The OSL format has changed dramatically. Starting this OSL, any Starcraft player over the age of 12 will be able to participate in an open prelim, named MyStarleague. Previously only for progamers, amateur players will now have a new way to participate in the OSL. OSL Director Kwak Jae Geun said, "From those who are just taking a break from BW to old fans to new players who may not know Boxer and Yellow (T/N: really? everyone, regardless of age, should know about them if they play SC at any level), there are still many players out there with hidden potential. Responding to these fans' desires, we have created this new opportunity for them to inspire a sense of belonging and solidarity amongst the players at large and to expand our E-sports base."
This national starcraft project MyStarleague will take place in 6 locations: Pusan, Kwangju, Daegu, Kangwon Daejeon, Kyungin, and Seoul. Each region will have 4 representatives for a total of 24 representatives who will play in a grand final to be narrowed down to 12 players. The final 12 will then be able to go to Yongsan to participate in the Starleague's Pro-amateur prelims (T/N not sure what the 암 of 프로-암 means). Throughout this process the coaches and notable players of each Progaming Team will be scouting for prospects.
The registration will begin on March 31st at ongamenet.com, and the prelims will open on April 10th at Pusan and will go on for 6 weeks.
MyStarleague's 6 regional prelims will air every Wednesday and Friday at 7:30 PM starting April 20th, and the national grand finals will broadcast live from May 25 (Wed) to May 27 (Fri).
OSL Producer Won Suk Joong said, "The progaming teams who are predicted to be scouting in MyStarleague are putting big expectations on this and are looking to participate actively. This will be a festival in which pros and amateurs will come together."
Meanwhile, the OSL is getting rid of the Ro36 format to resurrect the Ro24 Dual Tournament format, and the OSL proper will be from Ro16.
MyStarleague registration dates: Pusan: March 31st - April 5th Kwangju/Jeju: April 6th - April 12th Daegu: April 13th - April 19th Daejeon/Kangwon Province: April 20th - April 26th Kyoungin: April 27th - May 10th Seoul: May 4th - May 10th

I'm relatively new to BW, but it seems to me the format changes every couple of seasons. That being said, how does the Ro24 Dual Tournament format work? That's from before my time, I think...
암 is obvious am(ateur) -_-. pro-am is a common term used in sports.
anyway this is amazing, i wasn't a big fan of the ro36 being integrated into the osl proper. good to see the dual tournament return.
i guess the amateur tournaments were made to combat the lack of professionals playing these days. so much for gretech bragging that their sc2 qualifiers were 'open'.
Hehe you're speedy My translation was just more flowery, but yours is to the point. And yeah, 프로-암 is Pro-Amateur.
I was skeptical of this at first, but I think this will be really good for helping the Korean BW scene to grow more and the eSports scene in general. Plus the fans might get to play against their favorite progamers! Although the amateurs might get crushed painfully by the pros, it will be an honor for them to play against progamers. I have nothing but great optimism for this event. Thanks for the translation!

grossly suggests that there won't be an actual osl to be broadcast, but rather this 'amateur' qualification league, for the next two months?! unless they use the internet broadcasting service, but why let it broadcast at the same time as your premiere event.
on second thought, this might be just a ploy from ogn to just buy time to find a sponsor.

I believe so? Some Korean netizens are like "Wtf is this, now the OSL will be delayed even more -__-"
There's also a possibility that Effort might participate in this. :OOO Maaaaaaaaybe though. Slight chance. We will know on either the 30th or later.

The next OGN/MBC vs Blizzard trial is on May 13th. Dragging this out till then?
I have this terrible feeling this is not going to end well, but may that just be a feeling.
This is a good opportunity for amateurs now that wcg is gone i hope it doesn't delay the osl for 2 months though -_- i'm also curious if it will have citizenship requirements? likely not but it's just something that popped into my head
So much for BW being dead. ^^ I hope foreigners will have a chance to try their luck there as well. Just imagine - someone like Kolll participating, somehow miraculously tearing through the korean amateurs and getting snagged by a weak team, such as MBCGame HERO (sorry, guys, you have only 5 players with ELO scores :S), and even receiving airtime?
Hell yes! Ret did it, so maybe someone else will meet more success?

It looks like the OSL is pushing to be a truly nationwide tournament with these open prelims. Even if you don't make it to the end, if you play well, you will get scouted and just might be picked up. The scouting part really makes me giddy.
holy shit!!! But wait, how does this actually work? I didn't understand the format completely. Amateurs get their own prelims and the final 12 can go to OSL and compete with pros for the starleauge gold?
This is a pretty clever move. It's no secret that the number of amateurs has decreased since sc2 released - all the previous talk about declining b-teams and lower draft numbers all point to that. This prelim will help drag new players out of the woodwork and revitilize the amateur scene to some extent. Plus the GSL moved from being an open tournament to a more closed format not too long ago. This announcment couldn't have come at a better time.
It's going to be interesting to watch some of the Korean amateurs play it out in this new league. The level of play is definitely not going to be on par with that of S-class progamers, though it should still be cool to see what kind of interesting strats will come out of these lesser players.
Seems like a cool way of scouting for new talents. It certainly would be cool to see a select few people pull out ahead of the masses and show us some progamer-level games.
Whoa, this is pretty crazy. So this means you don't need a progamer license to be able to compete, right? If so, how does KeSPA feel about this? Am I misinterpreting this entirely?
It's always nice to see some changes in the BW scene though. It's nice that they're trying new stuff with it.

I hope it works out for the best.
Nope, no progamer license required for it, which is why there is a slight possibility for Effort to show up at this kind of event. The average Joe can enter the league, and KeSPA probably allowed all this to happen. This is more of a scouting opportunity though to find new talent rather than a 10 year old taking home the gold. (Although it can happen!)
WAIT WAIT WAIT.... Does this mean any player pro or not can participate in these prelims? Obviously top tier players like Flash, Bisu, and Jaedong will stay the fuck away from each other in hopes of not getting knocked out in prelims. This does mean that players will be carefully picking their locations based on who's playing where. No one in their right mind would go to flash's location.

No no no. The whole prelims held in different areas thing is only for average people. The progamers get their whole thing later, with the group selections and all that good jazz. The different areas are for picking the best players in each region so that they can all duke it out with each other in the end and hopefully, best case scenario, get picked up by a progaming team.
Wow, this is the only noteworthy piece of news in BW since the match-fixing scandal first broke. Might be too little too late to save BW but good job nonetheless to the bosses at OGN.

O thanks for clearing that up, it seemed like a premade bracket in the making. Well in that case, THIS IS AWESOME!!! Going to see Effort, Terror, Minus)Eagle, and maybe even Rekrul and Ret (I hope) kicking some ass! This is epic, way to make it big OSL!

Okay phew. Scared the crap out of me. So if I'm interpreting this correctly, then this regional prelims thing will yield a set of players who will then compete in the regular OSL prelims, and the players advancing from the regular prelims will go on to the Dual Tournament?

What phosphorylation said, yes. The whole Dual Tournament thing is kinda funky though, so hopefully we'll be provided with more details soon. But what an honor - to be able to play against progamers! A dream come true for Starcraft fans!
I still don't understand how this is related to the OSL. Does this replace the OSL? Is it completely disjointed? Are the winning armatures given seeds in the group selection?
It's a great opportunity for the teams after the recent draft. Almost everyone was drafted, and some weird choices have been made (3Z for SKT and 2T for MBC ?). That shows how teams are hungry of new players. I hope they will also make some side shows about teams looking for players after the games. I can't wait to see this ! OGN fighting !
Good move, great answer to the player pool stagnation. I like that amateurs will now be included in the qualifiers and the return of the Dual Tournament. This is a great move to increase BW longevity.
EDIT: Also as others have realized this means EffOrt can come back much sooner than expected :D

Dunno if it would be a good idea for EffOrt to participate in this. He may be a bit out of shape after his temporary retirement, but he is still a force to be reckoned with, especially compared to amateurs. Since the main purpose of this league is to bring the spotlight onto some new blood for BW, I think it would be wise to let the amateurs have their moments of glory.
Makes me want to fly out to Korea and try to win an OSL
Seriously though, this is really really exciting news. It'll be cool to see amateurs play against progamers. I'll bet some of them will be able to compete.

True. However, I'm just afraid that a semi-former progamer like Effort has a good chance of roflstomping their way through the league and winning it uncontested. Having someone like Effort in the league seems really risky. On one hand, it can allow competent amateurs to get noticed if they play well against him. On the other hand, there is no guarantee that there won't be a complete roflstomp from him.
This is pretty awesome. I wish the dates weren't spread out so much though, this is going to take a long time :/. I was originally thinking that if Blizzard has their way in the lawsuit the next OSL could be the last OSL unless they start and wrap it up fast then maybe they'd be able to squeeze in 2 more, but if things turn out for the worse this could the last one D: .
eh i hope the regular osl is concurrent with this otherwise it will take too long :S
That said, good initiatie and probably will be entertaining. But i don't know just how many amateurs will be good enough. The good ones are probably been on the radar of the pro teams so i am not sure how many hidden gems will be uncovered. Hoping to be pleasantly surprised.
This is really cool but....delayed OSL. Glad the OSL is heading away from the strict progaming license only bullshit though. Hopefully theres some good untapped talent out there.

won't make a difference for the osl, sure; for the proscene as a whole, i disagree

Most of us know that the amatures have little chance of getting up there, aside from maybe Effort. But this kind of thing creates great hype and gets them more interested in BW, which is exactly what is needed.
By the way, what the hell does 'T/N' mean, and why's it used so excessively? I've been on the internet every single day for like 15 years and have never saw that before. lol.

T/N=Translator's Notes Usually used to note uncertainties in translations, or to explain references and things like that. I'm incredibly surprised to hear that you've never seen T/N in 15 years.
can anybody confirm whether or not this new initiative is going to delay the next OSL? Or will there be one sometime soon and these prelim stages will take place near the end in time for the next one at the end of the year? Its a hang of a long time to wait for an OSL if we do have to wait that long...
Otherwise I think this is brilliant! It really going to create a great atmosphere and its going to (hopefully) bring out some new stars... I will lmao if its flash or Jaedong against some amateur in the final, that would be amazing (although I am aware of just how ridiculous that idea is).
I wonder if this program will catch enough Korean viewers, though (by the way, is the high school starleague still broadcast on television?)
Let's take a sample from TL:
Would you guys watch games between top amateurs and/or top amateurs vs progamers? Pretend you have access to a reliable stream, the production quality is decent, and the broadcast times are good for your schedule.
Open OSL! TSL is great because anyone can get involved and play, nice to see Koreans do this too.
Bad:
ODT. There's very little separating the OSL and MSL format-wise now, plus the tough format of the Ro36 meant that being in the Ro16 actually meant something. Why would you replace a format that gave you consistently better champions than the MSL with the MSL format?
Wow...this is great news. I don't think the results will be very surprising though...BW isn't SC2, where any random amateur jobber who plays a few hours a day can beat a pro. Anyways, always good to see a 'possible' influx of new talent.
I think most people are misunderstanding how the ODT and amateurs are going to work. In the past, the ODT had a ro36 qualifier with 18 people from qualifiers and 18 from the previous ro24 (top 6 seeds are exempt). These players were cut to 18 by dual-elimination MSL format, top 2 advancing and top 2 eliminated. These 18 were selected into groups by the 6 seeds from previous OSL and that forms the ro24. The ro24 is cut to ro16 by taking the top 2 players from each spot for 12 spots, and then the 3rd place from each of the 6 groups are split into 2 groups of 3 and play for the 4 remaining spots, making the ro16 for the OSL proper.
If they are resurrecting this format, it seems like the amateur prelims only give them the chance to play in a pro-am prelim. From the information given and a little speculation, those 12 final amateurs that get to play in the pro-am prelims will likely be joined with the 24 players from the previous ro36 that didn't get into the ro16 or 24 players who go through offline prelims for pros. That will make up the ro36, and then it'll follow the previous format. The only thing is that they will need the 4 players that were 5-8th from the previous OSL (Hyuk, Mind, Kal, Hiya who were eliminated in the quarterfinals) to play a set to determine the 5th and 6th place seeds for the ro24 group selections.
This means that we could see anywhere from 0-12 amateurs in the ODT, let alone the OSL proper. It's actually possible that none of them would make it past the ro36 to get into the actual ODT. This makes it basically the same as before, except that instead of all pros trying out in the prelims, it'll be a mix of pros and amateurs.
^ That is never going to happen. There is a big skill-gap between pros and amateurs. The only amateurs who stand a chance of making it into the OSL proper are former pros.

Thanks for explaining, this clears up a lot of things. A very complicated format indeed.
Edit: Or could the "pro-am prelims" refer to the offline prelims that they held at Yongsan for pros? So instead, 12 amateurs together with all the pros will compete the offline prelims for spots in the ODT?
I hope OGN provides more details on the actual format soon.
Fantasy, Stork, Calm, Modesty seeded into OSL. All other players from last seasons OSL Ro16 automatically into the Dual Tournament (to make 6 groups).
From the amateur qualifiers, 12 will qualify into the offline qualifiers for the Dual Tournament, where they will be mixed in with the pool of progamers. From there, only 12 (out of all the pros/ams) will qualify for the Dual Tournament to join the 12 players from last seasons OSL.
Out of the Dual Tournament (which is MST style), only 12 will qualify out of 24 to the next OSL.

Yes, but under this format why should someone like Effort be denied a chance to qualify for the OSL? Scouting is one major purpose of this tournament, but it is first and foremost an OSL qualifier and I don't think its reasonable to say that a player can't try to qualify because he may be way above the level of the rest of the players in the qualifier.
This is alot like golf qualifiers for the U.S. Open. You have a bunch of amateurs but many of the participants include PGA Tour pro's that won't obtain exemptions through regional or sectional qualifiers through their play on tour.
Also, I love these changes! Excellent way to scout for new talent and I love the format of an open tournament. While its incredibly unlikely some amateur will qualify for, and then win, an OSL it still makes for great entertainment with that possibility lurking, and I am sure we will eventually seem some decent runs by amateurs that will add alot of suspense to the tournament.

"really?" I've got a number of friends who play StarCraft casually and most of them have absolutely no interest in the pro-scene. Just because you consider Boxer and Yellow important doesn't mean that they are important to everyone.
I rather dislike opinionated translator notes.
The return of the dual tournament is great news though!
Wow this sounds pretty big, hope it'll be awesome. Hearing the OSL and Bnet attack come back makes my heart wam :D I don't know how long the ameteurs will last but they might now get a small chance to shine a little.

If it takes 2 months just to do the amateur trials, it's going to take 4-5 months to finish one OSL. Does this mean there will only be 2 OSLs a year?

I'm gonna guess the amateur tournament is going to take place simultaneously to the OSL?
Somehow missed this thread, was wondering where the OSL was at. According to the OP, prelims should be done, any word on when it gets real and the pros/RO32 start?

I'm wondering the same. Any word on the proper Ro32 start time?
They need to get this going soon. The ultimate weapon want's his platinum mouse.
