supply side is larger portion of the price drop according to imf at least. saudis can control price expectation by stating that they will fill in the supply gap when and if other producers cut their own production, making cutting supply useless. cartel etc

Sony Pictures has decided to cancel the Dec. 25 release of "The Interview" after major theaters said they wouldn't screen the movie.

"We have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release of 'The Interview,'" the company said in a statement.

Top movie theater chains in the US decided not to show "The Interview" after threats by hackers who have attacked Sony Pictures over the movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

You guys think this qualifies as a cyber terrorist attack? I mean the 'point' of terrorism is to make fear force people to change the way they live. Seems like this fits directly into that?

Cyber terrorist threat, not attack in this case but yes it qualifies as that.

Well if the threat gets the desired results isn't that effectually an attack? Plus they did already release some of the information (kinda like killing the first hostage). Obviously not trying to equate information to human life, but I think the point is clear.

Gotta wonder what kind of bad things Sony has hidden to actually listen to the threats. I doubt the "9/11 style threats" that the news networks got actually would happen. We have no reason to believe these guys have that kind of power anyway.

I mean, calling them cyber terrorists is a bit of a stretch to begin with, giving all they've accomplished so far is a result of phishing.

It's a weird situation now. Does this mean that they could insist Sony produce movies that portray North Korea favorably? I don't think they'd give in unless they realized "This is 100% hopeless. There's no way we can defend ourselves". So North Korea is able to threaten multinational companies into submission? wtf? Obviously this can't be allowed to continue, but how in the hell could we really prevent this from happening again?

Team America: World Police has been out forever. Sony is a cowardly joke of a company, cutting its losses.
The unrealistic sound of these propositions is indicative, not of their utopian character, but of the strength of the forces which prevent their realization.

What a shameful day for America, bowing to terrorists. And also a dangerous precedent, Islamists are now going to shift from ineffective kinetic attacks to apparently super effective software attacks. Once they hack into Netflix and steal the next season of House of Cards whats going to happen, America withdraws from Saudi Arabia or the entire Middle East? Shameful.

And now telling how much damage Putin is going to manage to inflect on America now that he realizes how decadent and weak Americans can be.

I'm unclear how seperate Sony in America and Sony in Japan are. I'm not sure this is a decision that could of been made by Americans alone.

As for the theatres most people probably don't know but AMC theatres (one of the main ones that said they wouldn't be showing the movie) is actually owned by the Chinese so it's no surprise they said they didn't want to run it.

I think people mad at the un-Americanness of choosing not to show the movie should probably be focused on Regal an Amy E. Miles. And the smaller american owned chains that also decided not to release as planned.

Sounds like the movie is still going to come out eventually (give some time to check the credibility of threats of killings), so provided it does (not counting the inevitable leaks) I don't think to big a blow is struck to America specifically but Japan has "got some splainin' to do".

However unlikely, there's always a chance their most recent test screenings found the movie was just gonna be so bad it wouldn't be worth showing and they'd rather fill the screens with something else.

Of note, ads often show some of the best parts of a movie to entice people to come; I don't think I laughed at any of the jokes in the ad; and while it's a little outside my taste, I tend to enjoy pretty much everything.

No one wanted to see this movie before this happened. Now everyone wants to see it. Huge commercial boon.

There's no doubt that it looked like it was gonna be really, really bad. However, I think Seth Rogan is just awful and ruins movies, so that might just be me. However, this movie did look particularly terrible. It'd be hilarious if this was Sony capitalizing on the hacking to say they had to cancel the movie.

Well apparently it's not just Sony.

New Regency announced that its new movie based in North Korea is also cancelled.

The thriller film, which was set to star Steve Carell and be directed by Gore Verbinski, would have been titled "Pyongyang." The plot involved a Westerner recounting his experiences of working in North Korea for a year.

The film, written by Steve Conrad, would have been based on Guy Delisle's graphic novel of the same name.

Source

Pretty sure Fox has a 20% stake in New Regency for what that's worth.

New Regency — in which News Corp. owns a 20% stake — has co-financed about three-quarters of the movies it has made, while Fox fully financed the balance.

Source

Come on New Regency and NewsCorp.!?! I mean Rupert Murdoch is really going to let this happen?

I'm sure Fox News just missed that New Regency and Rupert did the same thing...

I still feel like no one is paying proper respect to the fact that North Korea is controlling corporations. This is a really big deal and it feels like everyone is shrugging it off.

Considering how hard corporations fight regulations and whatnot, it feels like this is just...not a big deal. I don't understand lol

It's interesting in how they are controlling them. I don't think it's generic personal information that has these corps scared. Or the unsubstantiated threats of violence.

What these corporations are terrified of is people being clued into the kind of stuff they say when they think they are 'in private'.

People in general aren't scared, so they will pressure the companies to release the films anyway, when they can't because that's not what they are scared of, it will expose the real reasons they are bowing down to some cyber terrorists.
