I dont even know why you guys are surprised at the "level of BM" if you watched Larva's stream.
His reputation is having a cocky persona and doing crazy. Thats his showmanship to his viewers he is streaming to.
I didn't think he would do this far but kinda half-expected since he tried to constantly do nuke rush as terran off race and the casters in interview kept asking him if it was "too easy" or "clearly over everyones level". I think that loosened the boundaries larva thought he could do, and if he thinks there isn't, he will go far
I wonder if the flash vs zotac participants still happening, since Larva wanted to organize flash vs world type of team battle setting last night when he was talking with zotac players tho.
I had half thought on back of my mind larva would cause some sort of controversy. It was getting stronger as he progressed through and larva started slacking off on his attitude more and more and casters calling it "easy" more and more

Legend feeling like this is very justified imo, just disrespectful from Larva

Its kinda of strange because he was defending foreigners when his viewers started to bash them on their performance, saying that foreigner players did a lot to get to this point without as much resources, then he did this. Think the "looseness" of the tournement got to his head.
Justified anger from legend
|
Lx got savaged pretty hard. Nuked by Larva's offrace, then he afks a drone vs him, plays with his feet, leans all the way back in his chair.. yikes. His actions might have been ok if both players were in their early 20's (or if they have history together etc.) but Lx is much older than Larva and a veteran of the game.
I get that Larva was trying to put on a show and all but you have to put yourself in your opponents shoes as well..

I will try to tanslate this: I just smiled even you used nuclear bomb in game, but besides game, you performed like a clown.

Larva is awesome. He's like an overpowered anime villain where he doesn't even have to try very hard against an opponent who is fighting with all this might, and the opponent still gets memed on.
Also, just so no one forgets, I taught Larva how to play.

lol honestly this whole tournament/stream was super entertaining, i know some people didnt like the loose and non serious commentary and the whole larva bm situation is conversational but i was entertained nearly the whole time

dont blame him in the slightest. Larva was a fucking asshat. You get paid to come out there and pretty much a free 10K for winning. Yeah he is funny so act up between games and joke around on stream but LX didnt deserve that shit in game. disrespectful and rude

To be fair, even if Larva had history of his showmanship with his taunting midgame vs Sea, his streaming antics, getting way laid back as tournement progressed, this was bit out of hand. It was really funny and drew tons of attention, but Larva stepped bit far here. He could have done some trollgame builds, but foot was bit too far.
It was bit obvious in hindsight that this was going to happen, since as the tournement progressed, Larva got loosened more and more. Casters reaffirmed this, and he commented last night on stream that "foreigner tournements seem to be very laid back".
Got to his head, drew viewers and controversy. His specialty

Legend's post on 12/1
I will try to translate: My last bw offline match was in LA 7 yrs ago. http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft/WCG_2010 The same place, tomorrow, I think it's truly the very Last time for me. Because I was always confident and looking forward to match before. But I am not that interested this time. I like different things at different age. I can't go back to the era as pro. It was my best time. So I will seize every day now.

The whole thing was even called "Showmatch". From Liquipedia: "Zotac Cup Masters Showmatch is an offline tournament which is sponsored and hosted by Zotac." He wasn't a part of main tournament. Legend, Draco and Larva got paid basically just for arriving there and grabbing some attention from viewers. It wasn't some championship fight, like what the fuck guys. It was showmatch, meant to get attention. Therefore Larva put up a show. You should really chill. What was Larva supposed to do? Get in there, end whole thing in 45 minutes and go home just like that? People would cry about another Korean owning foreigners. This event turned out much better than I expected, he dropped a game to Draco in the beginning and he made finals interesting.
I am 100% sure he asked organizers if they are ok with this, and they most likely agreed because they wanted this showmatch to be as popular as possible. I understand that Legend might feel disrespected but come on. Like I said he wasn't fighting for championship, he isn't full time player unlike Larva (correct me if I am wrong), and got paid a lot of money for being a part of showmatch. Did he really treat this final like ASL finals?
|
really? is this foot called beyond the game? Shame on e-game.......

so you said it is called Showmatch.I agree. but is is not a Footshow.
Legend is not a full-time player now,but he used to be a SKT1 pro.
Larva may nuke or face-hatch in the game,It is okey. Because it is a showmatch.
But using foot?it is too much.

I got a chance to play with and get to know Larva at the tournament and from my experience, he was seriously so chill, outgoing, and helpful to all of us there. He went out of his way to greet everyone and to get to know them even if his English sucked. He in no way had the intention of putting someone down like that, but merely to put on a show because he thought people in America loved trash-talk and trolling (his idol is Connor McGregor, who is king of trash talk), and he's used to doing that on his stream. Me and Hawk witnessed him shoving us aside and turning into a dragoon going on all fours all of the sudden and we were like what the hell - he said to us immediately after that he just has to do these things because he's a showman and this is what he does for a living.
Larva was oblivious to the situation and probably had no clue this tournament really meant something to Legend, which was a part of why he was pretty upset. I agree in-game BM like nuking and killing off a drone is OK if you can pull it off, because that stuff is really fun to watch from a pure Starcraft perspective, but some of those camera antics may have been a bit over the top and maybe it's important to discern with your opponent first if he's cool with it.
Anyways, just wanted to chime in for whatever it's worth. I love Larva and still do, though he should apologize to Legend, if he hasn't already.

Larva didn't want and aim to disrespect Legend and/or chinese players in any way. I don't understand why you're getting so offended. Even if I was chinese and even if he was doing these things to my favourite player I maybe will upset but don't instantly start hating on him. Are people seriously this salty? Larva made a show out of a showmatch.
As for people whining saying Larva should show respect, fuck that. It's a competitive game and you don't have to respect opponents you can literally beat playing with your foot. Like someone said above respect is earned if you want to be respected by top korean pros how about you become able to beat them playing with their feet first then they might not toy with you like that. This drama is ridiculous the only thing that was hurt was legend's and possibly china's pride. If they are so mad then use it as inspiration and try to improve to "take revenge".

As a person he has every right to feel embarrassed and upset about being completely humiliated by Larva, but he's the real loser if he's calling larva trash, calling him and his fans mentally ill and lecturing him about his place in the progaming world just because his precious feelings were hurt.
Larva clawed his way to where he is right now, and he did it without a team or a salary supporting him or paying the bills; antics that he pulled in this tournament is what entertained his viewers and gave him the donations and the means to continue playing and practicing and continuing being a progamer.
Lx you're the real trash who doesn't understand what it takes to make your way to the top.

For context, "过去送个外卖娱乐下" (which the translation in OP did not get) is basically a metaphor for "I'm just there for fun since I'm bad lol".

woa way too harsh. I think legend has right to be kinda salty since this was pretty much a public humiliation on a game that mattered to him. Larva had permission to fool around and make it entertaining/showboat, but while it was hilarious for viewers, it must have been humiliating for the opponent. Larva sure entertained his viewers, but you have to admit that was pure public humiliation. I doubt Lx knew that there was going to be foot/sleeping thing, and just thought antics would stay within game.
Just think in his shoes. Lx has pride as progamer too, and Larva destroyed that with his performance. Its perfectly understandable frustration.

Well, this is a competitive world, and I hope you will say the same thing when Beijing nukes Seoul or Copenhagen.

Larva made Legend lose face not in private but a public stream broadcasted to the world. This is one of the most wrong and worst things you can do in chinese and i think asian cultures to a large extend. Public humiliation is a big no in chinese culture. Imo i find it disrespectful of Larva everything considered.

Now that i rewatched the whole thing i gotta say it is disrespectful. HOWEVER i have one big concern: the whole tournament was set up in a very very disappointing way. I cannot understand how Zotac sponsors a tournament with people just goofing around (seriously, there were times when 90% of the commentary was off topic for hours, what the hell?) and turns SC:BW into a circus show.
Yes, there were some great games and yes Larva did some foolish things, but the whole tournament was set up like this. Overall i cannot think this will attract sponsors and it seriously put SC:BW as the most serious esport in a questionable light. We sure don't want ASL/OSL or whatever to turn into this, right? BW used to be the exact opposite. I love some random stuff from time to time, but please keep the game itself professional. This is what set the korean scene apart.
Just my two cents.

I think the issue here is that LX is an old retired veteran who is simply looking for some fun in a nostalgic way. It isn't realistic to demand players from any country other than Korea to actually "get good" to reach Korean professional levels without an established tradition of progamers and practice environments, not to mention that the skill level of any player would decrease dramatically after they hit around 27-28, as this is the age where the brain starts to slowly deteriorate. Larva probably did it as a means of entertainment and probably didn't mean to humiliate his opponent, but there are certainly more mature, respectful and responsible ways to do that, such as drawing a heart on the minimap with missile turrets or something. I'm sure LX would laugh and give Larva a pat on the back if he drew a heart with command centres flying into LX's base. The cynical reactions from many Westerners also reveal a concerning issue for the BW environment, our environment should be built upon honour and respect, reacting angrily to immature and disrespectful behaviour doesn't make anyone a "butthurt snowflake", it at most shows that they have a bit of compassion and respect. I'm pretty sure American players, or in my case, NZ players, would react in rage if our top player was humiliated in a live tournament. After all, players are still human beings with dignity, having more free time to practice (hence having more "skill") doesn't give anyone the right to publicly humiliate another player, no more than how having more money doesn't make you a better person.

Thats why i dont like larva antics. He was making himself looking and doing miserable things on strea, i thought he cannot become a popular streamer. It apeared that people in korea really enjoyed that retarded behavior and he became one of the top streamers. I was like "WTF, are the most retarded people in korea on afreeca?" So now we can see how this infantile insolence attitude doesnt fit well in real life, and why people need to stop supporting it? Larva extreme cases of "craziness" was always annoying and irritiating to me, i tried to find the fun in it but it was just miserable thing to watch.

Rough Translation: On Dec. 4, at Zotac Cup Masters SC:R International showmatches held by Zotac and Blizzard Entertainment, Korean Progamer Larva did something seemed to be humiliating his opponent. With regard to this accident, we announced things as follows:
- What Larva did in the match is very rude, Zotac will not stand for this. For the embarrassment Larva brought to Legend and his fans, Zotac will apologize to Legend and all the fans and media concerning this accident officially.
- What Larva did in the match has nothing to do with Zotac, nor did he tell the organizer in advance. What he said 'the organizer permitted this' is definitely not true and brought about trouble to us, we had a thorough conversation with the player on this. We promise we will improve regulation during the matches, in case something happens next time.
- With regard to this, Zotac finally determines that:
Larva will be banned from any Zotac Cup events from now on! And we promise we will never invite any players who have done something similar before. We are open to all reasonable ideas.
- Finally, Zotac wishes that Larva will apologize to Legend for what he has done.
Since rest of the announcement is irrelevant, I will not translate.

Translation with help of online tools: Korean player Larva's uncivilized behavior was his temporary burst, he did not talk with ZOTAC in advance, so-called"I asked ahead of time with the organizers if I could do it or not and they said I could" false statement also caused serious problem on ZOTAC, ZOTAC has communicated with Larva seriously at this point.

Title: To people trying to sturr up trouble from today's final behaviors ^^
I asked ahead of time with the organizers if I could do it or not and they said I could
If you are offended, you don't have to watch ^_^
The present reaction was resolved and everyone took pictures and they said it was cool
Don't worry ^^
Shame on Larva, again!

After really looking at it it’s pretty clear that he didn’t intend to insult legend with his tomfoolery. He was just trying to put on a good show. Especially to foreigners (a new group to watch his stream). While it sucks that legend was the butt of the joke and I can’t blame him for being mad I don’t think larva intended for it to be like that. He should still probably apologize to him if he hasn’t. Also I’m somewhat doubtful about a statement only coming from the Chinese division of zotac. If it was anything other than trying to save face I think it would be a bigger announcement

To think about in Olypic game, Korea some sports not good at,and opponents win you in similar way....tell me your thinking. Larva didn't want and aim to disrespect Legend and/or chinese players in any way. I don't understand why you're getting so offended. Even if I was chinese and even if he was doing these things to my favourite player I maybe will upset but don't instantly start hating on him. He was just trying to make it entartaining for everyone, it's his style if you watch his stream. And if you read Jaeyun's post above Larva told that he's showman and he's doing all stuns to satisfy his fans. So calling his fans retarded and shitting on him stupidity.
So, if I understand correctly, you don't understand how people are offended by Larva's behavior, but you're offended by Incontrol's interview?
Did I get that about right?

Well I would have thought that one of the reason top tier players are top tier is their top tier usage of hands But this really shows how big is the gap between top pros and everyone in BW!
Anyway the point was, that if he had lost, that would be kinda questionable, because it would be essentially throwing the game, which is bad even for a showmatch. But I don't really understand why he is getting punished for winning like this if he is able of that. Yeah, some people are offended, the usual business - are people ever gonna realize that them being offended is just their problem and nobody else's?

I don't think there would be 1 reaction if he did it to one of the other foreigners. It's just the chinese honor culture that makes it way more extra. It's honestly too good tho. If you lose to toes and nukes, it's a god damn shame, but it's a showmatch and nothing more.

It was a SHOWMATCH, not a competition. Showmatches are there to have fun and goof around. That's how it was always been.
Look at the all star proleague events, same concept. You think you would invite a famous streamer and expect him to play seriously without any showmanship from a streamer known for this kinds of stuff?
If he were to do this in ASL, this would be a different story.
What is more embarassing are the people making it out as the worst insult in human history.

No thats not the crux. We do not know if Larva just misunderstood what kind of shenaningans he would be allowed to. There are various degrees of BM.
Rude and disrespectul behavior should always looked down up? Yeah apparently it doesn't apply to FBH or JD hatchery bm. If savior did a statement like Lx after FBH danced around like that, FBH would have gotten the same reaction Larva receives (and it was in a serious tournament, not this showmatch tournament). It rather depends on how the receiving end reacts to it.

Yeah even for a showmatch it probably was a bit much, but the organizers didn't say anything after he played the first game, or the second, or when he finished the third. Telling him to relax a bit and stop going so hard on legend could have improved the situation instead of creating so many problems. I don't feel like the organizers thought it was a problem before Legend whined to the chinese twitterscape.

I thought the whole thing was awesome and extremely entertaining. I would love to see an event like this again.
Gonna get mad if Larva beats you with his feet? Well, don't let him beat you with his feet, then! It can hardly be argued that Larva violated the integrity of the match, since he won all 3 games, so I don't see what problem there could possibly be.
Gotta be a little more thick skinned and recognize when someone completely outclasses you, in my opinion. I don't think anyone in that tournament could reasonably be going up against Larva and expect to win.

The "Chinese culture" argument doesn't make any sense either. I am all for the Chinese people's right to have any culture they want (as long as it is remotely compatible with basic human rights) - but that just means that they are supposed to act like that. You can't just say "my culture is that I get a benefit X" and then expect people to give you this benefit - in this case not making fun of you. It just doesn't make any sense. It's actually pretty interesting that we have the same problem in the West (with so many offense-taking groups) as they have in the East, shows how the human nature is universal.

It was the biggest insult in any gaming competition I've ever seen (maybe I didn't see enough?). To me it's just a matter of what it's called, I'm used to calling a match between two invited people a showmatch, the main event and the 'showmatch' could have names switched and it wouldn't matter since both were looking like a regular tournament, but whatever.
Not trying to be embarassing or anything, I just think it was pretty insulting and I've never seen anything like it, pre/post-match bm or ceremonies are usual thing but I personally have little respect for "showmanship" of that kind, doing that and making up an excuse like "I wanted to make some fun for viewers" is like intentionally spitting on someone and saying that you had a bad taste in your mouth and well you stood in a bad spot at a bad time dude sry (well maybe it's me who's overreacting now :D I hope you get what I mean though)

I know if I were legends I would feel very embarrassed/shit with what happened during his matches with Larva. That being said, Larva didn't get talked to after doing it in game 1 and there were no written rules about stuff like this. So while rude (although I found it funny at times as a viewer), I don't think Larva deserves a ban. I don't see Larva playing in any Zotac cups anyway as i'd be surprised if there were anymore big BW tournaments that a Korean can play in, but non the less I think it's a over reaction.
Fun event and was fun watching Artosis/Tasteless/Day9/Incontrol casting the BW event.

All he needed to do was to behave decently when playing with a person 10 years older that he's not friends with. Not terribly unreasonable in any civilized culture. Larva was simply being a dick thinking he'd get away with it because it's "part of his image".

This is so disrespectful towards an organization that put on one hell of a tournament this weekend. The production value was great, the games were good, the cast was excellent.
Given, the qualifiers were a learning curve, but this is 1000% the correct decision by ZOTAC.

I find it depressing that you can be banned from all potential future tournaments of a brand just because you don't fulfill some people's arbitrary and unwritten notions of behavior. In general I find it very depressing that you can be punished just because someone decides to get offended.
See, it's all about the wording - posters on your side of the argument sounding all high-horsey doesn't make you automatically right.

Imagine what will happen if Boxer got such BM by some young foreign talented player at showmatch? Legend is one of the greatest BW player here in China, icon of Youth/Passion/Honor. He prepared and practiced a lot for this showmatch as I know, PvP with Jaystar on 5 match maps for example. He showed respect and professionalism to ZOTAC, players and audiences.

The only people annoyed with BW fans are SC2 fans, but the annoyance is mutual.

Well, this is a competitive world, and I hope you will say the same thing when Beijing nukes Seoul or Copenhagen. Lol I am shaking. Some nerd threatening with the power of the chinese military. I'm sure the communist party is focused on the huge area of BW and is itching to take revenge with their nuclear might.
Interesting but perhaps not surprising you don't understand a simple post. As a part of the BW community, I hope everyone enjoys the game, including LX and all gamers that do not have skills of former Korean progamers, just like as a human being, I hope everyone enjoys his/her life in a competitive world. Since in both BW and the real world, there are tons of people better than you, I think your are the one who should prepare for a revenge, or a ton of revenges, following your own logic.

larva saves SC:R by spitting the chinese into hosting more tournaments just to ban him indefinitely from them?! What are you even talking about? This is so disrespectful towards an organization that put on one hell of a tournament this weekend. The production value was great, the games were good, the cast was excellent. Given, the qualifiers were a learning curve, but this is 1000% the correct decision by ZOTAC. i don't disagree with anything you just said on its face; it's the PR right moves what i was pointing out was the futility of it when there weren't even going to be any tournaments to ban larva from in the future. it's a great PR move though!! So you're criticizing them for making the correct decision because you THINK there won't be anything else to follow this up with..? Am I getting this right? I'm pretty sure you should read Incontrol's comment just above yours. Why are you the one getting offended here lmao And no, for the third time no i do not think they made the wrong decision. It's less of a criticism and more of an observation of amusement. Let's be real here dawg, I love BW and would love another live tournament of this scale, but thinking that ZOTAC was planning on another tournament given the current level of interest and activity in the game is just daydreaming. But hey like I stated previously, now ZOTAC has a reason to keep making more ZOTAC cups: to have more tournaments to ban Larva from haha I apologize for saying that you should respect a sponsor and organization that: 1) Put on a great event 2) Put up $35K in prizepool 3) Brought all of the players in at the organization's expense 4) Listened to community feedback and adjusted their event for the best player experience I guess you're right here, I should just allow you to openly disrespect that without commenting, because it makes sense to do so. ? I think they did a great job too lol; go ahead and read my previous posts: have i said anything negative about the tournament games, the production value, the prize pool, the fact that we even had this tournament? the only one i'm disrespecting and criticizing here is you and your posts. and by disrespect and criticizing i mean pointing out that i'm not upset at ZOTAC or think they're doing anything wrong (even if it's slightly pointless), but for some reason you're getting personally upset about this. go find someone who actually is shitting on this tournament and be mad at him and not me lmao Show nested quote +On December 05 2017 00:40 CHEONSOYUN wrote: jokes on zotac; what's the point of banning someone from your tournaments when weren't planning on hosting anymore of them anyways?

just be glad i only made amusement of ZOTACs decision instead of criticizing and pointing out the flaws of their tournament like i've done with your posts; if I had done that to ZOTAC you'd be a lot more unhappy

I think it’s pretty much inarguable that what Larva did was rude and disrespectful given that his opponent was not in on the joke. It’s patently obvious that it will be insulting in these circumstances. I don’t think Larva was being malicious, but it really reflects poorly on his self-judgment that this wasn’t apparent to him.
What does amaze me is the level of vitriol we’re seeing in the defenses put forward for Larva by various people in this thread and elsewhere. The most common seems to be that Larva’s antics made the series more entertaining and that Lx would have lost anyways. Well, no shit? What’s that got to do with whether it was rude or insulting or offensive? Larva does these things on his stream all the time, but that’s a different context than doing it in a livecasted LAN showmatch where *everyone* knows he is the overwhelming favorite and where he has basically been given a free trip to the US to be handed a $10k check. Another is "maybe Lx should have won if he didn't like it" or "maybe Lx should get good instead of crying." Again...???? What's that got to do with whether it was insulting or rude?
It seems incredibly difficult for some people to hold these two ideas in their mind simultaneously: that what Larva did was rude, but that they also found it entertaining. I guess the conclusion that follows--that you enjoyed something that many found to be meanspirited--is too much to admit? Therefore Larva was entirely justified and there is no issue whatsoever despite the objective fact that there seems to be a 50/50 split between that opinion and the opinion that it was rude and insulting? (and again--it doesn't need to be a split, because the two ideas can exist simultaneously). Come on.
I honestly feel like if you can’t see this you’re either still a teenager who’s never had to interact in the adult world or you’re the kind of person who is completely socially oblivious and is a pain in the ass for those in your social orbit.

All this talk about “disrespect” is incredibly silly. I feel like I’m back in high school.

I can't believe anybody seriously thinks iNcontrol was mad at Larva. He was just trolling him and being funny in the Geoff way as always. I laughed my ass off during the post game interview, not once did I think Geoff was mad.
I had to laugh so hard when Geoff said "Maybe more research could be done". How could anybody think he was serious or mad?
And yeah this is only blowing up now because of China being proud as usual. If the other player had been Draco or any of the western foreigners, everything would be fine.
But since it's Asian culture I am surprised that Larva doesn't get it and did what he did. It was bound to produce drama, since it was Korea vs China.

Your ad-hominem at the end really detracts from what was otherwise a well argumented post.
Btw on a side note, Draco vs Larva was pretty entertaining yet equally one-sided, so the argument that this stuff was needed otherwise the games would be boring is really not working for me.

What's the point in having a show match if you don't put on a show? Even someone who's as anal about manners as I am (not that anyone knows me), don't see a problem with what happened.
And people seriously thought iNcontroL was mad!? Are people really that bad at reading the situation?

Ya, I was laughing as hard at the foot as I was at Inc's trolling during the interview, super obvious he was 100% joking with Larva. Might be harder for Larva to understand through a translator though, why he thought he was mad at him.
I think if it was done to Draco there would still be blowback, polish fanboys would be irate and Draco is much more of a presence in foreign BW, has a lot of fans, but also I think Draco possibly would have had more of a sense of humor about it, not sure.

I bet half the people in this thread sent angry emails to Destiny's sponsors. The other half are probably BW fans.

The amount of people offended by larva's actions is astounding. It's a fucking showmatch! Do any of you guys ever watch all-star games or showmatches in other sports or games? Goofing around and flaunting is NORMAL. Especially so when there is a gigantic discrepancy in head to head skill level.
If the tournament host wanted fair competition they should have really considered who they were inviting to this tournament. One look at the commentary for any of the larva games and you already know the casters have no interest in such a one sided game. They don't even fucking discuss the current game. They're talking about random bullshit lol
|
Guys, you have to look at the big picture:
For a struggling game like Starcraft, this is AMAZING! A lot of non-bw nerds were watching that, and they will be talking about it for a long time to come. They will be talking about Starcraft. All the Chinese news media talking about Starcraft. Next time there is an event like that all those, that normally wouldn't even know, will tune in just for the drama.

About incontrol, imo he was looking kinda off almost all the time, not related to Larva. His attitude was like "i dont belong here" maybe he had different thing on his mind or something. He look like more serious grown up man compared to the other more nerdy guys around him.

Larva is just too naive. He didn't know about the consequences. Why Zotac invite Legend from China? It's not because of his skills, it's because of the huge China gaming market.
After Larva's showtime, every people in China will be against Zotac for sure. Just like Chinese people against Korea Lemart. And Lemart goes bankruptcy.
Let's see what will happen Larva just put Zotac in a shitty position right now. Nice Job!

"There's no such thing as bad publicity" In general it might be true, but bad publicity doesn't make kids want to play the game more, only puts it in the newspapers, which might make Blizzard money and that's it.
Otherwise the whole match fixing and the Sea scandal would have made an impact on the player base. It only made an impact on Sea's subscriber count.

Imo Larva is the best thing to happen to post-SC2 SC:BW. I don't agree that his antics are detrimental to the game. He's the perfect showman/villain and he's breathing life into the community.

Not all publicity attracts people. People play games for fun. This publicity is giving people the impression that in this game, gamers frequently humiliate opponents of less skills, and others cheer for it. Then why would one play this game, especially it takes months or even years to just learn the basic skills?
|
Legend is such a pussy... Shame on Zotac for banning Larva for putting up a show ... in a showmatch lol
|
It's easy to see both sides of this. The uproar is certainly understood but that seems to be more of a Chinese nationalism thing than anything else. Not to mention with Zotac being a Chinese company, the upset Chinese gamers are their primary market. It would be stupid of them to not do something about this.
On the other hand, it's a showmatch. With Larva having been able to fool around in past games of this tournament, it's easy to see why he thought he could get away with doing these things. He's a showman for sure, on his stream and in tournaments. This was just kind of on another level of showmanship, though. I think the whole foot thing maybe took it a bit too far. I mean, for god sakes, Legend was even laughing after he saw that Larva killed off his own drone in game 1. It's easy to see that there was some fun to be had by doing such things, but it didn't need to go to that extent I think.
I also don't think that Legend's response was entirely appropriate. He called both Larva and his fans retarded, and said something along the lines of "these things are what separates you from being a number 1 player. Trash.." I mean, I get it that you're upset, I would be too if I was in Legend's shoes I think. But i mean...Legend lost to a guy that was playing with his foot. and with his eyes not even looking at the screen for a good portion of the time. If you lose to that, and you say that those antics are what separate Larva from a top pro, then what does that make you?
As I mentioned earlier, It's easy to see both sides, and I think the entire situation could have been handled differently by everyone involved. I don't know what the exact right answers are, because if I did then I would be the PR for these people, but there are things that are both right and wrong about this situation, from all parties involved. Hopefully everyone can come to an agreement of some sort soon, because this tournament was really entertaining to watch, including these crazy antics, and I'd love to see more of the tournament in the future

Yeah, this is exactly it. Some portion of BW people are in an uproar about this. But, people who are generally interested in esports see it as entertaining and motivation to compete. I feel like a lot of the BW community is a bit out of touch with the main-stream esports scene.

Was it BM? Obviously. But to ban him for it? That seems extreme, and Legend's reaction to it is unreasonable as well.

The organizers have ample opportunity to correct this. They could have, for example, paused the game and asked Larva to behave.
I havent kept up with the BW scene for quite many years, so not sure what has changed. To see someone using their foot during the finals while afking a probe was rather amusing. Judging by some of the top comments on the reddit post (https://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/7heywl/larva_plays_with_his_foot_in_the_grand_finals/), I think a who arent familiar with the scene would also agree with my line of thought.
Was a warning issued to Larva beforehand? No? Why not? Why would the production even show Larva playing with his foot if it is inappropriate? Because what he did was of interest?
So there was this "silent nod" from the organizers to allow this happen during a match. Bending over due to pressure from Chinese fans just make the organization look less... professional.

Larva misjudged the mood and created entertainment at the expense of Legend. Probably happened to everybody in the past that you teased a friend too much to the point that he actually got upset. Shit happens, but it's not cool and you should apologize afterwards if you failed to read the social situation.
|
Whoever invited Larva to participate should have done their research and known that larva is an entertainer and a streamer. Anyone who has watched his stream for more than 30 minutes would have known that. If they thought Larva might cause some kind of issue, distraction, rage, etc during the cast, the organizers should have discussed that with him. I don't blame Larva at all, he didn't know any better. Banning someone from future tournaments because they didn't know any better is a joke. Also.. The "trolling" by incontrol in the last interview was super awkward and cringey to watch, as Larva had no idea Incontrol was trolling him.

Have you ever heard of fighting games?
If you don't want to put in the time and effort to stay good, you've forfeited the right to not be humiliated if you step up to the plate.
As a player you do not want "close games". You want to smash your opponent into the ground, make him cry uncle, and get those W's.
If anyone thinks that there is an expectation of a casual player(fun) to be as good as a pro, and is worried about being humiliated by them, I've got news for ya.
You will likely never play anyone even 1/100th as good as this dude, so don't worry, play the game, and stop being a fucking pussy who's worried about being "humiliated". As if a casual is going to be on stream vs larva.

That's because BW is an archaic sack of shit. Be happy people are even talking about it.
And secondly, there are usually two types of people in comedies. Straight man, and comedic foil.
The foil is the one who usually is the actual comedy in any given comedy. They are also the fool, the humiliated, and the butt of the joke most of the time.
MOST PEOPLE WANT TO BE THE FOIL.
If my kid gets teased everyday playing baseball, ive failed as a parent to address the situation.
If kids are JOKING AROUND CONSTANTLY, and my kid is a stick in the mud autist, I would tell him he needs to be less of a partypooper and try to enjoy himself.

Your point does not make sense at all. Of course there will always be someone who consistently beat you no matter how good you are, do they all start calling you noob once you lose? Do you call your "opponents" noob after every win? If so, enjoy it, but many people don't. I play a game to win to enjoy the game itself, not to enjoy the feeling of beating someone I have never met. Yes, I do want 'close games' - there is no fun at all to play a new gamer, it is a waste of time.

You're a disingenuous douche thinkinger.
Your analogy doesn't even hold up.
You said you sent your kid to play baseball and older kids made fun of him.
Well larva is 10 years lx junior.
If I send my kid to play baseball, and he gets upset YOUNGER KIDS are making fun of him, that shows a lack of maturity in my kid(lx).
The youth always make fun of their elders, because they don't know what it's like to be older. The older person should have the maturity and wisdom step back and realize this isn't their time anymore, and they know what it's like to be brash and young.
Your position is fucked, and makes no god damned sense.
And if you want people to play your dogshit game from 20 years ago, maybe the barrier for entry shouldn't be MONTHS of grind just to be 3/10 at the game.
I can pick up the majority of fighting games and be proficient in a month tops. Most people can. Most games are designed to be that way.
But BW isn't. So fuck off.

What, the thing was not even in China? All you defenders of cultural sensitivity are completely laughable then. It would have some semblance of a sense if Larva was a visitor in the offendees' country, but this way? I am sorry, but if you travel the world to meet with other people, those people aren't required to research whatever random "cultural requirements" you might have made up to have an easier life.

Dude... you don't have to be Chinese to understand why Legend would feel upset about Larva's actions. It's basic human emotions. If your opponent (who I assume is not your friend and someone you don't know very well) makes a joke without you being in on it, it's very easy to misinterpret it as an insult. It's as simple as being called a "jackass" from your best friend and a complete stranger. Is it that complicated to understand?

Legend got humiliated in front of thousands of viewers and now it's all over the internet. What the fuck does it matter if it was in China or not? Do you even socialize, bro? The lack of basic concepts in ethics in some people perplexes me.

It seems to me that you guys live in some fairy tale societies. I don't wanna ruin your cozy sleeps, but when you eventually find out that by real world standards, making fun of people in a computer game still isn't even where the scale of potentially unpleasant behavior starts, you are up for some rather nasty surprises.

what a joke, they can call both the player and the fans mentally ill, and play still (super insulting and fucked up to say, lost any respect i had for Chinese players) but for getting outplayed with a foot they ban a player, this is why SC as an entirety has failed to maintain its success as an esport. slowly dieing day by day and whatever comes to spark life back into it such as a fun player, gets shit on by some fucked establishment. honestly babydick syndrome. disrespect is part of competition and if you cant handle being embarrassed by someone far better than you then dont show up. go ahead ban everyone better than you who can style on you, soon the tourny will be Chinese only

You realize that the two most popular esports, League and Dota2, have much higher standards for their pros? Riot and Valve regularly ban pros and streamers for BM behavior.

Sport and competition for them is not about being the best among equals, but simply finding someone who's worse.

they also ban people for """bm behavior""" on the ladders, which is absurd to me, but doing shit like this in a broadcasted event is insane. i really, REALLY disagree with how modern esports coddles people. i don't consider this coddling larva though, the guy is absurdly bm even among bm players.

Slightly offtopic, but valve have never disciplined a professional player in any way for any action except matchfixing in Dota and afaik also in CSGO

I like how he calls Larva "mentally ill", that's more offensive than anything larva did tbh. Larva surely went a bit overboard with his bm i would agree with that. The problem i have is that zotac didn't do anything about it in the moment, it would have been easy to just pause the game and tell him to stop. No they apparently were fine with larva's action until all the offended people in the world went onto the internet and started crying. Instant reaction after that. That's really bad in my eyes, i don't want to see people operating that way :/ So yes Larva was disrespectful, i still enjoyed it though. People like to get mad and organisations actually act on this outrage. That's the actual horrible thing here.

Larva is putting on a show for the viewers and it seems most love it. That is his personality.

what about low priority and comm bans?
