roshan. SPECTRE.

Man, that wasn´t imbalanced.
Sniper Scattershot was only good for nuking towers, Brood webs were good but not gamebreaking. Spectre generated soooooo many whinethreads. I remember those vividly.
They didn´t really change much about Necrobook iirc but it´s not considered imba today. Those rules like max 2 necro, max 1 hex etc. per team was silly.
Sentry wards were imbalanced, that I give. Ward wars consisted of sentry vs, sentry.

The fact that Chens creeps had stacking speed auras(!) was broken as hell. 15% ms from centaur, 15% ms from satyr, 15%ms from taskmaster = 45% ms for the entire team.
Beastmaster and Jakiro able to instakill a creepwave, Chens creeps tanking the tower. Jakiro could spam dual breath all day without any items. It was my second version dualbreath got nerfed.
Beastmaster could Ulti you across an entire screen, every minute. That lasted more versions, but got changed too.
The bad part about this was that you couldn´t ban or pick the broken heroes away from your enemies.

And yes, scourge had better area damage with sand king, tidehunter, qop, leschrac, but it´s hard to use that to any effect if you get totally dominated and pushed by chen with 45% ms aura and being caught with 1000 range beastmaster ulti.
The damage of junglecreeps against towers was drastically nerfed, the creeps themselves were nerfed along with all the auras.
If I remember correctly the imba clinkz era came after that one sentinel lineup was fixed.
If nobody hates you, you´re doing something wrong. However someone hating you doesn´t make you right
