I thought it was always highest seed vs lowest seed :O I think it has always been the way it is now. The rule change that I assume you mean happened in 2005 if I'm not mistaken, and it only seeds teams in the initial brackets according entirely to record. Before the rule change, the winners of each division of each conference were always the top three seeds for their conference.

1vs8 4v5 2vs7 3v6 Winner of 1vs8 vs winner of 4vs5 Winner of 2vs7 vs winner of 3vs6 I always thought it was highest seed vs lowest seed in second round and then the other two teams play. O_O

Actually, I'm looking into it a bit more and it seems this isn't the case at least in the case of the last three years and from what it looks like, this year. :\ On April 23 2009 12:10 il0seonpurpose wrote: Dknight, in NCAA, it is actually 1vs16, and then the winner of that plays the winner of 8vs9. So I guess in a sense, both NBA and NCAA brackets are set up so that the middle seaded team (either 4 or 5 in NBA or 8 or 9 in the NCAA) always play the number one seed (assuming they advance) Yeah, I know that o_O.

The seeding is different. Now it's Division Winners automatically having the top 3 out of 4 seeds regardless of the records of everyone else. It's a shitty system in most respects because if one division was just absolute garbage (imagine Kings, Warriors,Thunder, Clippers are one) one of those teams bumps a better team out the playoffs and gets the #8 seed a ridiculously easy matchup. The only thing saving the NBA from this setup is that with 82 games and enough good teams per division it's unlikely to happen.
