There is a great distinction between Korean and American competitive scenes.

While playing game professionaly might be better off in korea interms of money, its completely different story for Americans.

Few reasons why progaming is good in Korea.

Prizes are equivalent of working full 3~4 years or even more.. (GSL $85,000).
Note that minimum wage in Korea is around $6 dollars (Canadian) $4 dollars (US) . (Students)

1) They dont have to study 20 hours a day trying to get into one of 3 universities where they only allow 1000 students. (More than 250,000 students for competition)

2) Very difficult to get a job in Korea. I heard competition is something like 1000:1 for a dishwasher or cashier... (minimum wage $4 US)

3) Gaming is Korea's culture, everyone does it, everyones good at it, why not persue ?

Here are few reasons why gaming is not good in America

1) You make more money working, plenty of job oppertunities, higher minimum wage. ($7.5 US)

2) Many want to achieve "American Dream", make $200,000 per year. go vacation, relax during weekends. (Cant do this while progamming, need proper education and suitable job)

3) Dream vs Reality.
Many americans like gaming, but that itself does not gurantee them into the pro scene.
Staying on top of the proscene requires tremendous work and will often result in various sacraifces in your life. Reality may not be as easy as it seems.
Unless you are willing to sarcrafice significant part of your current life, being a progamer will not be a great turnout for you.
Reality is harsh, losing a tournament can greatly set you back.

Minimum wage of $9.5-10? Try $7.25
1000:1 for a "scrap" job? Just about every single number in your post is grossly over exaggerated. The point is fairly correct, but c'mon

Quit making up numbers...

I just want to point out that this estimate is VERY high. It's something like $7.00 where I live in CO.

Otherwise I suppose your post is true, although it's just like trying to become a professional athlete in that most people won't make it if they try, therefore most don't want to after the age of 10.
Hey.

JrK, you think pro scene in Korea was just a coincidence?
And yes 1000:1 for a scrap job is correct, ( I know because i have friends in Korea)
and $9.5 in Canada where i live right now.

Stop trolling, you failed.

Lol 99.9% unemployment. Yeah I'm sure that's the case.

You should do some real research and then come back and post a comprehensive and informative thread on this topic. That would probably make for a very interesting thread.
I like the way the walls go out. Gives you an open feeling. Firefly's a good design. People don't appreciate the substance of things. Objects in space. People miss out on what's solid.

What a bunch of crap you are posting. If you want to throw out numbers at least quote your references, I suspect you only reference is your ass, where you pulled the data from.
