not sold on the mandatory female player thing though, do they have enough skilled female players? (toss girl is the only one that comes to mind). will female players also be playing against male players? or are they just restricted to female vs female games? what about 2v2? will that be coming back?
lol female players. but other than that fuck yeah!
also interesting to see the old teams formed again but without sponsors..does britney hope to re-attract those same companies or is this just nostalgia...
Really interesting that he's allowed to use the old team logos / likeness in this. I guess KeSPA doesn't have any interest in shutting it down, not that they necessarily even technically could. Britney's hitting me in the nostalgia feels with all those graphics coming in with old Proleague and/or OSL intro music.
I hope that this becomes successful so that it's also offline and the prize money goes up. 10k is low for a teamleague but if they get more sponsors, who knows. I'm not sure if using the old logos would benefit the league. Wouldn't it make more sense to try and get new sponsors to fund the teams?
And how will they divide the players? Oh, I see. Like the days of old.
dang, I really wanted to see an offline version of this. Since there's a lot more starpower on each match day and fans grow attached to teams, I think they could have packed the studio consistently. Still enough BW interest in Korea. One day~

Am I the only one who's disappointed that this isn't offline? ATB was great and it saddens me that there's no signs of it ever coming back. We could've been on the 4th one now :/
Still, an online proleague could be fun and hopefully, it shows there's enough support to make it offline in the near future.

Yeah, hopefully at least the finals will be offline
This is wonderful, can't wait to see another Korean BW team league. I have to say, the forced inclusion of female players seems a little tacky, but in a scene like BW I guess we should just be thankful that any effort at all is being made to shine the spotlight on lesser known players.
Btw, as much as I understand the publicity stunt they're pulling off by enforcing female vs female matches, I can't help but feel the scene would benefit more had they chosen to draft amateurs into the team rosters.

ahah YES please
Ahhh a foreign bw team would be soo cool. Quick question though; could Scan be on it?
Someone write a letter to Britney asking for a team of foreigners to participate. And Cancerx will translate it.
Mention that, - several top foreigners recently took games of top Koreans Koget 2-3 Shinee Eonzerg 2-1 Miso Terror 2-1 Larva I'm sure there are more results I'm not aware of, I think Dewalt beat Free also? - we have a good female player Cadenzie who played ASL qualifiers and took a game of `nexusboy`
There is almost no chance he will accept of course but it doesn't cost anything to try. We need to do it now as it just got announced or it will be too late.
My English is a struggle and I'm bad at writing that's why I'm asking.
Exciting stuff. Kinda weird to see that there's no real concrete start date when early June starts in like 2 days.
The Female match sounds very exciting, I like how high stakes it is.
I dream we get the Tossgirl vs. Zerggirl showmuch we deserve.

We'll see with the full rosters coming out. I'd imagine there would be room for amateurs with people going in and out of the military.

All I can think of is lag. And I don't believe anyone wants to deal with lag issues other than Peruvians who might not know any better.

They really should make new teams, OZ has two players? :D I get that this is also about nostalgia, but at the end of the day the teams should be somewhat competitive for it to be fun.

Hell yeah. If this is completely offline, then there has to be a way for to get a foreigner team going. Ret, Draco, Leg, eon, Koget, Dragon, Baku, Telecom, Terror, Trutacz, Sziky, Cryoc, Michael, there's too many to list.
OP says Online Only. I really don't think it will credit TL/foreigners well considering different timezones and BWs notorious latency issues. I'd love to see foreigners compete with Koreans, but not online. Offline is next to impossible unless the full tourney is held during a weekend. And even then I imagine we would need to set up a big community sponsoring action to get our players to Korea.

I'm curious; like who?
I saw Jaedong, Mind, Action and I think Mong teaching and their students are also playing versus each other and there were some Protoss students too, so they surely have pro players teaching them, too.

Highly doubt it. The idea behind this new PL is to have some nice games and get that atmosphere/those nostalgic feelings back. Adding a new team which is likely to have some lag issues (Koreans want TR24 after all) is unlikely imo. Still, who knows. Maybe Brittney will go for it.

well even if they dont want us in the league, maybe we can settle on a exhibition match since one team has a bye per week?
I'm potentially excited about the 12 teams...since it means they are going to need ALOT of lower tier ex pros/BTeamers and amateurs. If it's Bo5, that means you need 55-60 players at a minimum, which means at least half or so ought to be new blood with good opportunities.
Now if they Bo3 or have a silly format, that would be a little more disappointing.

I disagree. You can't have offline proleague. It's far too many matches, with too many people, on different days when everyone is living over the country. Unless true professional teams made a comeback I can't envision you getting 30+ of these guys to make trips with a weekly or greater frequency to one of the Afreeca studios.
It's not going to be as big as ASL, but depending on format and how it ends up being viewed, it could be significantly bigger than any other event.
my korean friend told me that jaedong and flash are both training one female player each and they're both worse than me, so basically the girl matches are gonna be a freakshow which sucks

I guess those 6 fans of STX can be happy.
I'm not sure STX is neccessarily stronger than SKT. Depends on the format. Best is a very solid protoss, Larva is one of the best zergs, and Rain is the current best protoss and most recent ASL champion.
Terror, Calm, and Notice basically don't add anything. Obviously herO is pretty damn good. Mini has been strong lately. Last is good, but I don't think I'd consider him better than Rain or Larva overall atm. Shuttle is decent, but nothing special.
I'd probably give the edge to STX currently, but it's not a blatant advantage in my opinion.

It might have just been unconverted from the converter, which I think looks at SC2 as default, where IIRC Leta played Protoss. I don't recall Horang2 ever playing SC2 but that might be the same?

Well to increase their quality you have to participate in the competition and give them an environment to improve their skills.
Example:the same is it with english football players in the Premier League.they dont get alot opportunities to play in a match and the work load in the season is to high. One of the reason why the English national team dont produce good results at the WC.

Progamers like Bisu, Jaedong, Flash, etc. all had to get good enough to become progamers on their own time before they could compete in events like proleague. You're putting the cart before the horse, for what reason?

That's too harsh imo. This is still the top of the top playing in this tour and this is still the new proleague. Having one match for fanfare and popularity reasons, as well as appealing to noobs, isn't a reason to toss out the entire thing altogether.

The teams will almost certainly have to be evened out playerwise, right? Meaning that those people will have to find people to add to the respective teams. I refuse to believe they have a 2 man team + 1 girl for an entire league.

Man if BW was popular in Mexico we could have had midgets instead.
I don't know who's playing today, but it's time to take this back to 2009+ me.
SKT BEST KT LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Proleague was always my favourite part of Pro Broodwar. Yeah FanTaSy is my favourite player ever, but there was something about following SKT that made me feel like I was part of 1 big family. All the SKT fans on here all cheering for the same people as me and every single game mattering. I really hope this is a huge success.
Trying to predict the results of MPL seems next to impossible to me considering the introduction of infrequently used maps, utilization of female streamers, and varying dedication levels of the ex-professionals as of late.
On May 29 2018 14:27 SchAmToo wrote: Pretty cool idea! I like the inclusivity being added in there.
Let's see how this goes
you're not gonna like Korean/Afreeca's version of "inclusion"
Can someone explain this remark for those not in the know?
I'm only guessing, but I could imagine Wax is hinting at the inclusion here being, in practice, more so a form of exclusion. That is, the women are brought in more as exotic objects, the others if you will, not so much as legitimate players. If this is the case, then it may be argued that it only further demarcates professional BW as a men's field in which women are seen as outsiders or curiosities.
The motivations may be good, if it as an effort to promote women as equals in BW, but in practice BW is such a hypermasculine form of culture that it might well turn out ugly. The ugly turn of events may be the spectators interpreting the women's games as secondary, as circus, as a form of sexual entertainment etc. ("Omg hot girl!") Of course it'd be much more desirable an outcome if what happens is that women are empowered to attend the masculine field and as a response the field changes, too. One form of changing the masculine field of BW may be abstaining from treating (here, elsewhere) the women players as if they were objects (of desire etc.) and more as player-subjects in their own right. We'll see.
I watched the announcement and the group selection live last night.
I can't remember everything but I will post whatever I recall.
SK T1: Best, Hyuk, Rain, Larva STX Soul: Last, Shuttle, Mini, Calm and Honorary Member Terror[fOu] aka ChulGu KT Rolster: Flash, Reach, Action, Mind Woongjin Stars: SeaGuemChi, Light, Organ, SoulKey (I forgot his OG Bnet ID) CJ Entus: Effort, Miso, Snow, SkyHigh, Mong, Rush Sparkyz: Leta, Zeus, Horang2, Oz, Tazza (LoL Progay as well) Team 8: Sea, JD, By.Hero, Movie Samsung Khan: Stork, Firebathero, Sharp, Shine
Above are the list of players and teams. There are also female gamers (Female streamers) and 1 per team.
I can't recall all of them but set 2 will be female vs female mandatory games.
