The Afreeca Starleague [ASL] Season 4 is about to begin! This weekend is the qualifying round, held in the cities of Seoul, Daegu (a short drive outside of Seoul), and Busan. The qualifiers will run from September 2 to September 4, 2017.
Currently, four players are seeded from last season: Flash, Shine, Bisu, and Soulkey. They do not need to qualify. Everyone else will have to pass through the gauntlet for a shot at winning the single biggest 1st-place prize in Brood War history. The main season starts up on September 10th, 2017.
As the groups are posted I'll copy-paste the list of names and TLPD-ize them. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the information. Some Koreans have identical names (i.e. Horang2 has the same name as an unknown amateur player, so "Horang2" showed up in two groups last season before this was corrected). This is just basic trawling through Challonge and hoping for the best.
This was the first time in Brood War history where Starleague qualifiers were streamed officially, and it was glorious. The preliminaries are always super tough to get through because they're stacked by the most hungry Brood War players in South Korea, and it's single elimination. As a result they can be super hype, and it's an interesting thing trying to keep up with everything.
Keeping up with results and pools is a community effort, and I'd like to thank everyone who posted in this thread with news and information. It's like a live report thread of old where everyone comes together to just spam news and talk StarCraft.
Thanks for making this thread so great. See you all at the next qualifier event!

This is the first time in Brood War history that the qualifiers have had an official stream of sorts. Traditionally we had to make do with refreshing brackets, and hoping that someone - ANYone - who was at the venue could give updates and info.
We live in an age where players stream events from their phones. It's a lot easier to pay attention to this stuff, but it's still a very low-key production. Unless you want to trawl through the http://play.afreecatv.com/afstar1 VODs, you won't find a lot of commentated stuff.

I assume it'll be like old OSL/MSL prelims streams
1,140 people signed up for the qualifiers. They're going to be super stacked.
I'm trying to find some official sources for pools/brackets so I can update the players properly and pay attention to the tournament as it goes. Last season the brackets were on Challonge. I would love for that to happen again this year. Last season I had a lot of fun updating the thread with notable players and notable eliminations, and we had a lot of fun predicting who was going to make it through. =)

Get ready for game jumping folks!
Game jumping with some voluntary casting by Tastosis, Wolf, or Rapid would be too good to be true.

just to clarify by game jumping I mean literally moving to a different game on stream in the middle of a game.
Moved herO to group 5, added July to group 7 (oh god that'll be rough for him), added Shuttle to group 8.
These are just the players who have confirmed *on stream* that these are their groups. I guarantee it'll look even more stacked than this come tournament time.

I know, this is where Hollywood got the idea from for the fast-cut, handcam action scenes they like so much nowadays.
Sorry to break this to everyone who didn't know, but Kal (my favorite Dragon) has stopped playing. He had plastic surgery to "fix" a perfectly fine chin and jaw because of the extreme vanity of Korean culture, but it didn't go well and he has been stuttering a lot and having mouth spasms. He has a lot of social anxiety over the whole thing (having been ridiculed for his jawline for years and now this) so he stopped streaming. Hero and Tyson have said he got another job.
I don't think he's even been playing, and even if he has he's not going to be competing. Dude's gone, and TeamLiquid never really had a farewell thread so most people don't know about it.
The names listed so far are just the people who have confirmed via stream or other channels that they are attending and which groups they are in. Afreeca has not released the pools yet. Once they do, this list will probably explode with notable names. I would be surprised if JangBi didn't try to qualify.
Also remember that there are three qualifiers this time around, and two (Seoul and Daegu) are pretty close to one another. Some players might show up for one or two but not all of them, and not this one.

As soon as we get more info on these, I will definitely be making an effort to cast them live. As far as the ENG2 stream for ASL that has traditionally been cast by BisuDagger, xkcd, FlashFTW, and myself, it seems that Afreeca is discontinuing it.
HOWEVER, FlashFTW and I have gotten the go-ahead from Afreeca to unofficially cast ASL using the live feed, so we will still be there casting every day. For right now (unless we decide otherwise), it'll probably be cast on my stream.
I see this list and I m thinking "damn it looks good but i d really love to see upmagic back".
As for Kal if what you say is true it s unfortunate. Dude was great, a bit shy indeed (back at wcg 2010) but his jawline looked ok.( I never thought i d say this on TL or anywhere for that matter). That being said it s easy to blame it on korean culture. Sure plastic surgery s more common there but it s always a choice and there are always risk, I dont consider him a victim in this case, more a case of an unfortunate chain of event. But you make it sound like he has no responsibility at all there which is simply untrue.
The ASL Season 4 Seoul Qualifiers start at 9 AM today so I'll try to show up and take some pictures/videos. GSL and SSL are both broadcast on the same day so I'll have to leave early to head down to Gangnam.
The only official offline broadcast of the qualifiers will be in Korean.
Edit: couldn't make it down with everything else going on. Great coverage though!

Spoilering my reply because it has nothing to do with ASL: + Show Spoiler +
I've heard that EffOrt was genuinely denied opportunities to break out as one of the best Zerg players on the planet, held back in favor of Zergs that "would look better on a poster". This is something of an open secret.
“When you’re nineteen, all the girls get plastic surgery, so if you don’t do it, after a few years, your friends will all look better, but you will look like your unimproved you,” a college student who’d had a double-eyelid procedure told me. “We want to have surgeries while we are young so we can have our new faces for a long time,” another young woman said. That is no longer a possibility for me, I’m afraid.
It sucks that Kal was taken in by this cultural norm. Yes, you're right, he had the choice to decline. I'm also convinced he was pushed gradually towards it over the course of his life by a lot of people who flat out told him that he should do it. It is a part of South Korean culture currently. A shitty one in my opinion, one not worth adopting, but the currently established cultural norm is to look as conventionally attractive as possible, and the societal pressures to conform are amplified by the culture of respectful obedience to everyone above you.

thanks for confirming! Looking forward to teh content.
Also; Boxer in group 1? I'll definitely have to check that out!
If he does he'll probably go to Busan again. That's where he made it through brackets last season (defeating NaDa 2-1) to make it into the ASL S3.
LastScan called him "A zerg who plays only crazy zerg style in zvt. 2h muta ultra switch user." I wish he had made more of a showing, but he was up against some strong players in pools.
I would love to see Purpose again. I thought he was actually pretty talented overall, but the nerves of being onstage against former pros got to him. If you look at those games, he has the early/mid game mapped out pretty well, but all it took was one mistake to completely shatter his mentality.

PURPOSE was an unknown player named 문기호 who beat NaDa in last season's qualifier to make it into the group stages of ASL. He lost pretty quickly (looking nervous and shaky), but he was a surprise contender that season.

Jangbi lives in Busan, so it wouldn't surprise me if he did what Movie is doing and just focus on the Busan/Daegu qualifiers. Also its 7:45am in Korea right now, y'all need to chill and just wait.

In addition to the "official" stream we're trying to find right now, various players will probably be streaming random stuff from the event as well. Last season Sea was there and streamed a bunch of games from his cam, but it's a very ghetto solution.
Noble is live and currently walking somewhere. Will let you all know if he's going to the event.
Yea group one seems to be playing already but group 4 isn't even done yet, so they are stilll busy checking people for attendance, I assume that needs all their attention first and they will stream once all the groups have started !
Before that time, we can only see other BJ stream.
So hang tight. This is still waaaaay more than we got last season, where we were relying on F5ing Challonge all day and occasionally glancing at Sea's stream. =)

that's not bad, only an hour and 15 minutes about.
Juaks, one is coming at 11am KST (roughly 1 hour). Having no stream for this is not surprising though, it's actually typical for Korean Starcraft. Prelims have never been officially covered, and the past couple of seasons we have been relying on refreshing brackets and watching ghetto phone streams from players who are just casting their games or wandering the venue.
This is the first one that will have at least a semi-official stream.

Ok sorry about that.

I'm confused, is this actually SC2 SoO? Cause his name matches on the brackets, I assumed it was a namesake though. If KHJ is saying he's the ex SKT one then maybe it is.
No c3rberUs, the past several pages of us screaming about herO being out and posting results is just us warming up our fingers. The actual tournament will start at 11, after Grrrr... and H.O.T._Forever have a grudge match in the shower.
Can anyone update the event in the sidebar with streams? Britney and Larva are both streaming from the event, and Noble is streaming his own games right now. We should have an official stream pretty soon too.
Group 3 has been posted! It's very small though, it may be subject to change.

Meanwhile in group 3, 김윤환 (Hery OR Calm) went 2-0 over some unknown. Waiting in round 3 for Last to finish beating 안기범. I realized after typing this up that Era already posted this, but what can you do, I'm practicing my APM here.

I think it's just some random amateurs. Most of the names in the brackets are. If there are no entries for the names on TLPD or Liquipedia it's a pretty safe bet.

I know there is another English cast stream of this but I figured since this is a brand new day and brand new tourney, why not also try out casting once again. So feel free to stop by my ASL4 English Casting + Korean translation stream at: https://www.twitch.tv/koreanusher

I'm liking KoreanUsher's stream. Explaining/translating all the stuff from the stream without talking over it when unnecessary. Communicating with all the English viewers about stuff hard for us to find out about.

The "notable entrants" section in the OP is mostly verified. This is just basic trawling through Challonge and hoping for the best.
Interesting playstyle by Shuttle, i think it works well on big maps where terran needs to move a lot on. I wanna test that style on FS or CB with like 2-3 forges and multiple shuttle storm drops, looks really fun.
Seems like Larva is on round 3 now with no losses so far. Really looking forward to see him on the official stream. Considering his outstanding performance on stream since ASL3, I think he is the most interesting player to follow now. How will he handle the pressure?
Thank you for all tuning in my English cast mid-way. If anyone want to watch the missing games and with English translation or commentary before the official VODs are out, here's my English cast VODs:

Thanks for putting it together, I really enjoyed the cast! It makes it so much better being able to understand the commentators. Are you planning one for the other qualifiers (I don't know if there'll be a proper stream for those)?
Reach vs some amateur in group 11 round 3 is taking ages. I wonder if there is some technical problems. Larva made it to the final an hour ago and they still haven't decided who's going to semifinals.

If you lose pressure with SK, the game is over 100%. But yea, SK terran is awesome to watch.
PVJ, you're a god, thanks for updating the groups like that. I'll update the OP when I shake off the sleep.
Meanwhile, this Terror vs firebathero game is currently happening. I wasn't expecting to see Terror this high but I suppose he had a reasonable bracket. And sSak is waiting in the finals of group 12? Not really surprised, he's been really good lately.
Yeah man, what a fantastic effort from everybody in the thread posting updates and reports. It brings to mind live report threads of old where people would just post updates on what was going on since we couldn't see it live.
Wish I hadn't needed to sleep, but 8 hours later this is still going so I know it was the right call to make.

I'm not saying you didn't make the right call but you missed out on 8 first class hours. I'll sleep when there's no broodwar, is what I'm saying to myself when something like this comes up every once a couple of months.
with this the event is done for today. I'm a tad bit disappointed that we didn't see more players streaming their or others game but an official stream picking semi-finals and finals was a welcome addition.
A lot of players don't stream much during qualifiers. To cover the last few season qualifiers, I used to rely almost solely on a) the slow-to-update brackets; sometimes it takes an hour lol b) what I see with pros moving around and people gg'ing c) the occasional report from Scan and Chinese sources.

I could be wrong though, not sure.
You definitely can! Scan already said he is going to Daegu
Spoiled people looking for VODs from a Korean Starcraft qualifier, I mean jeez.

How did soO do? What a surprise! I'm torn between seeing him focus on BW or SC2 though. But imagine if he actually wins both ASL and Blizzcon! What a story that would be!

He was decent enough. Obviously had a hard bracket. Probably would have had a chance in some of the easier brackets (like BeSts)

Sea, Last, Mini, Best, Jaedonig, Effort, Sky, Light Rain, Larva, sSak to move out from my guesses other than group 1.
