So recently I was playing some iccup and she decided that she wanted to play too. At first she wanted to play on iccup too but I recommended against it. So she played a few games on my old bnet account and went 0-14 and got discouraged and wanted to play me.
So then I played her. First game was ZvT on Python, me Z at 6, her T at 12. I didn't want to beat up on her too bad so I went for 3 hatch no pool into double expo at corner and other main after pool, then made 36 speedlings and went for dual evo triple gas hive rush, and took another main/nat and both islands after hive and took my hatch count up to 25 at 12 minutes. She said that I was "qi fu ren" (or being mean to her).
So then next game was on othello and I was P, and she was T, and I went trip nexus before gate into 9 base carrier into 9 base mass gate + arb. She said that again and now refuses to play with me.
Do you think I was too mean to her?
|
it was mean not to show her how to play the game.
|
There's a thread where you can post a picture of your girlfriend in the General forums.
|
haha i could see that from her point of view, you should have just had fun with her, sent a few marines in when you knew she could take care of them etc
|
No, not really but maybe you should teach her.

You sound like a terrible teacher. You're basically going "ahahahaha look how good I am"

show her progaming to give her an idea of wtf terran shud do aginst zerg. dont show her recent games. show her old boxer games with highlights that will keep her hooked.

lol schooling her =/= teaching her starcraft XD
maybe start with micro battles? :0

It's difficult imo, you don't wanna beat them really, but they still wanna play you. But I agree.
|
I had the EXACT same reaction from my sister a few years ago when I tired to teach her. She'd say, "I'm not going to be your practice. You're just being mean." This was after she insisted I teach her... I just gave up. In hindsight I was being a jerk. Playing a 1v1 versus someone who just picked up the game is ridiculous.
I really don't know how to induce a different reaction by doing this. This isn't just a hard game it is totally unforgiving. A better player is obviously better than a worse one and you can't do anything about that. It's hard for a new player to start up, even harder if you're being destroyed by someone you have an attachment to while they don't even need to try.
So in my opinion DO NOT PLAY VERSUS HER!
You could 2v2 versus comps. If she doesn't know all the units yet you might even want to try playing together switching off and explaining what you do as you do it. (Team melee even)
|
|
roflthread.
Yeah, you're pretty much a jackass. You could have played a 2v1 with her against computers to get her started and interested in the game. Aid her, I dunno, to victory or something? But no, you chose to humiliate your girlfriend.
Once again: roflthread.

It's not that hard to teach people without steamrolling them, come on. Teach her the fundamentals and explain why she should do certain things. Don't even tell her which units are good at the start, just explain where they come from and how they operate. Play 2v1 comp to start.
Of course this is all assuming you actually have an interest in getting her into starcraft.
|
You have to teach how to play before you play her lol
|
yeah you were being pretty mean imo she was just curious about the game and you roflstomped her
|
Did you call her a skilless fucking newbie during the games as well?

play without the keyboard

you shoulda played vs comps for sure. you choose to play her 1v1 and then take advantage of her not knowing what she's doing by making lots of hatches and workers.
|
If she actually does want to learn her game, teach her to macro first. Once her APM goes up and she gets a feel of controlling the game she'll be able to advance from there. It's simply impossible to start touching the strategy element of a strategy game if you have no physical ability to control your stuff, and I'm guessing this is the first RTS game she plays.
Do stuff like getting to 200/200 supply in 11 minutes with protoss by starting with a PvT b/o where you get 4 goons before expanding to nat, and force rules like get at least 50% goons so that you don't just spam zea. Once she can do this sort of macro properly, play micro maps with her, teach her to kill infinite zealots with 4 goons, kill infinite speedzea with 6 speedvult, vult+mines against goons, M&M control vs speedlings and lurkers.
If she's motivated, and you actually teach her the basics like this instead of just trashing her in 1v1, she'll get a good hang of those stuff in 2-3 weeks and will be able to start playing on iCCup and improving on her own.
Playing vs comps is pretty much a waste of time and I don't recommend that. Just teach her all the units and abilities in a maps with 1-2 of everything and do what I wrote up after that. Also do limited 1v1s once in a while so that she doesn't get bored of the macro practice, by limited I mean stuff like PvP where you're only allowed to build probes and zealots and no other units, to let her have fun and actually see herself improving slowly.

BTW if you want to know how she feels I'm available tonight to "teach you" how to play Starcraft.

I once tried to teach my girlfriend hot to play SC.
She knew the game before, having played it when she was little, but knew nothing about competitive gaming.
We played 1v3 on Python and i ended getting owned by the two computers, with some help from her.
She rubbed it in my face for many days = (.

If you really want to teach her, do the following: Make a UMS for her with a bunch of computer buildings/units that just sit around in different places, without attacking her, and let her figure out how to build up a base and control her units in her own pace while you guide her gently. Dont pressuring her to keep constant probe production or anything, just give her enough information so that she can move up the tech tree and build up an army. Let this take as much time as she needs, as long as she seem to be into it. Dont place out too many units to start with (maybe even start with a total of 10-20 low tier units or so, with some basic buildings). Better to let her finish the first verion of the map early, and you can do a second version with more resistance. That will only make her proud that she beat the map faster than you expected, which is good and will motivate her.
Then when she gets the basics down, and insists on playing you, then you play really slowly, and stay at about her level both in micro, macro (not that easy to do). You can still have good habbits like scouting, to encourage her to do the same, but dont react with too hard counters to what you see (sometimes even the oposite, so she sees which of her units are good aginst which of yours). Never roll her over completely. Let her win when she plays well, and punish her when she makes a misstake that she "shouldn't" do. Keep her win ratio at about 50%, to keep the excitement up. If you let her win all the games, the wins will not be as fun for her. Point here is that you should try to not show exactly how much you could beat her up. she will ofc realise that you are not playing at 100%, but it would probably discourage her to know exactly how far behind she is. guess you have blown that part already though. :D
Then eventually she can play the computer, and then maybe two, and when she has beaten 2 comp for the first time, let her try a 1on1 LT NOOBS ONLY on bnet, to eventually give her her first real win. Then when she has tasted n00b blood, she will crave for more, and MORE AND MOARRRR!!!1
gl and more importantly hf
|
just play mouse only or touchpad or something if you want the game to be close. oh yea, and you might want to actually tell her how to play

You're a jackass. Your entire post was just showing off the builds you did to stomp your girlfriend who doesn't know how to play. Teach her to play before you play her. It's called common sense.

Couldn't say it better, you should have let her play the campaign and giver her pointers, now you made yourself look like a jerk
|
taking whole map is kinda mean.
|
Just play with one hand or something. Give yourself as many handicaps as you need to make it possible for her to win games. Also make sure she knows how much of an advantage you years of experience is giving you so she doesn't feel bad that you have to handicap yourself... Perhaps make an analogy, like if you tried to do her makeup it'd take tonnes of handicaps for her to be as bad as you at it.
That's what I do when I have to play a girl in StarCraft.
And don't just make her play campaign... That's stupid. She wants to do something with you. There probably isn't a genuine desire to get super good at the game, even if she does play it casually.
And don't hardcore teach her build orders hotkeys and everything... She'll just get bored or not retain much of it and you'll feel like an idiot.

You should feed here plenty of units for her to destroy and feel like she is in the game, and when you go to beat her, don't crush her, just take your time.
|
You have a way with crushing peoples souls t_co. Show a little mercy- at least for your gf
|
Be careful bro, after what you did, it's either, she'll break up with you, or she'll get hooked to the game, and eventually beat you... Damn, happened to me when my close girl friend (not it has a space) tried to place sc. damn, I lost lol, she even beat me to C- ~_~
BTW: Like the others say, teach her, the basics, meaning, basic basic. not even probes or expanding, like how to make units, what to do when your out of supply
I like to add aswell, after teaching her, and beating her first computer on her own (no coaching), congratulate her, she'll be like so happy about it. Yah.. good times.

Did you actually teach her how to play it? Also a few game's isn't 14. I would be lucky to play 14 games in a day lol
|
Sounds more like you went out of your way to make someone hate a game o.o
Million ways to go about it, so just make sure it's fun / interesting. APM practice maxing out under 12 minutes might sound interesting to TL members, but that doesn't seem like the way to bring someone into a game for fun lol
A good rule of thumb when playing with someone who's new is to only use what they have access to. If they only play at 40 apm, you should as well. If they can't remember to keep mining over 3 bases, you shouldn't either. If they don't know build orders to use, use the time to mess around and make up some kooky bo's of your own.
Everyone is different though, so roll with what works!

Only 2 things to teach a noobie:
Never stop making workers. Always spend your minerals (and gas).
Once they have that shit down, they will either figure out what to do on their own; or you can start showing them how to do the aforementioned rules more efficiently ie; build orders).
|
pshhh what kind boyfriend r u.
be a man. limit yourself only make probe and oberservers and win it that way
no i jk
but i think you need let her win to give her some confidence and constructive criticism?

Why would you even stomp your gf at a game she has never played? :/

Play some UMS games that pit you against the computer - like Starship Troopers or something.
Also, don't "teach" her how to play - just let her learn by herself and help her when she has questions. None of this strict training regimen crap; she just wants to play for fun and because it's I'm assuming a significant part of your life. She's your gf first and a "student" second (if you even want to think of it that way).

When I just started playing SC I did everything possible to attack my enemy ASAP, standard 2gate PvT, anything. It's more fun like that when you know you're not going to use lategame to its full potential anyway.

I did that once, we played one garment per game, and I cheese-5-0-ed her in 1 hour (tried everything I could think of, including the first-4-probe-rush. Then she refused to strip. I felt cheated. So that should only be played with a girlfriend, when you know she'd strip afterwards anyway.

I can play with her if you like. I am KESPA-confirmed to be the worst StarCraft player in history, so she would have a very high chance of victory against me.
Anyway, my suggestion would be to take a 3-5 second brake after every action you make. That should significantly slow down your APM and make it more an even match. Also, teach her a basic Terran build order. We can talk about mechanics all we like, but a player still needs to follow a certain pattern in order to improve in mechanics.

Instead of going no gate 20 nexus or w/e, just keep sending her a zealots at a time and let me get used to the game, something like that. If 1 zealot destroying everything, point out her mistakes, teach her counters and tricks (marine between buildings), etc.
Or rather, just start off with a simple UMS game or the campaign.
