Hello- I mainly play protoss- And I find myself constantley not able to do what I want fast enoughf.
I try drilling mouse speed and acuracy by playing a custom map that only has 4 min right against the Nexus- And I just practice telling em to mine and do that over and over
i use the f keys and the 1-9 and the letters as quick commands
but are there any more drills to increase speed- and are there any more hotkeys that I'm missing- or anyway to reprograhm the keyboard?
In reps the gosu players' left hand seems to stay over the (ert-sdfg-cv)keys- That would be allot easier than trying to press 1 twice to look at my zealots then 0 twice to look at my nexus area.
any ideas? O_O

I use 1-3 for troops, 4 for special units like DA's and stormers, 5 for my main nexus, 6 for my 2nd expo, 7 for my first expo, 8 for my shuttle, 9 for my robo, and 0 for my obs.
When I need to macro I press f2 for my gates, f3 for my choke, and f4 for where my opponents shit mainly is (like where the terran is pushing)

use the fork to slowly cut 1/3 of your keyboard (use napkins for juice) at a time, then eat.
edit to contribute: There is no real shortcut, you just have to play a ton of games. As long as you are using your hotkeys you will gradually get faster.

Yeah well just remember to use hotkey and somewhat spam with your mouse so you're 'warm', how much you're apm usually is? Cause obviously apm isn't any key to success. Usually you just need to play more, too much hotkey spamming just distracts you, apm will increase as your skill does, if it's like below 100 at least.

Anyways, spamming every now in then really does help you get used to hotkeys. Also, I used to just think this was a myth, but watching first person vods is amazing inspiration to try to be asian

Your APM will increase overtime, as more and more you play. You could also take the faster method and apply the APM Creme.

Just follow your heart. that's what i do. whenever you aren't doing anything, press down your 0 key and keep it pressed. it'll put your APM at 400 for a few seconds here and there, which will increase your average by a lot.

There is no point in trying to increase your APM when your hand is slow in the first place. First concentrate on becoming better, then increasing handspeed. If you just try increasing handspeed, then you'll suck. Period.

You shouldn't aspire to having high APM. It should be something that comes to you as a biproduct of practice. Play at a speed you're comfortable with to maximize efficency.
Most people with high APM spend 50% or more of it on hotkeys, so to answer your question you can have faster APM by spamming them more. This may seem childish... probably because it is. Not to mention you're wasting time by doing it.
Asians have smaller penises than americans so they feel the need to compensate by spamming their hotkeys more. Kind of like how rednecks with small penises always drive the biggest trucks. Next time you play some 300+ korean on pgtour check his APM distribution. Don't feel intimidated

Think of the bos' you are used to do , now think of a kind of routine at least at the beginning , and then tell you 'what should I do next or now' and do it faster. Try not to separate unit management from macro except when you need to intense micro (my #1 failing and I'm certainly not the only one in that case). Last but not least : try to have the highest effective apm when you think you are 'dominating'/not engaged in a fight because 1) when under pressure I usually go faster whereas when 'dominating' some people, including me, have a tendency to slow down (10 effective apms 'lost' is already something), 2) if you're fast enough in these not-so-intense moments you'll be faster in the most important as a result me thinks. Shit theory but that is a kind of challenge to oneself that I think is not uninteresting.

Your simple lack of any one or more of the basics will cause you to lose, APM is much less deciding factor than say your macro or micro. If you actually concentrate on playing solidly with al the basics in mind in every game, your apm will be forced to rise.
However, if you are not wanting more apm because of this reason, and simply because to look cool, then I can say IMO thats pretty pathetic.

I have no idea what my apm is but just find that sometimes I have 12 gatesways and can only keep half of them working, minerals are climbing while im trying to scout, defend and attack
Last night my interenet speed was a little down - giving me confidence that I could be as fast as I need to be- And I beat this korean dude that has a 50% win ration on the asian server >_<

Here are 2 examples how I got really big APM. You will find them really usefull and will probably increase not only your APM, but your winning percentage a lot, too.
Example 1: I made a 4 pool and hotkeyed my hatch with 4 buttons and constantly pressed them. End result: WIN, 700+ APM.
Example 2: I made a 4 pool and kept Ctrl+1 pressed for the whole game. End result: WIN, 1500+ APM.

At least 90% of C+ minimum PGT players will need 140 apm (MINIMUM),especially T users, to reach their ranks . Oh yeah sure u can do 200 apm and be very weak ,but,

Apm is the sustent for the strategy. The more units u can command in the minimum time, the more chances u have to be succed on your strategy. Apm is an improvement for Strat. At least, that is how i see it. They are complementary.

That is a good point. The first time i saw boxer, grrrrrr, yellow, etc.. a few years ago, i was shocked to see them play. They looked just like epileptic ppl, the mouse frenzy was freaking awesome, but there was almost no use on selecting the same unit about 20 times in 3 secs (Particularily if is a worker that is minning). I've read a lot about some gosus hell-like Apm, but when i see live videos from theyr Apm, almost the 40% comes from Mouse spam =/. I belive that the term that must be used is "Multi Tasking" instead of Apm.
Anyway, back to the post.
I used to play games where u have to hit a certain key on the keyboard in a time lapse, so u would get used to the key positions, and hand movement across the keyboard.
Then i got used to acurracy with the mouse, so u can quickly pick any unit on the map. Some UMS on bnet are really good to improve accuracy.

How to improve APM (serious answer)
So over a summer i wanted to get faster and literally the ONLY way to do that is to FORCE yourself to play more quickly. Honestly, i highly recommend spamming hotkeys in mid/late game. For, although it is useless, it will help your brain get in the mindset of always needing to be doing something. Also, try to make boxes as fast as you can (ie WHIP your mouse baby) and also try to do little things very quickly in general. ie worker finishes at expansion and when you go there, try to select him and click on the minerals like ASAP.
The biggest factor which will cause you to play faster is simply remembering everything there is that's going on and trying to do all of it. However, that basically translates to "be a better player," and its impossible to just jump to that point. What will help in the "see new things to do" department is to ALWAYS be looking at the minimap. Whenever you are macroing, try to be glancing at the minimap and you will naturally remember stuff that needs to be done. The only thing you'll need to remind yourself to do is to macro. So
1) spam hotkeys
2) whip your mouse
3) look at minimap
4) remember to macro
as time passes on, you will be doing significantly less spamming of hotkeys and will simply remember everything that needs to be done and you'll naturally do it quickly

Oh, and i strongly disagree with people who say "APM is something that comes naturally with improvement." APM is something that needs specific work in itself. One MUST sit down and say "i will try to play as fast as i can this game" in order to improve APM.
That's how you have fast newbies and slow gosus as well as slow newbies and fast gosus. Some people just choose to work on speed and others don't.
I'm glad someone is genuinely asking how to improve APM. People tend to think its pointless because high APM comes off as "trying to look flashy." However, its a vital skill to becoming a good player so others should have more respect for those trying to improve this aspect of their game.

Sorry last thing:
Try to have a very efficient hotkey setup. I read that you were having trouble w/ 12 or so gateways. I recommend hotkeying 1 gateway or the 1 pylon supporting the gateways to 5 or 6 or something. Then hit 55 and simply click build everything (click Z click Z click Z click D click D etc etc to make stuff) I know that's how reach builds things in late game
So, you don't HAVE to do everything off hotkeys, but sometimes things work well. I'm a zerg user and i have 5-0 as hatcheries (sometimes 0 are scourge/defilers or something) and 1-4 as units. I'm EXTREMELY used to spamming 5sz6sz7sz8sz9sh0sh but that took time. Also, since i only have 48 units hotkeyed, i bunch the rest of my units in groups of 12 in a concave in the middle of the map. That way, when i need to attack I can click move those 12 groups easily and then control the 1-4 groups nicely.
For protoss I use: 1-4 as units 0-8 as nexuses (nice to be able to go 0p9p8p) and 5-7 as gateways/other critical buildings and I macro as i said above. Although I don't play protoss frequently, this hotkey setup makes sense to be able to play quickly and still control my units well.

You captilizae your "must" as if it is defininte and that it is the same for everyone. This is clearly not true. There are many people like me who were surprised to find their apm went up without them even knowing. This was caused by the increasingly improving play which demanded for higher apm. There are alot of cases where your apm will just naturally go up. Don't just dismiss it by saying that everyone "MUST" increase apm by focusing on it only.

I still beleive my statement is correct, but let me clarify a bit.
I'm talking about cases where someone w/ 180-200~ APM is trying to increase up to 300~ APM. I literally don't know of any good 300 APM player who slowly got there. Virtually any quick player I know peaked it up in a small period of time and then figure out how to make it useful.
I agree that it will naturally increase, but I feel as though the highest APM one can reach naturally is 180-200. Past that requires lots of practice. So, i'm not trying to say that its impossible to build APM naturally, that's definitely true. However, its only true up to a certain point. To get past the 200 range, i feel one MUST focus on APM and practice quick hand speed.

Yeah my APM is pretty much locked at 220+ now (I do have games where I'm hitting 250 - 280, but I've only hit 300+ once in a real game). Its all about the hotkeys baby.
Scrolling around the map is going to make your actions drop, if you can use the hotkeys to just to what you want to use at the current time, just click it twice and jump to it! And if you need to go to a spot, quickly go to the minimap and click on wherever. Another thing is that you should max out your mouse speed and get used to it. Once you do you'll be able to select/move/attack things faster. It will hurt your accuracy for a bit but once that catches up you'll be fine.
Also, learn how to click faster. Instead of just clicking fast to increase your APM, however, do it to more precisely have your units go to a spot. Make your actions useful while your increasing them. And never lose track of whats happening in the game. Work your strategy but never forget to adapt to what your opponent is doing.

Practicing against a computer while trying to keep minerals below 300 at all times and APM above 300 at all times is supposed to help. These goals are very difficult to reach though. I have found that simply focusing on APM in games has slowly increased my APM from 50 to around 140 on average.

apm is not the same as decision making : ), the best way to increase the apm and keep the decision making is to mix some valium in the coffee.
