As security guards they're not supposed to do anything. The security company that contracts you tells you multiple times to do nothing and that you're just there to observe. I still wouldn't have just stood by though, grow some balls nubs.

this really is retarded, it doesnt even matter if they are security guards or not. if you see someone on the ground getting their head fucking stomped on, go do something about it. don't just stand there and watch, break it up and help the person that's getting the stuffing beat out of them. law or not who gives a fuck, someone's personal health and safety is more important

These situations are extremely fucked up. What's even worse, if those guards intervened the attackers could probably sue the metro station for lots of money. What an easy job. Wake up, put on a vest, and stand around a metro station all day for the illusion of security.

Speaking as someone with an unarmed security job, intervening when that's expressly forbidden by policy will cost you your job and possibly your license. Intervening even when it is your job to do so (as it seems to have been here) opens both you and your company to all sorts of lawsuits, and so you have to be very careful about it. Since the license requirements for security work (at least in California) don't actually include training on how to subdue a suspect without injuring them permanently, I can see why someone who doesn't know that would be hesitant to intervene even if permitted by policy, especially with a female minor. Personally, I do know how to do that, and would have done something, but the vast majority of my coworkers don't. Hell, I'm not sure some of them would able to restrain a reasonably tough 15 year old girl, let alone two with eight guys (assuming the others would have interfered)! It's not exactly a very selective job (which is probably why I'm employed right now).

Of course, if I wasn't an employed security guard at the place it happened, I would have broken that shit up even faster, if only to teach them both how to fucking punch. Disgraceful.

I like how everybody in this thread thinks that they would be a super-intervener and all, but if they were there, they would most likely not do shit.

Several factors:

bystander effect: the more people there are (especially police /law enforcement) that don't do anything, other bystanders feel like they aren't as "responsible" and that someone will do something. When somebody does do something, they will jump in as though they were planning to the entire time. Kitty Genovese case

second: the fact that there are six black people bashing another person is more than likely to scare most bystanders, even self-righteous TLers, from intervening, and as before, especially if law enforcement / authority figures don't do anything themselves.

there are more, but those are several of the biggest. I would also like to believe that I would help the person getting curbstomped, but science and psychology say otherwise

on topic, that policy is pretty weak. Are they afraid that the metro guards will abuse their powers? Like as if that'd be any different from regular po-po

If the guards would have done something they would have got sued. We live in a modern world where if you do anything you get sued, fired, kicked out of school etc etc. My highschool would suspend students who obviously were only fighting to defend themselves when it was on camera. Kid got jumped and all he did was push the attacker over and he got suspended for participating in a fight lol.

Also, wonder if they would have broken up white people.
