I'm an off and on student at the local community college depending on the availability of work and the schedule that comes with it. Last summer I was working as a fire alarm tech / electrician. I spent a few months working under the table for $400/week (40hrs@10/hr) basically just pulling wire, cutting holes in the walls and sticking up Horns/Strobes/Pull Stations/Smoke Detectors and the like. In true construction worker fashion I blew the majority of the money on inebriating substances and several bushels of Maryland Blue Crabs. Basically making sure my friends and I stayed well saturated with ethanol and stuffed with seafood. All good things sadly come to an end. When our contract ran up I lived off what little I saved up until about a month ago.

Last month I started a new job making considerably less by the end of the week (a combination of a lower hourly wage, 30 hour work week, and taxes). I went from the construction/installation side of things to being a dispatcher for a local alarm company. The biggest benefit of my schedule is the three day work week (which is spent behind a computer that may not receive any alarms on a slow night) and thus the four day weekend. I plan to use all this spare time to the best of my ability throughout this fall and winter when I'll be taking Cisco Networking I and Cisco Networking II followed by III and IV in the Spring. The local community college will be getting about $1700 of my hard-earned after all is said and done but I'll be walking away with a CCNA Cert. and credits I can use toward an Associates Degree in Information Systems Security.

With a bit of luck I'll be up another rung or so on the ladder by next fall and taking my next round of classes.

I am a lighting designer and programmer for a audio/video company. Basically, I go to very rich people's houses and make all the lights in their house turn on and off via keypads, tv remotes, or by in-wall touch screens. All of the exterior lights are on timers that will cause them to turn on at sunset and off at midnight, sunrise, or whenever. It's all very high-tech, but really easy to do.

I'm thinking about getting my certification in massage therapy.

I always wanted to do something similar but I'm not familiar with a lot of commercial software and hardware used for the task. I tend to stick to F/OSS and have built a couple MythBoxes and MAME cabinets for friends. I imagine Smart Home setups wouldn't be hard to pick up on. The hard part would probably just be finding the work around here.
