I'm sure you guys have seen this question a million times on different forums but unfortunately I can never seem to find a poll with a large (few hundred) number of responses. Naturally I figured TL would be a great place to pose this question.

I chose the DH because my two favorite classes to play in D2 were the Amazon and the Assassin (DH resembles a mix of these). Plus, being a former Warrior Gladiator in WoW I can honestly say I never want to play a melee class in PvP again...

I think the Monk will be the best class for Inferno, this is only based off of the skill tree though. I have no idea how his DPS will compare to others late game

Wizard, Barbarian, or Witch Doctor. Or Demon Hunter. I voted for Witch Doctor because it was on the bottom before my vote. My decision will actually be based on what my friends play. I plan to have 1 character I play with my buddy and 1 character I play on my own/with random people.

I'm playing the Barbarian first, for a couple of reasons. First of all, I loved the Diablo 2 story line, and Barbarians play a large role in the game a la the World Stone and Mount Arreat. The second biggest reason is that the Diablo 3 Barbarian is just plain fun to play. I'm in the beta, and time and time again I go back to smash face on the Barbarian. He may not be the flashiest, but smashing things is what I'm coming for when I play Diablo, so the Barbarian it is.
After I play the Barbarian, I plan on either doing the Demon Hunter or Wizard. I've played all of the classes in the beta so far. As a result of my play time, I just didn't like how the Witch Doctor felt in the early stages of the game, and the Monk felt like a less mean version of the Barbarian in terms of play style. I played a Warrior and Rogue in the original Diablo, so the Demon Hunter feels fine to me. The Wizard feels almost exactly like the Sorceress from Diablo 2, which I was also very fond of. Particularly fire Sorceresses. :D

I have 4 other friends and we all made sure we chose different starting classes in order to have the most fun!

I would like to play Wizard, but it will be most popular class, meaning highest prices for Wiz gear and additionaly somebody else has him reserved in my group already. I guess I will decide on launch day, just pick what I feel like playing :D

Still not sure, I've gotten all 5 to level 13 in the beta. I enjoyed the crap outta the monk, barb, wizard. WD and DH were less enjoyable to me, but not bad per se. Probably monk or wizard though

Witch doctor, I already have a funny build idea, and I like to play classes which are last on such polls, to stay a little away from the mainstream (not that it makes a difference in such a game).

I'm personally going to play a monk. History tells me though that the wizard is going to be the most popular. They have traditionally been the least gear dependent which usually makes them great as first characters, but on the other hand item scaling is going to be a little different this time around. We'll see what happens.

Probably a demon hunter, but it depends a bit on which classes that my friends pick.
Unfortunately, none of the classes is a perfect fit for me, from what I've seen so far.

I'd be interested in the results on a split of those currently in the beta and those not. I thought I would like the Demon Hunter more but the early levels in the beta put me off a little so I'll probably pick something else to start with.

I have had female dwarfs, orcs and taurens in wow so would most probably pick a female version if i wasnt done with melee classes. For reasons unknown to me i find "sexy characters" ugly and boring, its quite a sight when female dwarves come stomping on you.

I like the monk's abilities more, but the wizard's female character is so damn cool. Everything from her clothing, to her voice and quotes, so well done! She's quite the cool character.
So I'm torn between these two.
It's also interesting how the "original" gender for each class beats the hell out of the other gender. I've heard many males say they'd dislike playing a female character. IMO, the original gender just looks and sounds better, I've become more acquainted to them that way.

Female monk is good.
They didnt make her butch. And her combat moves look feminine but not girly.
Overly girly animations was a problem I had with WoW when making a melee human female.

If its anything like d2hc, melee classes have the toughest time surviving, especially in the beginning when you dont know what the monsters do. Meanwhile weak rangers can kite all day long without taking punishment

It's kind of funny. I cant stand the WD. A few of my friends, they are the "goofy" ones occasionally, and like to do derp shit ingames are really looking forward to the WD. It seems like he just has the most wacky skills and animations and draws that sort of crowd. My more serious gaming friends cant see themselves playing the WD. To each their own though. Bone necros were sick. Summoner necros were sick. You wont ever see a wd with an army of skeletons parading towards you. You're just gonna see two dogs nipping your ankles.

Wizard seems to be way more stronger/fun then any other class in beta.
Barbarian is for me by far the least fun class which has a crap resource mechanism and feels the most like d2 . If he stays like this i doubt ill even play him on release ever.
All other classes are pretty similar - witch doctor is underrated, he is pretty strong for pve, though his skill set seems kind of lacking pvp wise.
So yea, tune down wizard - tune up barb. :D

I fired up D2 a couple weeks ago have have been messing around with a Bone/Summon Necro in single player. Seriously...you can go through Normal and Nightmare.. and be totally naked (no...really) and not die. I think I had 3-4 deaths total before Hell.
I'm guessing (not in Beta) that I would go with a Witch Doctor as a first character.
Basing that on the assumption (and it's a big one) that a "pet" class can do more with less gear... or can get away with stacking more Magic Find / Gold Find gear early on than other classes.
Then once you've got the Farmer WD built up sufficiently.. then I can start trading gear for a 2nd class.

As a beta player, in order of fun, I'd probably rank it like this:
1. Barbarian
2. Monk
3. Witch Doctor
(Big difference here)
4. Wizard
5. Demon Hunter
Barbarian is just awesome. I love having reactive skills like revenge, makes things much more interesting. You also send shit flying all over the place and you just feel strong as fuck. Just awesome and fun feeling.
Monk is a close second though really you could argue for him being the most fun. Everything feels fast-paced and you feel like such a badass.
Witch Doctor is really cool because none of his attacks are really just direct damage, everything has some other effect or gimmick to it. This will probably end up being the class with the most crazy and overpowered tricks. There's so much potential for synergy and experimentation. If you prefer casters Witch Doctor should easily be your #1 choice.
Wizard just isn't as fun as the Witch Doctor. More direct damage and less tricks. Feels more vulnerable and plain in comparison.
Demon Hunter is just... I don't know, shitty feeling to me. Everything feels like it should be doing so much more than it does, and her kiting ability where she does a backflip is cool, but clunky and cumbersome. Think POTM leap from Dota, but you don't get to control when it's used directly.
That said I will probably go either Barb or Witch Doctor. I wanted to go Witch Doctor at first because with all the moves that aren't in beta I could see him easily being the most fun, but then again I've always loved Melee most, and the fact that the Male Barb is canonically the dude who killed Diablo the second time makes the story more interesting. Will I see him broing around with Cain? Beta says no, which seemed awkward and weird, but here's hoping for some bromance.

I have had the most fun with the WD(by far coolest class ever), but I just can't see myself playing any other than Wizard(because of D2) first. Monk/Barb is to me neither here nor there, they're both awesome, I just prefer ranged caster.

Unlike many of you, I have ever never played a spell caster in any table top or computer games (big fan of Conan here). I think it is finally time to play a Wizard.

I first beat Diablo with a warrior and Diablo 2 with a barbarian. It would only feel right to play that same barbarian again. And now that he has a bit of range it won't be so frustrating to deal with =D
I have no idea what my second class will be, but probably a Witch Doctor because I don't expect many of those to be running around.

Since Sorc was my fav in D2, I'm probably going Female Wizard first, but we'll see. I've already got a chart about what to name all my characters for each class & gender; names that sound good, fitting, and are all connected. Quite pleased with it.
As far as the: "What Gender will you play as for each class?" poll, it's a bit weird since you can only vote once, but I think most people will agree with me if I say this:
Barbarian - Male
Wizard - Female
Demon Hunter - Female
Witch Doctor - Male
Monk - Both, mostly Male

I Love any class that maximizes efficientcy. For me that means WD or Wizard.
My List from first played to last is most likely:

Male Barbarian

Female DH
The wizard just feels so good, kills barrels like a badass and Their abilitys are just fun!
And barbarians are just badass. Holy hell its fun to make zombies FLY!

Is it just me who never understood the point of playing HC? Sure, there's an increased level of intensity and makes it all feel a lot more real and challenging, but how can it be worth it? You'll constantly be nervous about screwing up and dying. It's just sooo not worth the risk of losing everything for nothing. I've went HC in D2... it's something I've done once, and will never do again. It does nothing but make you feel terrible, and you can never have fun while playing either.

Some people only like HC for some reason SC players cant understand.
I myself play SC now and the one thing I really hate about it (and why Im so excited about D3) is that SC is too HC... You can ladder only if you feel good enough or you will lose a lot of points. Diablo SC was always different, you can play/ladder whenever you want - when you are sick, drunked or whatever you want and its ok... While HC in D2 was little more challenging.
I say D2 was just little more challenging than SC because there was quick exit/save, TPs, reroll... D3 will be different - connection losts, lags and all kinds of crap mean deaths.
So for me its pretty clear, when I will feel good enough for HC I will go play SC, when I will want SC I will go play D3.

I rolled a Wizard for beta, but I think I'll go Barbarian for release, *IF* I decide to buy it. Wizard is pretty fun, but barbarian leap attack looks so fking fun!

Playing the beta has changed my mind.
It was going to be :
1. Barb
2. DH
3. WD
4. Wizard
5. Monk
Edit : After playing all 5 :

WD
Barbarian felt the strongest the quickest but not really epic and the skills were meh overall. DH felt weak until level 6-7 and new weapons then became very easy. Monk was good all along and felt like I actually had a chance to die (didn't die but I went to half health once at least...). Skills were far more interesting than the other 2 classes.
Not sure if I will enjoy the casters or not yet, they could be 2-3 or 4-5.
I've noticed that for both DH and Monk all the generator skills are pretty boring. Definitely the first skills I will rune as the spenders are much more fun overall. I know that's somewhat on purpose but it was pretty bad, especially for DH until you get entangling shot (which isn't amazing).+ Show Spoiler +

can anyone explain when you leave a game theres a 10 second countdown? If your playing hardcare and your about to die obviously u cant wait 10 seconds, u'd have to alt-f4

Your character will still be ingame for 10 seconds even if you alt-f4 I imagine. If you leave while in town there's no timer.
I'll let you take a guess why (hint : you already told us the reason).

it's a measure to prevent the creation of auto quit bots in hardcore probably. Also to insure that all items etc picked up is accounted for maybe.,

How is Wizard not overpowered? I only played the beta a few hours, maxing out witch doctor and wizard and my God does the Wizard do tons of damage o_O
Perhaps Im missing a few things in understanding the beta?

Witch Doctor damage is very underwhelming compared to the other ranged classes, the Wizards damage is by far better than all of them. Still in beta though so things could change a lot and it's only up to level 13 anyways. I personally like the Barb and Monk. I'm leaning towards Monk being my first.

I will prob roll a monk first, and use it to max my blacksmith and collect items for my next char: demon hunter or wizard. The monk to me by far had the most killing power for the least amount of gear, and I'd use this to quickly get to a higher level to twink out my next few chars.

A male barb, although a wizard seemed to pump out an ungodly amount of damage when I rolled one.

I was planning on going Barb.
Then i got the beta and leveld a barb to 13.
I know its hard to tell what the late-game barb will be like from the beta, but i'm a little underwhelmed and bored by the skills so far so now i plan to check out the other classes

And the male DH is looking pretty badass there tbh^^.

Gonna choose DH but i worry the class will lack in power in the endgame, simply because you seem very limited in your ability to spam AoE abilities, which everyone knows is the essence of Diablo. Cant be autoattacking on max level, goddamn!

Eh I wouldn't count out the AoE options that easily. For example with yellow gems you can have grenades generating 7 hatred and multishot taking 7 hatred for 140% lightning damage which is a sustainable combo you can use as fast as the animations will allow.
There's also a lot you can do with the rocket spec to get a lot of aoe damage or making use of attack speed increases. Sure your attack may not be aoe, but if you're attacking at 500% attack speed for almost no hatred it's not all that different.
I think it's just the case where runes are key for DH's AoE damage rather than the base abilities.

I plan on making a Monk my 2nd character, I think they will be the most OP class initially but I just love the DH too much to choose anything else as my first character.

After playing all of the characters in beta, I'm going to definitely roll first a male barb. No question this class owns in the beta and for me has brought the most joy. Just being able to leap over objects, up paths, across gaps, down paths etc is so much fun.
I was really surprised at how fun DH and Monk's were. I went into beta thinking those two were garbage cans and I'd never like them.
Part of me wants to roll monk first since they seem more rare as it is. however, in every game i play the hybridish support role and a lot of times i regret it because it's not as cool, or helpful as the game tries to trick you into believing. So i think I may stick to my guns this time and go barb.
Either way from what I can tell so far in beta (not much) gearing alts is a breeze.. so nobody should be too sad if the first class the roll isn't so good, you can gear up and get ready quickly on a new character.

Cool, thx for a nice reply. I havent played the beta per usual with Blizz games -.- so only watched videos and most people run out of hatred very fast and are stuck autoattacking.

I actually didn't have that problem at all when I was playing through the beta.
I used hungering arrow as my 'standard attack' (it has 35% chance to pierce and hit 2nd target) and backed it up with elemental arrow that was an AoE for wiping everything.
It's possible you saw videos from before where all attacks CONSUMED hatred. In the last (or 2nd to last) beta patch 1/2 of the DH's skills GENERATE hatred now making her flow much better.

After having played through Beta using all 5 classes, I found Wizards to be the most fun. Witch Doctor seems a little weak compared to the other classes. Just didn't deal enough damage. :/

I'll be wizard or demon hunter. Barb is great but I don't think it can tear through the game as fast (tho maybe that changes after u get whirlwind). I think wizard will be fastest at getting through the game, but demon hunter might be more fun

Monk because of my fascination with Martial Arts.
Demon Hunter because DH was my favourite in WC3. I know they have nothing in common except the name. Still enough for me though :D
