I'm curious about whether certain prescription drugs can alter your play.
I took an Adderall earlier for assistance in working on a philosophy term paper. I'm sure anyone who's ever taken Ritalin or Adderall or any similar stimulant understands how it affects your thinking and focusing. Your thoughts become much more streamlined and efficient. Your focus becomes much sharper, and whatever you're focusing on becomes easier to absorb.
I'm wondering if it has any relevant and noticeable effects on playing a game that would require as much mental focus and dexterity as SC.
Does anyone have any first-hand experience with this? I've only taken such drugs for the sake of pulling through school-related things in clutch situations...
(...as you can see, it's not helping all that dramatically in focusing me on this essay...-____-;; )

A couple of the better players I know have used ritalin, adderall, or some other sort of speed to go from C+ level to B+ level permanently.

To OP: Can you explain exactly what happens when you take Adderall/Ritalin? I have never taken drugs on purpose without actually needing them, how does it improve thinking?
My brother did that to study for hours and hours without eating/sleeping, I thought it was amazing.

it's a stimulant. think of it being somewhere between coffee and cocaine. usually it's prescribed for people with focus issues in school or work but lots of other people will take it if they have to focus really hard for a few hours.

Ritalin is somewhere between coffee and cocaine. Adderall, is likely somewhere between cocaine and meth...
The effects are subtle, but very noticeable after the fact. It helps with focusing, as Tasteless said.
Like...it sort of just sharpens your mind. Your thinking becomes much more streamlined and efficient, and things sink in naturally. When you would have had to re-read a line several times to understand it, you'll get it in one go. Like...it just becomes easier to think things through.
It also helps indescribably with focus. Whatever you're reading or doing becomes the most interesting thing out there. Distractions still distract, though. Whatever distracts you will become your new object of focus, however, and you'll be just as into that as what you were previously; however, it is easy to bounce back between multiple objects of focus. For instance, if you're studying from a textbook, and someone comes and talks to you, your focus will shift from the textbook and onto the person and whatever you're talking about. However, once you're done, and you decide to go back to the textbook, you'll be able to jump in effectively right from where you left off previously. Your focus just bottom line becomes razor sharp.
It doesn't really grant anything magical, but it sort of just helps you maximize your cognitive abilities insofar as efficiency and effectiveness goes.
As far as your brother goes, yeah. I can definitely imagine that. The thing is you kind of lose appetite, and it's a stimulant, so it definitely will keep you awake as well. Don't take one if you want to sleep that night unless you take it early in the morning.

I used to take adderall so I could read faster, I read somewhere around a thousand words a minute (in a book , not computer screen) regularly after my speeding reading classes and lots of practice (compre around 80%) Well I almost closed in on 2 thousand words per minute for a 3 hour and a half period. I read over 35 books that month. I became grossly addicted and now 4 years later, I still have to drink between 2 and 8 cups of coffee a day to feel almost as awake as normal people. Burning out is a bad thing, fuck the retard who takes it one farther and uses speed aka adderal to play better broodwar ... wtf?

adderall is the miracle drug. if you do not have heavy ADD it lasts twelve hours and during that time you can get amazing amounts of stuff done without ever losing focus. it also forces you to do something or you will go crazy.. also you cannot possibly sleep until about ten hours after you take it. there is no comedown

hehe. I have to agree. Unless one has a starleague grand final on the line, I would definitely think it unwise to take any kind of prescription med so trivially. Long term use has been shown to cause dependency, so...yeah.
I posed the question out of a hypothetical curiosity. As much as I love SC, both the competitive pro scene and playing it myself, I really don't think it would be worth going through the hassle and pain in the wallet to continue to continually acquire some. It's not worth it when all I have on the line on iccup is my pride.

Adderall + SC is fun. I've taken Adderall and played SC a few times. It's pretty intense, you really get into the game and try like a mofo. APM is usually in my upper ranger if not +20 extra.

People with ADD or ADHD sometimes cut down on their dosages and sell some of their stuff is what i've heard. There are probably lots of other ways to get it too.

Edit: To those wondering where to get it, have a younger sibling with ADD. Personally, my girlfriend has ADD and takes Aderal as a prescription, I would never fuck around with it but thats just me. If you go to college you can probably find it relatively easily. Just ask around a little bit and I am sure you can find someone who is selling them.

I believe this has already been discussed several times..I do know everyone reacts differently to speed but in my case I can't sit behind a pc while "high" unless im high off pain/anxiety pills or THC...I really don't think it's much cheating b/c either way it comes back to the other player and the skills they have IMO. Well thats my .2 cents.

Got 2 friends with scripts that usually gives me em for free or for like a bit of weed. So pretty much free but i havnt done the stuff in like 7-8 months or so, great drug if not abused. Mix of coke and E, can get pretty intense and cause your eyes to shake if you take a little to much. You also wont sleep or eat that day.

To everyone who asked how to get it...I will be brief and ambiguous, as I don't know what TL's policies are concerning information on actually acquiring things illegally...
The only way in the US to legally acquire prescription meds such as Adderall or Ritalin is to get a prescription from a certified psychiatrist.
To obtain it any other way is illegal, and so would have to be acquired by the same means you would acquire any other controlled substance. I'll let you fill in the rest yourselves.

Just to clarify...there is no longer such a thing as ADD. Some time ago (I think it's been nearly ten years now), they combined ADD and ADHD into one disorder: ADHD. The acronym remains Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, but they have developed different variations of ADHD that you can be diagnosed with.
ADD no longer exists.

I played SC on acid once. I started the game just fine, it felt like everything was coming together perfectly and I was going to win. Then all of the sudden he attacks me and I notice I have gone 3 gate goon against a Zerg... I also like to play Terran when i am really really stoned, I just wall in and build wraiths or some cheesy shit.

This raises an interesting question, do KeSPA have rules against Adderall and even caffeine? Sometimes after drinking coca cola I can play a bit faster and react quicker (mainly for counter strike before a clan war) lol. anyone got any ideas?

I've taken a bit of adderall over these last 2 and a 1/2 weeks to do papers and while I really only played once while on it (cuz i was writing papers for like 12 hours straight the other times ;p) and everything was much easier to manage. Base macro was better and my brain would plan things out in advance in greater detail.

well being a premed student i can give you the breakdown:
Basically you can think of any of these two drugs as a stimulant. Basically the active chemical in both of these drugs is some type of amphetamine salts. If your thinking meth then yes, it is in a way like meth, or cocaine.
Amphetamines increase your metabolism, this is why in the 1950's it was prescribed as a weight loss supplement.
What really is attractive to gamers that this drug can provide is this: Norepinephrine
In short Norepinephrine will help to simulate a "fight or flight" response in the body. Adrenalin kicks in, higher pulse, quicker reaction time, higher BP Temp, ext. (basically an increase in your metabolism)
I have taken adderal when i used to play halo 2 competitively. Because of your increased metabolism, your body is running at full peak. Sniping was hilariously easy, and i would always get first shot.
However, because of my use for about 4+ years i am now a chronic insomniac. Also (although this may or may not be related) i have jaundice in my eyes, and unless i stay really really hydrated, it can be rather noticeable. From what i understand it is an imbalance of a few enzymes and a slight buildup of bile in my liver. Nothing live threatening of course, but meh.
As for side effects:
Basically when you take adderal or for that matter any stimulant your brain makes a TON of serotonin and dopamine. These two "chemicals" are the feel good, alert, happy ext. type of chemicals that your brain produces.
Study's show that after long term use, dependence is possible. After a time your brain can literally stop making serotonin and dopamine. This can cause radical mood swings, and generally can make you very unstable (mentaly).
Kidney failure is possible. If that happens to you, well lets just say that your chance of living is rather slim.

* Difficulty falling asleep[6]

* Extreme Irritability[6]
* Extreme Mood Swings[6]

Also the above. Notice that all of the mood disorders are related to the lack of serotonin and dopamine production of the brain.
So really taking stimulants while enhancing performance, could lead you to (a few years down the road) becoming rather unstable, (mentally)

Drugs are banned from mainstream sports not because they give you an "unfair" advantage but because they cause you bodily harm and no respected organization would allow it. To allow it would be to endorse self mutilation in order to get ahead. If there is no bodily harm associated with the drug in discussion then there is no reason for any organization to ban their use. The idea is the same as not all diets are equal. The Vegans could argue that the meat eaters have an unfair adv in football, it makes them strong, faster, more agile and their brain functions better; therefore ban meat eating from football. That example is absurd and so would banning any substance that benefits ones wellbeing.

What he didn't add is if you DON'T have ADD/ADHD it works as speed does on a normal person. In other words, without the actual disorder you're just getting a huge energy boost. There are so many people that pop Adderal before football games or any other sporting event simply to get the rush.

I'm sure adderal helps to play on low dosage. Still it has side effects just like any other amphetamines, so if your goal is to permanently improve your focus you should try meditation. It's a lot healthier and your not dependent on some drug

Somehow I'm having a comedown from the adderall...I took a pill and a half last night, didn't sleep for 36+ hours, and I havent eaten anything for more than 30 hours...
After a while, I started feeling neurotic with the lack of sleep compounding with the stimulating effects.
I'm gonna avoid that shit until my next set of finals...-____-;;

Beta blockers are banned in chess and bridge. Go is not with the wada, I think. I bet poker also has no doping regulations. Donno about ritalin and adderall. But I also remember if you drink too much coffee you can test positive on caffeine. No red bull and stuff. (edit: WADA removed caffeine in 2004)
I know musicians sometimes take beta blockers for nerves. It's apparently wide spread among symphony orchestras and the solists.
If you don't ban and enforce this stuff you give people who sacrifice their health by using medicine an advantage. And if you ban it it's just cheating on top of that.
