With the Grand Finals 🏁 of #KSL Season 1 on the horizon, Season 2 has been announced! 📣

Register for KSL Season 2 Beginning September 17

Season 2 of the KSL sponsored by K-STAR GROUP is coming up, and interested players can register to compete beginning September 17. After signing up, players need to make sure they’re available to play in the qualifiers on September 27 & 28 (online) and September 30 (offline).

The top four finishers from the first season of KSL will automatically be seeded into the Round of 16 for Season 2. This means fans can see favorites like Yoon Jong Jung, Jae Dong Lee, Min Chul Kim, and Sung Hyun Kim in the next season without watching them sweat through the qualifying process

The remaining 12 players will be determined by the Season 2 Offline Qualifier. From there, it’ll be a ferocious fight to the finish for the second KSL championship.

The matches for the Round of 16 through the quarterfinals will take place in Jade Hall (12th floor, Hyundai Department Store - Sinchon Branch) and fans are invited to watch the action live and in-person. The final for Season 2 will be held in mid-December.

The KSL will broadcast live through the official StarCraft Twitch channel in Korean (http://www.twitch.tv/starcraft_kr) and English (http://www.twitch.tv/starcraft).

The milestones for the KSL Season 2 are as follows:

Application Submission for Competition: Sep 17 - Sep 23
Online Qualifier:Sep 27 and 28
Offline Qualifier: Sep 30
Group Stage for Round of 16: Oct 18 – Nov 23
Quarter Final: Nov 29 and 30
Semi Final: Dec 6 and 7
Final: Mid-December (TBA)

Again 2 days between online and offline, no chance again for any foreigner living outside korea? Anyways its a great news for BW :D

it's not going to clash with the ASL. KSL is thursday + friday. ASL is (mostly) sunday + tuesday.

I liked it when Flash came on stage after his last ASL victory and stated "my life doesn't make any sense if I don't compete". That's a very earnest statement, and it definitely doesn't sound like he's going to be giving anything away to anyone. He's of course by far the most favored to win both this and ASL 6. But there is a handful who can threaten him: Rain, Snow, Jaedong, Larva.
This is my signature. I love that I can have a signature here. I haven't had a signature since like 2008. It reminds me of the old internet. I wish I knew what to put here though.

Hi!

This may be a really dull question but do you think if that's okay if a really amateur player registers for KSL (currently I'm a D level player, and started playing ranked games a few weeks back)? I know I'm going to be beaten but when Artosis said during a commentary that he encourages people to register it seemed a great thing to me. I can't really find any tournaments anyway so I thought why not? At least I could see what it's like from close.
Or I shouldn't bother them with my skill level?

What is your opinion about this? (please don't make bad remarks regarding my skill, I haven't played too much 8) )

Thanks!

Honestly - no, you should not register if you're D rank. Even A rank and low-mid S rank people have no chance...

Also, there's other stipulations, such as you should be able to achieve TR20 or higher in games, and I believe one of the very early rounds is actually an event in Korea. So if you can't even travel to Korea, that's another reason not to join.

Agreed. If they want FS, bring back something else instead like Jade or La Mancha or Sniper Ridge. Make things more interesting.

You should absolutely sign up if you want to play, there's absolutely nothing to lose. If you're lucky, maybe you'll get a really gosu player round 1 and can look at those replays to see the difference of where you are now and where you want to be. Tasteless and Artosis casted a bunch of qualifier games from Season 1 and the skill levels were all over so don't feel like you'll be the only D level player there

Thanks for your replies!

Travelling to Korea is no problem because it's 100% I won't make it to that stage. :D
About TR20 it's another question. I've read that the online qualifiers are played on the Korea gateway. Is there any other thing I should change or set before I start playing there? Or how does that work? (if this should be discussed in another topic please tell me where)

But I think it will mostly be the same for season 2.

Guys, my gut feeling tells me that Flash is not participating in KSLs as they are organized by blizzard.
I think due to worsening of relationship between Afreeca CEO and Blizzard because of the ruined team league season 2. We know Flash is really close with Afreeca CEO and I believe he is just taking a side. I would love if Lemmata has insights and can confirm/deny that. Anyhow for sure Flash did not skip KSL1 just because of the Asian games, don't buy that.
It's about time.

flash didn't participate in ksl s1 because he had a prior commitment in china.
he showed his professionalism by sticking to his commitment rather than reneging on his promise.

please don't actually believe anything until a trusted source confirms/denies a players participation.
the blizzard-afreeca relationship speculation is complete bullshit. relations between the two couldn't be any more stronger.

on a more positive note, KSL Season 2 Map Updates!

GTR, so if that's the main reason for missing KSL1, Flash will be 99% playing in KSL2.

I personally don't think the current situation is as simple as that, there are other factors at play, some of which Flash has already mentioned on stream.

Flash has mentioned that it might be difficult for him to perform up to his own expectations in two separate tournaments simultaneously given the amount of toil his body has suffered thus far. It is the kind of attitude he has previously shown towards other tournaments, because like a boxing champion that wants to hold on his championship belt for the longest possible time, Flash does not want to tarnish his legacy by entering tournaments if he does not feel he can manage his time or condition properly.

There are also rumours of Jaedong giving up his seed for the second season of the KSL, perhaps due to similar reasons. These players are worn out after years of inhuman dedication towards a single craft, often at the cost of their personal health. Even Larva has forfeited his spot for ASL Season 6, and the dude is one of the youngest ex-professionals the current streaming scene has.

Now, I am entirely open to the assumption that these players are restrained by their obligations (contractual or otherwise) towards AfreecaTV, but it could also be that these players are just tired, and want to limit their ventures into the competitive realm at a bare minimum, so that their lives can be more leisurely and not entirely dedicated towards excellence.

It is their decision, and we can guess their true intentions all we want, but the fact of the matter is that there is more Brood War content due to the existence of the KSL, and more competitive Brood War is always good. Sometimes, player's health, personal drive, or contractual obligations does not allow them to match the increase in the opportunity given. That is definitely a shame, but it seems like for Flash at least, there are multiple factors at play.

I would love to see Andromeda in this era of Brood War!
I always remember Andromeda having epic macro games but I was fairly new to the game then so I don't know if I didn't realize some negative aspects of the map? Because we haven't seen it back.

Python and Longinus are a bit unbalanced maps that I feel are played out though.

Listen to GTR on this. Speculation does nothing for anyone. I'm so glad to see Blue Storm and Polaris Rhapsody out, though. There are better two-player maps.

Does anyone know if they will be streaming the online qualifiers again? The last time seemed hard on the casters so I would understand if they don't do it again.

I hope that's the real larva in the sign up list, his absence in the last ASL/KSL was a damn shame. The more spice this tournament has the better.

Online qualifiers are underway for more than 6 hours. Not exactly following the whole story; maybe they'll broadcast selected replays?

The Twitch official SC channel will stream the replays Live with casters (most likely Tastosis)

Since there has been no activity that says otherwise, I'd just assume that there was no stream/no vods now... Is that correct?

If you scroll up like 5 posts you can see PezRadar says "Should be starting around 8-9pm pacific time on the 28th and 29th from 6pm-7pm." So there will be a non-live cast tonight in about 8 hours from this post.

I've been watching on and off, I haven't seen any real notables qualify for offlines, JY made it through and Reach (that reach) is currently 1:0 and is looking like he'll make it.

Really enjoying the casting too, Rapid and Endinglife make a nice combo.

edit: Reach is through to offlines, smashed a PvP 2:0.

The korean version is already up: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/316060837

I'll probably make a SVT post with the English version casted by Rapid later, but it might take a while (the entire thing is more than 12 hours).

He's this guy > https://twitter.com/EndingL1fe Know nothing about him but his cast was really good, they did an bangup job still being coherent after 10+ hours of casting.

EDIT: Looks like it's Rapid and Wolf doing today's cast! Currently Action vs. Jy

Jaedong was a finalist in the last KSL, so he would have been seeded in the Ro16.

That was a regular-season worthy series. Great job by both, I never knew there were players in the expro, non-tournament regular pool who could play like Beast did.

12 nex got bunker rushed. In game 1, his proxy robo didn't do a ton of damage and eventually he got pushed by mech on FS close spawns.

Snow went 12 nexus so JyJ just bunker rushes him and kills the nexus while getting a cc of his own. Snow decides to go dts but it was pretty obvious from the lack of range so JyJ just builds a ton of turrets and easily takes no damage from the dts. I wondered why he didn't take a third and try to play it out with a soft contain with the dts though.

I think 12 Nex is just not a good strat when it's scouted that fast and the other player already does a somewhat offensive build (the rax below the ramp). Quite some bad luck in there too for Snow.

In the first game Jyj played well. In the second game Snow took a gamble and failed miserably. Strange that Snow didn't want to play standard in the second game. Does he still have a chance to qualify, or is Snow out of KSL2?

True. Losing the zeal to scv surround for practically nothing was on him though

jyj took a game off larva in groups so maybe he can surprise in ro16 again

Bo5 series makes it kinda hard for an upset to happen though. I do hope he'll at least make it to the deciding series.

Well yea, these things can happen though. I don't think it was that big a mistake. Shit happens sometimes. Don't know if it would have saved him either (if it didn't get trapped). Certainly would have helped a bit.

Snow out of both ASL and KSL; I hope this doesn't bring him down and he keeps on improving. Would be sad if his success in ASL proves to be a fluke. He is a formidable protoss.

Either way, I'm happy another terran qualified for the round of 16 ^^

JyJ had really good decision making in those 2 games, something that a lot of the other almost-qualifiers seemed to be lacking.

A bit sad beast couldn't make it, he's always desperately close to qualifying for the big tournaments, but I'm sure his time will come, and we probably didn't need another zerg

I unfortunately had to close to the stream when he was leading 2-1 in the finals I think?
How did he lose the other two games? Didn't really expect him to lose against Mini...

This is going to be such an odd tournament, it's full to bursting with players I thought I'd never see qualify and missing a heap of the big names I'm used to seeing in the ro16/ro8 of ASL. Nice to not just see the same faces playing over and over, it's going to make an interesting contrast with the ASL. I'm wondering if missing a few big names will affect viewer numbers, but what can you do?

I was interested today why Flash and JD did not want to participate, did not find anything of substance, and then after comment in ASL BR looked up KSL format.

BoX series with winner chooses the map AND 7 map map-pool? Yeah, this is the most retarded thing ever, and I am sure some imbecile at blizzard thinks that more the maps the better, the way they pushed it heavily in SC2, and now we get the same shit from I bet the same retard. THE FEWER THE MAPS THE BETTER THE GAMES HOW IS THAT SHIT HARD TO GRASP? WILL A PROGAMER COME WITH PREPARED STRATEGY FOR A MAP XxxxxX IF THERE IS A 4/7 CHACE IT WONT BE PLAYED? REALLY? I GUESS YOU COULD SAY HE CAN WIN 1 GAME THEN CHOOSE THE MAP BUT SERIOUSLY, TOURNAMENTS ARE NOT LADDER, BLIZZARD. FUCK YOU.

I will boycott KSL, fuck this.

Liquid'Nony's wise words on the topic of map pools from the time of 9 map mappools in SC2.

I think he meant that the many maps (as they are in SC2) are bothering the players. It's too tough on them to prepare good builds on many maps, you see. Which leads to overall lower quality of games. That the winner chooses next map also does not seem to help the competitive nature because winner can and usually chooses a map on which his race is favored to win thus making entertainment miserable compared to "loser chooses and maps are few" format.

More games the better, if it is unknown map, then it is the test of pure raw skill!

I can deal with no jd but no flash? Son... I am disappoint. Blizz should just put freakiling and str-8102 on like 20k a year salaries to make maps for these tours so the players and viewers don’t get bored. With all the $$ wasted on nincompoops like Dustin Browder is there no budget for professional map making? That would diminish format issues and disagreements about winner/loser map picker scenario us and motivate and excite the players too. https://pics.ballmemes.com/i-move-for-a-vote-of-no-confidence-28126099.png

I don't understand why Flash and Jaedong refuse to play, possible that Afreecatv is pressuring its biggest streamers not to participate with twitch streaming the event?

Possible. AfreecaTV is where they get their money (regular money).

That doesn't explain Effort missing it out. (Is he actually popular?)

Still I'm happy we have a decent 'alternative' cast in KSL. Should be fun, still plenty of great names in there.

So preparing one or two new maps for a new tournament is too much to expect nowadays (and maybe polish play on one or two more old ones that where also added new to the current ladder/tourney pool)? KSL uses the current ladder map pool on top of that, so that's two birds, one stone.
Compare that to the old Kespa days with two individual leagues and and a teamleague that would each introduce 3+ maps for every new season. Of course there's no hard-core secret team-house practice any more, but how many games do you actually need to get a feel for a new map (assuming it does not deviate too far from the usual variety of 4p macro maps)? The ability to adapt to new maps is one of the skills a good RTS player should have and its only good for BW as a spectators sport if some wonky games and crazy prepared strategies are strewn in between the usual series of long macro games and anti-climactic breaking strategies.

My 0.02$

Group A: 1st: Action, 2nd: Rain
Action is still a bit of a wildcard to me so I'm excited to see him in a bunch of Bo5s, I especially want to see his ZvT if the final match of the group is Action vs Light.

Group B: 1st: Mini, 2nd: Soulkey
I think anyone could potentially advance from this group but I'll give the edge to these two, Mind seems a bit off at the moment and Mini is playing very well

Group C: 1st: Larva, 2nd: Sharp
I have no idea what Jaehoon is going to look like, and Movie is good for one or two Hyuks a series

Group D: 1st: Last, 2nd: ... uh... JyJ? I guess
Last to steamroll everything in this group, and then the other 3 to fight for the scraps. Lot of unknowns in this group, I could see Leta getting that 2nd place too. For Modesty I think a Bo5 ZvT will be a big 'prove it' moment.

Just finished watching the qualifiers. Anyone else think that wasn't fair towards Snow at all? He had to play four Bo3s in a row with hardly in a breaks, whereas JyJ had a 5 hour break before his two games with Snow, just because he was on the lucky side of the bracket. Snow seemed really marked by fatigue in those last games.

Of course even under those circumstances, it takes a really strong terran player to defeat Snow, so he's probably not quite undeserving, but I can't help feeling it would have turned out differently if they had waited an hour before the final match to even the odds.

They take winning very seriously. I think if they feel they don’t have time to prepare properly then they don’t want to go into the tourney half baked. Disappointing for fans but understandable to them as competitors.

Not really, I'm leaning more towards AfreecaTV shielding their darlings rather then them 'not having enough time to prepare'. Cmon, they play BW all day and all these tourneys are on maps that have been played thousands of times.

Plus it's a Bo5. If you're good, that should give you plenty of confidence going into it.

It's a shame that we don't get the best of the best in the best format for BW.

Dude, I am very happy for you, for your map finally hit the ladder and mappool of such large tournament, but because of that retarded 7 mappool nobody will prepare for it, nobody will practice for it, and we are looking for all around bad games on it.
And after bad couple of games it will be rotated out. Mark my words.

Remember what happened when ASL S5 maps were introduced? Everyone and their mother on Afreeca ran to practice on them. EVERYBODY played on them all day every day. It would be the same if Eddy was a new map out of 4, maybe even 5, but now we see no sponmatches on it and progamers don't give a shit about it(Effort now knowing it any1?)

And the only one responsible for that is the tournament organizer, some retard at Blizzard, who ruined SC2 WoL and HotS scene beyond repair already, WHO CAN'T SEE THAT WE CAN DO BEST OF 7 ON 5 MAP MAPPOOL.

And don't give me that crap about kespa days, PL, MSL, OSL all had 4 map mappool, and in general they had 2-3 same maps! Total amount of maps at the 1 time frame was not 12, it was 6, 7 tops.

I am very sad you defend them, all you ppl defend some shit like "best player will win on a random map" and bullshit like that.
I watch SC to see GREAT GAMES, not BEST PLAYER WIN. This happens with balls-to-the-wall strats, crazy proxies, offensive nydii, unorthodox strats, that get the game out of "standard macro game" and then you truly see who's best.

And you seriouly think games like this ever happen while progamers play unprepared? We see time and time again, when progamers play on maps they didn't really prepare, they stay inside of their comfort zone and we get to see only one-sided macro engines rolling seemingly helpless players in an anticlimactic fasion.

And you of all people not realising how it hurts all your hard work and effort. Very sad.

two of the maps are FS and CB, no one needs to specifically prepare for these. So that leaves 5 maps.
Roadkill was used last season. Benzene, Aztec, HBR are all maps used formerly by Kespa, all of these are current ladder maps. And if you can look beyond the fancy look Eddy is actually a pretty straight forward macro map, so players will be perfectly content with the normal range of builds. All in all, even with a seven map pool, this does not seem like an insane amount of preparation.

Compare this to:
Remember what happened when ASL S5 maps were introduced? Everyone and their mother on Afreeca ran to practice on them. EVERYBODY played on them all day every day. It would be the same if Eddy was a new map out of 4, maybe even 5, but now we see no sponmatches on it and progamers don't give a shit about it(Effort now knowing it any1?)
The ASL5 map pool was total bullshit because they introduced three completely out-there maps as far as balance and playstyle go. two of them were types of island maps for which there literally does not even exist any established meta yet. They tried to be fancy (and screw over Flash) above anything else. All of these maps require very specific build orders. This does not at all comapare to the throughout standard map pool of KSL2. And yet Transistor actually turned out standard, saw a second season of play and began to produce very nice and long macro games from mid-season onwards.

And the only one responsible for that is the tournament organizer, some retard at Blizzard, who ruined SC2 WoL and HotS scene beyond repair already, WHO CAN'T SEE THAT WE CAN DO BEST OF 7 ON 5 MAP MAPPOOL.
Yeah, it's probably all the same one guy O_o. So what would be better? No Blizzard support for tournaments at all?

And don't give me that crap about kespa days, PL, MSL, OSL all had 4 map mappool, and in general they had 2-3 same maps! Total amount of maps at the 1 time frame was not 12, it was 6, 7 tops.
Over the course of a year the current rate of introduction of new maps is still way beyond the Kespa heydays. If players feel overburdened with preparation nonetheless then this is probably because Afreeca somehow cannot foresee their own new seasons starting in time to actually announce new maps more than a week or two in advance…

First of, why do you expect that every one cater to your personal entertainment needs specifically?
However, the wacky games you describe are exactly what new maps like Transistor or Roadkill have provided us with.

And you seriouly think games like this ever happen while progamers play unprepared? We see time and time again, when progamers play on maps they didn't really prepare, they stay inside of their comfort zone and we get to see only one-sided macro engines rolling seemingly helpless players in an anticlimactic fasion.
We get this far more with maps like FS or CB, which have been played to death by now.

And you of all people not realising how it hurts all your hard work and effort. Very sad.
Compared to no new maps (mine or others) whatsoever?

Wow why is this fuss about maps being too much? Yeah i really dont understand why blaming on maps. My reasoning is very simple, they need to prepare more builds for more rounds of games, rather than prepare for maps since they play these maps for years... They are grown up people and have other things to do in life rather than play sc all day long to taylor builds for multiple rounds of best of 7. IMO new maps will benefit their play more than trying to use one of the many known builds or think of new one on the old maps.

I am searching for the KSL Season 2 Qualifiers Day 1.

I have heard they were casted by EndingLife, but I haven't been able to find any link. There are lots of EndingLife accounts on twitch, but none of them have any vods. Youtube wasn't any help either.

I haven't watched any of the KSL season 2, so I am NOT interested in just "looking up the results".

Maybe someone can help me find the vod for the KSL Season 2 Qualifiers Day 1 without spoiling results?

Thank you :-)

I guess what threw me off is that the vod with the KSL Online Qualifier games is actually titled "[LIVE] WCS Montreal - Grand Finals - Reynor vs Serral".

He beat Light with a very deliberate, imaginative (read: gimmicky) build in a Bo1. Light is in fine shape recently and his TvZ favours him historically. In sponmatches he's beat Action 6 out of 8 games recently, too. I think Light has this, but yeah - we shouldn't count him out. He's very entertaining with his creative builds, though he tends to go overboard with them, as we saw in his game vs Shuttle in ASL. Light is just the favorite.
