It seems that GOMTV is offering it's HD service as a subscription. People will be able to watch live in HD and download Video files with DRM in HD. I would love to be able to watch starcraft in HD, but $50 dollars a season seems to be too expensive for me. Especially since their league doesn't even have MBC, OGN, or SKT1 players. It might be more palatable if they included HD OGN and MBCGame channels.

$50 is really expensive for HD...

DRM? Egads...
I think this is a pretty good way to monetize foreign SC fandom, though. If it wasn't for this GOM season's lack of T1 and the DRM, I would definitely fork over $50 for this. It'd have to be super reliable, though.
@ previous poster and OP: come on guys, $50 isn't that bad for an entire GOM season of HQ video, especially if the regular stream is going to lag like it did last season. If you are truly an avid GOM fan and watch all of the matches, then you'd be paying a fraction of a dollar for each game in HQ. I think that's pretty reasonable.
|
what does this mean for people that donated last season?
|
Does this also mean subscribers will have a private server and since it'll effectively be a very low-traffic stream, it WONT LAG? If so, I'm getting this ASAP.
Is this any different from that HD option they offered towards the end of the season last time? IIRC the quality still wasn't THAT great. They should have like a free sample imo.

what a jip, you can get the same quality on korean GOM for nothing. so it's basically english commentary for 50 dollars per season. not worth it.
|
Wow, this is so ridiculous. The quality of games weren't even that high last season, and now SKT is not even participating. Why would anyone purchase this?

I seriously doubt it...actually, confusion of HD terminology is a big problem on the internet: for streaming/flash video, "HD" seems to mean any quality which is not the absolute bottom of the barrel.
I wonder what's going to happen when everyone has connections fast enough to watch real (i.e. 1080p) HD video. Will 1080p video that's streamed be called "Super HD"?
|

Wait.
SKT1 isn't included anymore?!?!!?!?!?!?! ESTRO is in this season!?!??!!?!?
Or was that a typo?
Bisu won it last season, I don't see why they would choose not to include SKT1.
|
|
sktt1 and estro are both not playing iirc
if the HD is anything like last season's "HD", $50 is wayyyyyyyyy too much
|
Why are some teams not participating?
|
i might shell out 2$ to see a couple notable games... o_o
|
That's a bit expensive
Although, I'm sure we're not the target audience of the paid stream. Its probably targeted towards outside casual viewers who are deluded into thinking they're getting a great deal.
|
|
If the "hd" is the same as what they did for those who donated last season then this is just a huge joke, the quality was about the same as liveongame.gscdn/L1 stream and far away from anything that can be considered hd.
$50 is a huge amount even if its better than that though, no chance in hell I'm paying that.
|
They are fuckin crazy.. LOL
|
No way a single tournament is worth $50
|
At least they're not calling it a "donation" this time.
|
LMAO you can get few months of TV cable for this much come on, not even a deal for "new customers"? They must be insane LOL does that mean tasteless gets laid off when no one pays for HD?

Then they'd have to add the CPOV like on MBC.

Ok I bought one, The Stream Quality is the same as the Donation High Def stream from last season.
ALTHOUGH it is COMPLETELY lag free I was streaming even before i pressed enter this is probably because i'm the only one atm tho with maybe 10 others Facepalm.
Meh Wasn't really worth it but ohwell <3 Tasteless. I just gotta destroy one less mouse this half year.
|
If they made it $9.99 I am pretty sure about 100x more people would subscribe. I would.
I really appreciate GOMs english commentary, but 50$ is ridiculous.

$10 is a bit cheap honestly.
I would pay up to $25 for a season of gom in HQ (since calling it HD is a bit of a misnomer)

I would pay the $10, but this is mostly to support the e-sport english broadcasting more so, than to watch it in the so-called "HD".
$50 is indeed wacked, what were they smoking.

i don't think i can stream a high quality stream but i dunno. I would def pay for a stream that I can always use and that always works/streams ogn/mbc/gom though so someone make that happen.

someone can just watch the korean HD, turn off the sound, put the english stream in WMP and listen from there... if the both streams are in the same time of course

Well HD is not 640x480 resolution with more frames. HD is at least 1080, so yeah. You can't call it HD, because its not. You can call it high quality or super high quality or whatever but you can't call it HD.
Anyways $50 is expensive, especially considering that not all teams participate and that the "HD" is not really HD.

epic fail on market research from GomTV. Either their cost structure requires a set amount of users to buy at $50 (to stay alive) or they are just really bad at pricing their shit. DRM is fucken retarted, all they are doing is hurting their case for subscription. Artosis should be brought on board to talk about more technical and strategical points of the games.
Resolution does not matter, the resolution of the free viewing is fine. I recomend that GOM produce a DVD at the end of the season that can be downloaded and burned out with high resolution. The $50 (I recomend $19.99) subscription allows users to download that DVD. That is when resolution matters. DVD can be controlled to show brackets and different matches through the DVD menu. Include special sections in the DVD that are not acessible to regular subscribers/free accounts.
If they are bold, they can completely stop their free streaming with commentary from Tasteless. Force users a minimum $9.99-14.99 subscription that does not include DVD at the end of the season, rather just a high resolution account option. However, I hope they remember that Korean SC in the foreign community is built on the foundation of free vods and copyright infrignment (TL vod server).
GOMtv, you guys need to get an analyst to put all the info onto paper before you throw out a price point or start to monetize an operation. Now, if you did hire an analyst, he/she wrote a report, and recomended this plan. Fire that fuck.

More than anything else, they've now fucked up by not making the videos from this morning available yet. The main reason I was willing to shell out for this--besides the fact that I had the $50 to spare--is that I can never, ever watch the games live (so my donation for HQ was wasted last season). Now they can't even get the videos up in a reasonable timeframe? I'm fairly sure it's a one-time mistake, but I'm not happy about it.

Terrible price for the services offered imo.

This is really, really expensive. I'd rather buy a satellite receiver for that price.
|
50$ an hour also includes HD downloads of VODs. That's...kind of on the high side there...but downloads are nice.
|
50 USD and the only added value is higher quality VODs? It's the exact production that the free stream gets, but in HIGHER QUALITY. Pay up. 50 USD please. Even more funny, in a country that pirates everything multimedia they're pushing for DMR. Give me a break.
|
Are today's VODS available for premium members?

wow that's crazy. Last season the price was 1$, and now they're raising the cost to $50??? Are they gonna charge $2500 next season?

Sometimes i read a post and agree with it entirely - rather than repeat what he said, i will just nod in agreement. I can't understand under what kind of business model 50$ is acceptable for market penetration when your target audience is 17-25 poor college students. Theres other ways to monitize this than flat out charging for "high res" (a 640x480 screen and colour palatte from 1998? lol).
Oh god i just realized you can't watch the VOD's after a certain date....lol come on ~_~.

Cheap ways to add value to the 50 USD package to make it more attractive:
Premium members get to ask Tasteless questions that will be answered on air. He picks 5-10 and answers them elaborately during dead time or before another match begins.
An example would be WHY DID FLASH FD ON MAP Y INSTEAD OF SIEGE EXPAND and Tasteless would break it down in a 3 minute max bit with graphs and data. He could even ask Flash himself and include the answer in his explanation. This is pretty easy to do and adds quality content to the broadcast while giving premium members a perk.
Premium members get games that weren't broadcast during the early stages of the tournament. Record these games (with no added production or commentary to keep costs low. It could even be a replay) and make the VODs available only to premium members. Contact community commentators like Moletrap, Klazart, etc. and let them commentate on them. Cheap way to involve the community, add a ton of value and make it unique from standard users.
I'm sure there are much better ideas. Gretech didn't think this through. There's not enough value for something priced so high.

should watch a few VODs from 2001 and compare the quality lol
i'd probably pay a one time $50 fee for this as is, otherwise they'd have to add a bunch of stuff for me to even THINK about $50 a season, especially if i can't watch the VODs whenever i want. is this only for non-koreans?
|
Too expensive. Ill pay 50 for GOM+OSL+MSL. Only for Gom ill prolly pay something like 15+/-
|
Actually I hardly watch the English commentary at all on GOM, I'd rather watch the Korean version even if I don't understand it. Tasteless' commentary has gotten old pretty fast. He always makes the joke about the "panda bear guy", I mean it's funny the first 5 times, but then it gets annoying pretty quickly. Then, he always makes jokes about "nerds", like "nerd fight" or something like that. That gets pretty annoying as well. Not to rip on him, but this level of commentary is worth hardly $5 let alone $50.
|
Absurdly expensive, especially considering their costs per user of this service are negligible in compasison. $10 - $20 would be reasonable.
|
Damn... I'll do just fine with low quality... Give me a 5 pixel stream, when all you can see is a white dot for CC, red dot for hydra, blue dot for mineral patch, and I'll be happy as long as there's audio :-)

They are putting up VODs for premium and non-premium users as always. However, there is a 3 day hold-back for the non-ticket buyers on playing the VODs. This is kind of lame seeing as how they VODs were put up late to begin with. After one day, only the Tossgirl games are up. That means there will be a total of 5+ days to see the Idra or Cloud games since the initial broadcast. This $50 ticket thing is lame.
|
While its most likely naive to think that SKT and the other teams care about the fans so much, I can't help but think about the possibility that they heard about this new business model and decided to stay out.
Whether thats the case or not(almost certainly not), I simply don't have the money for this, so GOM, which was my favorite over MBC and OGN, is now last as I am probably gonna watch it in Korean on youtube(which will remove its greatest feature - the commentary by super daniel man and tasteless) and it doesn't have some of the best players.
I feel sad, because these look like the first steps down a path that leads to no english cast Starcraft games
|
Seriously, this is a load of BS.
The so called HQ stream is anything but HQ, I'm watching on a 32 Tv screen and I see NO difference whatsoever between the premium and the free stream. The premium strem wasn't stable for me, and no it's not lag due to bad connection or whatever it just randomly froze and I had to reconnnect again. It's funny how they locked the VODS for none premium users, why the hell would you want to download the VOD anyway?
Epic Failure is eminent.
|
Actually, realistically thinking about it I'll just watch the vods later. Thanks for being a pain in the ass GOM. :D

Well $50 for one season seems reasonable to me, I'd pay that.
That said everything else is just plain stupid. DRM? What? This is 2009, you just don't do that anymore. I'd be happy to pay for usable content, but DRM just kills it completely. Use open formats and a convenient distribution method and I'll pay.
What's really sad about this whole thing is that GOM started so promisingly for foreign fans. If done right this could have been a huge success (financially too) but I predict total failure for this service now.
Also, funny to see that they are still asking for donations.

Good choice by them really to at least make changes, before too much damage was done. Now they only need to change the 'HD' subscription to $9,99 - $19,99 for a season and they'll be set.
|
Can't use their "HD" stream as my internet connection is too slow for HD. I am dowloading the VoDs anyways as their VoD server is very slow. The premium service seems to be not working as intended at the moment.
Wouldn't mind paying for it, but i see no benefits of doing it. A warm fuzzy feeling isn't worth 35 Euros.

4 or so hours ago no one could watch the vods if they hadn't paid the premium price. The vods were up and running but only for premium users. The rest of us had to wait three days for them to become available. They changed that though so we can now watch the vods without paying.

I really don't understand what the hell gom is thinking with this one.
It's like some corporate guy thought "How much can we charge them so that there's absolutely no chance any of them will buy it..then we don't have to deal with this shit anymore....50 dollars a month should do it (evil laughter)".
50 dollars a month is literally twice the amount you're going to pay a month at the VERY BEST porn sites in the whole world. And sorry GOM, quasi HD english vods can't compete with primal urges Fire the guy who thought of this business model asap.
Edit- Looks like I'm too late lol..but still.

Edit- Looks like I'm too late lol..but still.
thought it was $50 1 shot for entire season? which would be more like, $10/month?
i would think its nice to be able to support this sort of thing

Seconded Kennigit on this one - it's behaviour like this (without warning or an attempt to get feedback to see if the target audience will recieve their new changes well.) that is pretty damaging for a company's reputation. Especially in a field like esports where there is only a limited amount of Korea-based leagues (and only one full time English commentated one.) so it's something of an attention grabber for the community. The issues might be fixed now/soon, but the very notion that GOM is trying to limit access for a price that is out of a lot of peoples' budgets/undesirable to certain consumers doesn't paint them in a good light right now.

As a fun fact, I googled 'DMR' first (misspelled from DRM) and I got 'Department of Mental Retardation' as a hit.. How fitting. DRM doesn't mean getting people to pay for content. It's a way of controlling (restricting) how files can be used (digital restrictions management would be a better term -.-). The publisher can for example define how many times a file may be played or copied. Or he can set an expiration date, etc....
I suggest reading the following paragraphs, gives you a good idea of why DRM is horrible. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_rights_management#Controversy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_rights_management#Obsolescence

did anyone besides me actually buy a ticket? because it shows up on my credit card as
7 Apr 2009 PAYPAL *GRETECHCORP 4029357733 ON 63.38
but i never got an email back, tried emailing gomsupport@gmail.com and gomsupport@gomlab.com but neither any reply in days..
just curious if anyone else got it to work, because apparently you have to confirm your email address, but i've tried every damn link on the website and if i cant get them to email me something, i certainly can't confirm my email.
