I pulled this review from one of the major AoE3 competitive clans. One of the players was at WWI, played it [loved it], and apparently talked to some blizz staff.
So basically, about half a year at least until beta (which matches up with what we know already - that it will take until Dec until single player is more hammered out).
Warcraft 3 beta was in 02/02 and released 07/02. That's like 5 months, or another half year. I'm not sure that SC2 will go through as many revisions as WC3 (since tons of stuff got overhauled in terms of fundamental gameplay), so I would guess a bit shorter for SC2 beta.
Basically, what seems plausible is a summer (06,07) 2009 release. In fact, the dates almost seem to match up with WC3's - 02/09 seems reasonable given the 6 months from now. More importantly, it means we get to wait until next year to build our new computers - lots of the new chips will be out by then .

I think beta and such will be several months longer than WC3. Simply because the game is more complex what with cliff walking, more game features and such.

In my defense, this isn't just pure speculation. Someone actually talked to the staff.
It's not just me asking people what they think the date should be. I thought it was some tidbit of information worth posting.
I've been here a while, and I've read through the guidelines, and I thought there was enough grounding in this for someone to read. I don't see how a thread with some information is worse than the other trash in this forum. It's not flamebait or theorycraft - someone might actually benefit from knowing some more info.

I'm fine with closing this thread, but hey it could be relevant information. And that's certainly more than can be said of the rest of the stuff that goes on in this forum.

Nothing about this thread is relevant information. All the rumours about releasedates has come from a "Blizzard staff" or from a "Insider" etc. Yours is no different. Blizzard doesn't care about dates when they release games. Warcraft3 was delayed by 3 years. Does that sound like a company that even remotley cares about holding release dates?
The closest of release date that actually is true at this point is that it will come not before 2008. a 2009 release isn't certain either. It might get delayed another year. And just a year delay would actually be good coming from Blizzard if you look at previous game releases.
|
Warcraft 3 was delayed because they completely redid the game (complete overhaul before the beta: RPG->RTS, and a lot during the beta).
The vision for SC2 is a lot clearer, and they aren't just going to throw everything away as they did before.
If this is speculation, it is no more so than what you have speculated about Blizzard's intentions.

What exactly in my statement about Blizzard were speculation. That Sc2 won't be released until after 2008. Or that Blizzard doesn't care about release dates? Those were the arguments I used that was about Blizzard.

I don't care about release dates. I just want another perfect game when it's released. It could be in 2010 or 2011.. doesn't matter to me.

It's not even that. The guy heard from a "blizzard staff" that the beta of sc2 would take around 2-5 months. Nowhere does it say when the game itself actually will go into beta or when it will be released.
Basicly The OP of this thread found info about how long the beta probably would take and in that moment God struck his head with lighting which also gave him the connection between the Beta info and when the game actually was suppose to come out. Frankly I fail to see how information about that Beta will be 2-5 months equals that it will be out summer 2009.

Blizzard said it won't be release this year and that it won't be as long to be release as their previous games. 2009 sounds definate. Just what month is it in 2009?

Your friend's friend gave an estimate on a beta release. Although that's just fantastic, it's largely meaningless to the rest of us.

Yeah, but naventus has given us reliable information before and we knew he was connected to Blizzard previously. If anyone has a true "friend who works for Blizzard" it's him.

Sorry, I didn't realize he had a background with this. Carry on!

Anyway, because I'm personally just dying to play the beta I enjoy these speculation threads.. Although I'd have prefered it if your info said "beta in 2 months" so I could have a 2 month long version of december (from a 5 year olds perspective).
;P
EDIT: Although after reading the actual article - wow that was pretty sparse :[ Wish there was a little bit more to go on than "he said"..

Thanks for the support , but I don't want to waste goodwill. A long time ago, I made a post about a friend who was connected to people in LA that worked in the games industry. He said that at that time, Blizzard was gobbling up lots of hires - and was in fact working on SC2 and D3.
I actually don't anything about the person from this post - I was just scouring the internet and found this. It was my judgment that it seemed reasonable and sound, and more definitive than a lot of stuff we've talked about so I threw it on here.
Like I said, I have no problem with you guys closing this thread. Hopefully anyone that wants to see it will have seen it by now. Personally I find this information important, because it will help me to strategize when to buy the parts/build a new machine.
