Calling all of Teamliquid's medical experts

I recently got a lump underneath my left armpit or rather right below the armpit area it bulges out a little bit and is rather painful. Does anyone know what this might be and would I have to go see a doctor about this?

And this is rather close to my deployment as well so im a little worried about this.

Ask any question for more information i guess ill be checking this for the next hour or so

If you're in the military isn't there a doctor on base or whatever that you can go see? That would be my advice anyway, better safe than sorry.

It's most likely a boil or a lymph node.

if it hurts and you have no clue as to what could have caused it, you need to take it to the doctor asap. hurt = really bad.

how long did it take for that thing to develop? did it grow slowly over the past month or did it just pop up over the last nights sleep? "recently" isnt that precise of a statement ;p

Ok guys, if you have a lump in your armpit, please go to your doctor and get it checked out. It could be as simple as a sebaceous cyst (blocked sweat gland, common in the armpit), a lipoma (fatty benign tumor), or an enlarged lymph node. Enlarged lymph nodes could be the result of a local or systemic infection (nothing to worry about, will go away), or could be metastatic cancer or lymphoma. Depending on your ages, I would particularly be concerned about hodgkin's lymphoma or breast cancer. Check your neck, other armpit, and groin for any additional enlarged nodes, and perform a breast self exam (yes, even if you're a guy). While it is likely a completely benign condition, such as a sebaceous cyst, please get it looked at. I am a general surgery resident, and we recently operated on a 25-yo man with breast cancer and enlarged axillary lymph nodes.

Got this info from a health forum.

recently it appeared a 1-2 days ago overnight, or at least i didnt even see it. and on a scale of 1-10 of pain its probably like 3-4 just an annoying pain when in certain positions

Definitely see a doctor, but it's more likely an infection. Are you feeling sick otherwise?

I have a buddy who had a lump under his armpit and it turned out to be an STD. This is one dude and one story, but an STD is a lot better than some of the alternatives! Any unprotected sex?

The sex was with me and only me. I was also a virgin until him and we've done it a number of times over the past 6 months. I'm clean. So I don't think its an STD. Could it be a calcium deposit? I've read that they occur in the armpit sometimes and will cause slight pain if you move your arm.

It definitely COULD be dangerous, so no matter what the likely cause is you need to go see a doctor.

If it's on the surface, might be an ingrown hair. I just had one of those and it sounds similar to what you describe.

Do you work out? Does the muscle under your arm hurt?

If yes, it could be a sprain. I had it too a couple of months ago and I was freaking out thinking it was cancer... Apparently it was a muscle lol :p

If it's a boil, it'll go away.
If it's an enlarged lymph node, it will persist, and then you should consider getting it checked out.
If it's an inflamed enlarged lymph node - you'll either get sick, or it'll go away. If you get sick you'll go to the doctor. The fact that it's painful and new suggests an inflammatory cause.
If it's not a lymph node - then I don't really know what it could be without seeing it. Lipoma is unlikely.

If it's truly in the axilla, there's very few things it could be. If you're like DwmC_Foefen, who sounds like he just discovered his pectoralis muscle, then

Oh, and just FYI and IMO:

In the absence of other significant clinical symptoms and signs, your GP will either:
1. Watch and wait.
2. Prescribe you antibiotics empirically (if he/she is a chicken, or has other reasons to do so)
3. Refer you to for an USS. Again he'd need a good clinical indication for this.

add: take my advice at your own risk!

its a bump that can be moved around, right below the armpit region under the skin the size of a pea maybe a tiny bit bigger then one

to give a general inclination of what it looks like

but i guess if its pain and inflammatory should i just ice it for a day?

There are some other valid points in this thread. I'm too lazy to cover them all.

The fact that its mobile and at least subcutaneous means that its more likely to be a lymph node. In a young and otherwise normally well person this can be due to spread of infection; most likely from the ipsilateral limb (your arm on the same side). You can look for cuts and wounds which might support this finding.

I don't see how icing it would hurt, though I suspect it wouldn't do much.

Give it a few days and see how things progress. You won't lose much in doing so, and if you need to have something done, it will become apparent to you.

Dude I have some kind of lump in my ear lobe. It doesn't hurt when I leave it alone but it's pretty tender. It seems to be getting smaller though so I'm just leaving it alone for now...

what it could be
1) lymph node
2) blister
3) boil
4) genetic mutation
5) pimple
6) trapped air under a healed cut
7) shrapnel, object
what to do
1) dunno
2) do not pick at it, then it will pop. if it pops, exploding with blister fluid, then don't remove the blister skin, it acts as a natural bandage.
3) clean the area regularly
4) go see a doctor
5) apply acne cream and rinse area with clean water
6) see a doctor if it continues to be painful
7) see a doctor or surgeon

When I had this happen I had these bumps appear on the sides of my neck and along my hip > groin area as well. It was my lymphatic system filling up with crap because I had mono. Go get checked out by a doc

Edit: next > neck

it could be gynecomastia, which in extreme cases is like male breasts, but in most people it's just a bumpy thing under the skin anywhere from the chest to the arm pit and it hurts and is irritating. On top of all the other things that have been suggested

always do see a doctor though!

it hurting is GOOD thing, means it's not cancer

I had the exact thing happen to me back in college. And it really freaked my out. Turned out it was an ingrown hair that grew into a cyst. Had it removed surgically no big deal.

Changes are its nothing major at all... so dont worry... but get it checked out.

Aren't most STDs localized to specific areas? What STD affects the armpit?

First thing that I pictured was like a self breast exam where they're feeling for lumps on their tits, but instead reach over under their armpit

YOU SIR HAVE CANCER

just kidding, i'm not an expert, go get it checked out bruh.

if it makes you feel any better

one of my family members has one of those when she reached middle age. The doctor said it was nothing to worry about, its rather benign. and they are now living with it for like...10 years and nothing life altering happened.
