As many of you know by now, LastShadow was banned this week. However, this thread will not seek to elaborate further on this fact. FakeSteve's explanation on the ban can be found here for those of you who have not seen it. Instead there is another area of his existence that we have an obligation to elucidate to the community: one of cheating and abuse.
While LastShadow's questionable forum behavior has been well documented, his cheating ways heretofore have not. This thread will change that. We have compiled a pack of replays where LastShadow is seen playing with "rigged" maps that give his race, Terran, an unnatural advantage. Simply put, the units are cheaper and they build faster.
His "abuse" was spotted against a variety of players, in a multitude of settings and on a wide selection of maps themselves. But how exactly would we describe this crime? After all, he isn't "hacking" right?
I believe CTStalker said it best when he commented with the following.
"...rigging maps is taking advantage of an implicit trust between a gamer and his opponent for using legitimate UMS melee maps..."
This "trust" is indeed the crux of the matter at hand. Is this "trust" not one of the most inherent and important elements in this community? Without this inherent and understood relationship between members of the community, would any of our interactions hold up? LastShadow has clearly violated this implicit trust, and he must understand the seriousness of his actions.
We have arranged below the known instances of LastShadow's rigged map use in chronological order. Details of how we extracted the map data can be found in the spoiler tag directly below.

Here's a guide to Rexplorer. Rexplorer is a utility that bends the info on a replay and some extra tool with the windows environment. It allows you to quickly get info from the rep without watching it but also to get map pictures (overviews), extract maps from replay files and many other things.
Normally known maps would be locked, but when extracting maps from most of LastShadow's replays, you can see they are not. This is because LastShadow unlocked known versions of maps (WGTour, ICCup) and changed unit costs, unit build times and even units stats in some of them). Then he forgot to re-lock them, so the process of checking it became even easier.
With Rexplorer installed, you right click a replay and select "Extract map" -> "extract here" and voilá: you have the map that was used to play that game. After that, you just open the map with StarCraft's map editor and you can change any properties, in this case unit's costs.

One can clearly see that LastShadow has been consistently abusing modified maps over the course of several months. He has used them in friendly games (vs Chill/Zulu), and he has used them in serious games (vs MIStrZZZ). In every imaginable circumstance, he has consistently and repeatedly cheated. I should not have to explain why this is absolutely unacceptable.
When Nony caught LastShadow red-handed several weeks ago, LastShadow claimed that "it was a mistake", and that he would make sure to get rid of all his altered maps. But here we are now, with clear evidence that he used yet another set of rigged maps, attempting to abuse his way out of playing zulu_nation_8 and Chill on equal terms. Not only did LastShadow go out of bounds to begin with, he has compounded his wrongdoings by going back on his own words. There is simply no excuse for this kind of behavior.
The community has been wronged, and it has a right to be told the truth. We go back again to the issue of trust in the community and in the game in general. Perhaps the person behind the "LastShadow" character can reinvent himself, this time as a morally scrupulous and upstanding character. However, the persona "LastShadow", cheater and abuser, has no place in our community.
Thank you to everyone who was involved in the investigation process. This would not have been possible without your time, effort, and resources.

I wonder how fun it is to win on a rigged map? Also wonder how widespread this is. I doubt it is but I cant say that it's super obvius to see the difference in buildtime when you just watch his reps semi lazy, not knowing if the map is rigged or not.
I guess he'll be coming back to the community in one way or another and atleast now he will have the peoples eye on him.

I'm kind of interested as to how this investigation took place anyways. Was there initial suspicions about this beforehand? Like better players playing against him felt like something wasn't right?
The changes he imposed weren't as big as I thought it would have been, but that's obviously to his advantage because it wouldn't have been as obvious. But for players who have been playing for a long time, they would know the timings of the game very well and would be able to have a good idea of how many units (and of what kind) he should have at a given point, especially if they're planning on doing some timed rush.
It was kinda stupid anyways, some random no namer popping out of no where writing a guide to prove how imba "his own" strategy are. "The LASTSHADOW Guide to GREATNESS to become like ME". What a sack of bullshit.

I have chosen to write a Tv? Super Pressure Style Guide...
Due to many people asking me to write a Super Pressure Oriented Terran Guide® on wgt/gg.net/b.net...
This will allow me to jump to my 3 factories very fast and get to my fast pressure style immediately. Since he will lose goons, I can fastly reproduce and soon jump to 5fact Tornado.
...ultimately giving me the lead going into a Pressure Push
...it is a good opener to my super pressure style
It is GREAT macro into a pressure style build, and can usually shift whichever way needed( turtle/pressure…pressure ftw!)
Start a pressure contain
I find this rush the most flexible and pressure oriented out of most of my pressure rushes.
completely safe from any early pressure style
Since this build is used to combat a pressure protoss
This will cause Pressure(which I love !)
I prefer marines for a soon-to-come pressure style
unless you think like me in thinking a line of 80 billion mines is a contain awaiting your 2 tanks to arrive to start a pressure push!).
So again…brain pressure!?
So there you have it. My TvP Openings/rushes. They are all generally to get a lead or a pressure style going. However granted I don’t talk much about my pressure

Apparently he was previously caught rigging maps against Idra, exalted, and Nony. It was easy enough to check if he was still doing it.

Wow, when I was 14, I stole a map to get into (U) (famous mapping clan back in the day(I'm 17 now, so think 3 years ago) and got fame on SEN(Staredit.net).
Then, my friend found out I took his map and joined (U) with it so he posted on SEN and I ended up confessing. I am probably still known as a map stealer though <3

Reading through his guides I've always thought there's something wrong with it. TvP is what I call my best mu but lastshadow completely confused me. Nothing seemed right in his guides as if he could produce units as fast as zerglings. I even got banned in the strategy forum for accusing him of using rigged maps not long ago. I hope this topic mildens my penalty.

You (Chill) PM'ed me that I got banned from the strategy forum. My post was on the last page of the topic, right after BluzMan's post where he asked since when tanks deal 101 damage. I decided to be ironic and claim that lastshadow uses rigged maps. Back then it was just a joke but now that I know the truth I remembered it all.
We both then had a small PM debate after you PM'ed me that I got banned from the strategy forum. A bit later my post got deleted, this is why you can't find it.
edit: Of course I'm sorry that I offended you through PM, at that point I didn't have the feeling that I did something wrong. I was a little bit angry because I wanted to keep posting in the strategy forum.

I never saw him play but I assumed he had to be like at least a decent Terran if he was publicly claiming to have an A+ Terran in strat guides on TL and stuff...but he played like a D terran...even with the rig he had 2.5k excess minerals, stopped making units at 150/200, mined out his main and nat, literally never left his choke once the entire game, even against Bly droning after 6 lurkers containing and muta harass/ling. 4 control groups of MM containing by lurkers, sitting around waiting to irradiate, not even a single tank to break the contain.
I also liked the dropship sitting on top of the hatch at the 6 3rd expo for like 5 minutes with 8 marines in it

How many times have you ever seen a terran get population that fast? And he's got 3 expos at 9 minutes in the 3rd game, outmasses Mistrzz AFTER losing his army a bunch, AND has the money to have 4 tanks queued in 2 facs and 4 vults queued in 5 facs AND still have 2000 minerals and 500 gas left over? Lol.

As is obvious, anyone has the right to be immune from flaming in TL.net; anyone that randomly without reason flames on another recieves warns or time bans.
THIS is like one of the only times we get to talk shit about someone; when they've been caught as an idiot and a little scrub.
While I'm not a fan of flaming, there just seems to be too many reasons to flame on this kid; more so on the hopes that from somewhere/some proxy that he's reading this.

The only explination I could think of was that he thought they were lower to begin with. ie he thought he was still raising them.

Actually, there are plenty very unattractive yet athletic people, even though a correlation does exist between attractive and athletic.
Regardless, not only does gym actually count toward GPA, but getting a good grade in gym is largely dependent on displaying effort rather than possessing athleticism. You can be Michael Jordan and fail gym if you don't show up and put effort in.

not to point fingers either, but I remember a time where he said he must have gotten it from Nony. I didn't really believe it. This was a few months ago when he and nony were 1;1 practice partners or suttin. After a month or so of playing he mentioned the situation but I really didn't want to hear it at all lol. After a week or so later they stopped playing.
I remember when him and Odin[fou] played together a lot and he joined xion. Eventually he was banned for alleged maphack. Odin explained all this to me before the situation. So I've known this for a long time to say the least :o

No No. Exalted was the first one to catch him. I remember obsing the game. TvP, exalted was p. After the match eric called him out, and it was infact altered for T>P. A few months later, right after his firs guide, was when nony called him out on it. Right after that Odin and him started playing together. Odin was suspicious the whole time but never really spoke against it to much until xion members started complaining.

Not only that either, but many other people have spoke out against him inbetween these three.
Not to mention another known time of map riggging - his famous game vs idra in PvT (shadow = P) on tau cross. I ended up uploading the rep to gg.net cuz i thought it was a good rep (I didnt notice anything suspicious, thus the reason I am not a replay manager LOL). Idra called him out after the game and there was some hype about it in the replay thread. We ended up deleting the replay within 10 mins LOL. So its safe to say that lastshadow has done his fair share of fuck ups for himself and me.

It worked well with testie and he is living proof that the community also forgives if people honestly try to redeem themselves.
Very few actually do, most just create a new screen name and don't bother rescuing their reputation or lack the balls to do so.

Actually I gave LastShadow the benefit of the doubt BUT I was myself obsing a game of him vs Idra like a couple months back and after the game Idra said LastShadow had rigged the map.
At first I thought maybe he was just a sore looser, but when watching the rep I realized Idra was in fact right and was playing with a handicap he didn't know about, which sucks.
LastShadow, no one will ever respect you unless you play fair and square and also turn down your ego a bit (Nothing wrong with ego but when you get caught with stuff like this it makes you look VERY BAD.
Quick fame is not worth cheating for, I hope you will mature with age (I think you will, honestly).
I don't think he has "questionable" posting though, he has made quite some useful posts on TL and I know ppl hate him because of his ego and Idra and the [Media] crew hating on him.

If someone's motivated to put that much time into all the stuff he did, especially when it's ultimately predicated around a lie to begin with, there's something a little more fundamental going on; oftentimes when that's the case, pushing someone over their threshold for perceived abuse takes very little, and that can mean ANYTHING.
In situations like this, it's fairly common for people to talk the tough living card and say that it's for the better that they learn to take the beating and simply pay the consequences for their actions and move on. Fair enough, I think it's everyone's entitlement to have their opinion...that said, you have to consider the pool of people you're drawing from, especially when you're dealing with the internet. Lots of neuroses and behavioral quirks that fly under the radar in person fly like a red flag on the internet, thanks in part to relative anonymity, and so you really never know exactly what or who you're dealing with. The people who tell em to toughen up are, in my experience, often the same ones who throw their hands up and say the world's going to hell in a handbasket when they hear about another school shooting or suicide.

What is good for LastShadow? Honestly I think this is one of the best things that can be done for his own good. There is no universally good way to punish people -- it depends on the person. And from what I've seen of LastShadow, I think he could use a very stern punishment. It should be made very clear that the way he has been acting gains him no respect and is actually so bad that it inspires people to spread the reasons why he deserves no respect. I think immaturity and puberty might be good explanations why he behaves so poorly, but I don't think he'll just outgrow it. When people are immature at that age 14-17 range, they do outrageous things that warrant extreme punishments and they learn from those punishments. And, again, if you don't agree with this in general, then consider it in particular just for LastShadow. He has been given moderate amounts of disapproval all along the way (on TL.net and B.net) and yet he is still coming full force. Also, I have seen no signs that he is depressive so I'm not concerned at all about lasting emotional scarring.
I think LastShadow is a robust and determined person and his most likely response is to anonymously play iCCup/WGTour/West until he gets better and then he'll return to the scene. Of course, there's no way of knowing. Even knowing someone well in real life is rarely enough to predict how they'll react to something. But the solution isn't to avoid interacting with that person at all. LastShadow betrayed the trust and tainted the integrity of a community which many many people are very passionate about. People are going to do what they feel ought to be done. And while all human interaction carries a chance of a negative outcome, that chance is not reason enough for people to paralyze themselves. So about your accusation -- are you simply reminding us that there's a chance this'll turn out bad or do you want to convince us that it will turn out bad?

Had I heard he rigged maps? Of course. I assumed he only did it in big games against big names to show all his fans. It was only once he started doing it in casuals with the veterans of this forum that it was time to take action. I'm not going to personally take it upon myself to prove everyone who posts a strategical guide is legit. Many people actually benefited from his first TvP guide (believe it or not) and the discussion that the comments generated. If we allowed everyone to troll LS for being a suspected cheater, we would rob the community of this discussion.
Again, if someone knew he was a cheater, they have two options: Let us know with irrefutable evidence, via a thread or PM, or just let it go. Derailing every strategical discussion he takes part in is not an option.

No, you can also ,non offensively, try and inform the community that he is a suspected cheater. If you knew as you said, that he was map rigger, you could of tried to bring it to the community's awareness. People could of been more careful whilst playing with him. This [b]Pressure[b] could of even let him to try and stop using rigged maps, in order to save face. If it were to be untrue, it wouldn't have brought any great harm to his name. Its like I call testie a maphacker now. It would mean nothing because I can't bring any proof that he is still maphacking.

It's not my job to be the "cheater watchdog". I had heard he rigged high-level games. I assumed he didn't do it often, and because I didn't want to go out and assemble hundreds of LastShadow replays and start analysing them, I based my actions on that assumption. Guess what? I was wrong. But for every person I give the benefit to and am wrong, I will be right an equal amount of times. So should I make a thread calling out suspected cheaters, and if innocent people get caught in between, fuck 'em?

nono, you didn't say you suspected him, you said you knew he was an occasional map rigger all along. That's a big difference. Chill says he heard accusations by the time of the first guide, but did not think his cheating was that widespread or serious. It was a judgment call.
It was not known until rather recently the true extent of his cheating when many people all brought it up and an investigation was done and this thread was made.
You don't just call somebody out for being a cheater after an occasional accusation without proof.

Okay dude, you are getting hung up on the most minor of details, so I'm going to be very specific with this reply and hopefully you'll be satisfied.
Early 2007: Someone told me he was a map rigger (I forget who). I had never played him.
Mid 2007: I met him online. Played him PvT. He used allied Mines on me and then talked shit when he lost. I never saw him online again.
~July-October: I heard about him releasing a replay on GG.net against... Idra? Artosis? Nony? Some media member where he rigged the replay. He claimed it was an accident.
Mid-November 2007: He asked for games on Hamachi, me and Zulu_Nation8 played him 4 games. He used a rigged map on all of us.
Late-November 2007: We asked the community for more rigged plays, now that we knew he is not only doing this is high-level games, but casual games against TL veteran members.
So did I "know" he was a map rigger before November. I guess so, but not indesputably and not first hand. I also didn't know the extent of his rigging.

So did I "know" he was a map rigger before November. I guess so, but not indesputably and not first hand. I also didn't know the extent of his rigging.

testie was first caught hacking in like 2000 or so, pretty certain it was tao-of-gaming that exposed him then. (he was playing a tourney, was told to screenshot during the game which was how you detected maphack back then, and sent them the screenshot which had minerals exposed which could only be due to maphack. )
then he sort of got his redemption, although people were still super suspicious, until there was a tourney hosted by clanbase in early 2002(february). I then, without really knowing how, suddenly remembered a game I had played against him 7 months prior to that, which proved him still hacking. tl.net was not around at that time, teamliquid.cjb.net might have been, but the exposure and thread happened in the battlereports.com replay section (a replay with 353 comments.. )
testie denied that it was him playing and it generated some discussion (basically some friends of testie stuck up for him, everyone not dumb did not) on the forums that were present at the time, (clanbase had some threads, im not sure what others though, possibly cloira or something.) but teamliquid.net was not one of them. you can be certain that it would have been posted here before any other place if we had the site.

There's a difference between mineral hack and map hack. While both are considered bad by the community, i remember hearing about korean progamers sometimes practicing with it on (as long as their opponent agreed) to learn the timings of the game better.
On the other hand, mineral hack has done nothing good at all for lastshadow, in fact just made him worse. What better way to ruin the real sense of timing in starcraft then by making units cheaper? If he does try to get back without mineral hacking he's probably gonna have a hard time and he's definately not going to "dominate" or whatever like he did before with HaX.

On one hand we got some people who maphack to learn timings to improve their game, and on the other we have lastshadow who rigged maps so he can make worthless shadowrush guides and brag about his wins

Isn't it actually the opposite? You need timing because you have to make assumptions without scouting. How would being able to see what your opponent is doing give you better timing?

I've played with vision of opponent on a couple times and to be honest by mid game you won't even have time to look at their base.

Well when you use maphack, after a while you would be able to look at how many units you have, and have a good estimate of what their going to have. Which you could use to time your pushes.
You could learn all this through playing/replays but I assume using MH is faster and possibly more accurate.

its true. Playing with MH is like playing and watching replay at the same time. I've always claimed this and i still think its a good way to practice. But of course, its not fair to your opponent so i guess playing with shared vision is the way to go.

Well... LastShadow aka LightDark's reign of terror on WGT has now ended. After starting with a good rec only playing TvP and making bold claims on reaching A rank then apologizing, he pretty much stopped playing upon realizing he could not TvZ to save his life and dropped like 12/15 games.
Anyways then WGT admins decided, this guy doesnt deserve another chance to "prove himself", at least not on WGT. ban.

Another interesting "map bug" is the game at blizzcon between yellow and reach where the map allowed the reaver damage upgrade to be researched multiple (maybe infinite?) times. Reach upgraded it 3 times but still lost the game

DayFly, an Orc, found out that MBC rigged the maps in favor of Orcs and in disfavor of Night Elf to reduce the number of NE players in the 2005 MBC Prime league. Elf wasn't really imba at the time (1.15 was Undead's patch with FoV and Mad[Q]FroG winning everything), but still Spirit_Moon went over the rig and won the damn thing with one of the most dominant televised performance in the history of pro gaming. It was rigged only because Koreans much preffered the Night Elf race. Just think of how many Terrans there was at the height of Boxer's carrer. And how many Protoss there are at the height of Bisu's career now.
Back to the subject, this scandal, needless to say, killed WC3 in Korea. Freedom (yes, the one in Samsung Khan), who many thought would become the best Human player in a short amount of time, left WC3 for SC in disgust. Luckily China was just starting to play online in 2005, so the game was saved. And Europe is still very strong.
We are lucky it's LastShadow who rigged it and not a professionnal mapmaker paid by MBC, and ordered by MBC to do this.
Let's just say the WC3 population had a lot of respect for DayFly after this, and everybody was saddened when he left for his military service.

the skills you learn from one rts carry over between games a little. freedom isn't a unique case either, for instance, midas started out as a kingdom under fire progamer (some korean RTS) before changing to starcraft. i believe elky made 4th in an osl and 2nd simultaneously in one of the early wc3 starleagues as well

He wasn't at the top already. Insomnia, Miou, ToD and Sky were better than him at the time, but he was a rising star.
His current SC level is about what his WC3 level was when he left. A 50% player in proleagues.
