It's extremely common for Americans to take a year off after high school and do just that - tour/backpack Europe. So, it really wasn't an anti-European joke at all. Just a comment about what most of the kids in his class are probably doing at this moment if they didn't go straight into college.

I don't see what it being true or not has to do with it. I mean, if it were false it wouldn't be a joke but just some random incorrect statement.

The fact that Idra clearly showed he has no interest to visit Europe to 'just walk around for a year' is pretty funny. Only question would be if he meant it as a joke or not.
