So sick, the viewer count on twitch was really good today and it's great that we'll see more english BW coverage on twitch .
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

I just hope it won't overlap with SSL and ProLeague... ah who am I kidding... ProLeague will be Monday and Tuesday, GSL will be Wednesday and Friday and S2SL will be on Thursday...

BW SL will be on Monday and Thursday like this season... RIP SSL and PL

yeah huomao is more sc2...longzhu is where BW is at (where the vast majority of current China BW players also stream)
just watch sk911 on longzhu? i think he is good restreamer, he sponsors balloon matches for afreeca BW players before, the stream also has some passionate viewers chipping in to help cast/translate during the big games.

jangbi went to military on 21 July 2015. So don't expect to see him until mid/late 2017

thats why i give a rough date instead of a specific one lol. also depends on factors like vocation/service type/injuries...but its around there, still a long way to go.
(is there even a proposed reduction? wiki still says the usual)

So just to be clear, is Kongdoo out of the picture? I was kinda confused it was Afreeca announcing all this awesome stuff when i thought Kongdoo was the organizer of all this stuff.

Sonic had some plans back in 2015 but now we can pretty much assume that those plans went to the trash can.

If Sonic manages to recover in 2017, we might have SSL and NSL played concurrently on OGN/Afreeca.

Should be overall at least 4+ tournaments a year, of this size or bigger. And also a proleague.

Well let's see if OGN have any plans this year, they are splitting LCK with SpoTV this year so the time slot might allow for some BW to be thrown in.

well SSL 11 was the last one becasue of the "sudden" lack of interest from SBENU to further sponsor Broodwar, instead focussing on Sc2 and Lol. (now only Lol) So, you can't blame OGN for Sebnu giving up on bw i think. I don't forsee pulling afreeca a similar stunt, simply because SC2 took such a big downswing in Korea recently, regarding all the retirements and the WCS changes.

They stopped SC2 support waaaay before SSL 11.

They focus on League of Legends, Hearthstone, VainGlory, and Heroes of the Storm, for now.

Is this the big announcement that was being made after VANT finals or is there something else I missed? I closed stream a bit early I think.

well SSL 11 was the last one becasue of the "sudden" lack of interest from SBENU to further sponsor Broodwar, instead focussing on Sc2 and Lol. I don't understand. Wasn't Sonic always passionate about BW alone? o.O

Omg, can you guys imagine.. what if BW just grows and grows and goes back to the level it once was. That would be insane.

Well many have military service coming up so I guess nothing is really permanent after 2016 here unless new players gradually join which is highly unlikely considering the age of the game.
So 2016 could be the burning comet of Brood War.

But how is that possible?

Brood War probably already burned off long time ago.

But since Brood War was the brightest star of the eSport universe, it birthed DotA2, LoL, and SC2 to fill its void.

And as the biggest star, it is now sucking everybody else inward.

Well let's see if OGN have any plans this year, they are splitting LCK with SpoTV this year so the time slot might allow for some BW to be thrown in.

Nothing is changing in regards to their schedule. The 'split' which was agreed upon was that SpoTV can do a relay broadcast at the same time as OGN's.

And it doesn't take place until the Summer split.

Focus sure, but they still supported their sc2 team. I didnt mean it was their prime target, but it happened.

It seems weird that they would just drop it completely. No other sponsors interested? (RIP sbenu)

I think they were happy with the turnout, but that's different than viewership.

also didn't SBENU pay for everything? I mean it wasn't like it was OGN's own league just that it was hosted by them.

that's a good question, i've asked my self the same. Im inclined to believe the answer is yes, or at least SBENU did pay a majority. If we take into consideration OGN has made no move prior or later to do anything BW related, it seems they were not interested in putting in their own funds. Understandable, i guess.

but i'd appreciate any real inside someone here might have?

Yeah, Sbenu did pay for everything. That was the whole deal with SSL12, Sonic didn't have time to manage the preliminary stuff like qualifiers/earlier stages and all the stuff that has to happen before OGN touches the tournament.

I like your neutron star analogy. Starcraft Broodwar survives as long as the players are there IMO. there are plenty of people to host tourneys both big and small.

Every time anything pops up in Broodwar, someone makes a "this may be the last [blank] we ever see", times they are a-changing post. I think that's how it's been for the last ten years or so. At some point, you have to move past that.

I am a bw fanatic, but it kinda feels this way to me still. Look at the crowd at the last finals: 25-26yo guys on average, plus a total lack of fangirls. Sponsors, tournaments and active ex-pros are awesome, but the key for survival is young followers, of which there are very few. I'm enjoying it while it lasts, but can't help feeling like it's the late autumn for our game. The shit Sonic got his company into and the impending leave of Bisu don't help too. What we need is Flash and Jaedong destroying the Fish server once again.

ps: does anyone know if these 2 tournaments include the next VNSL, or are they a bonus? Is the next VNSL supposed to happen?

Can we not think negatively?

Can we just enjoy the ride?

If by some chance that next season, someone that haven't been to a Kespa final gets the champion cup, then hey that would definitely motivate younger generation to replace the old guards.

But honestly, don't really care if its the same few guys on top. As long as the games are high level enough for me to go: "Yeah there is no way I can physically execute that.", its all fine!

Peeps just need to chillax!

I hope they don't take over another tournament name. It would be better to name their own like they did with their SC2 team
If all men were created equal there would be no reason to declare it.

I won't deny that his TvZ was very good. One of the best? Maybe. The best? Definitely not. What I meant was that his style was very painful to watch for a zerg player like me. It was disgustingly exploitative. There was no beauty to it like in Fantasy's or Hwasin's TvZ for example.

I would argue that his fundamentals far exceeds that of FanTaSy's, and his failings in the match-up was more to do with his failings as a player, rather than his limitations in that specific match-up. Flash rated him very highly for his pure fundamentals, and just watching dismantle lesser players with his monstrous mechanics was a sight to behold. Hwasin was a very linear player who exceeded in timing attacks, and his ability to pull off huge wins off his battling capability, but had no where near the amount of late game management and multitasking ability of Light's. Just in terms ability in this one specific match-up, I would rank Light above both Hwasin and FanTaSy to be honest.

That's not what I was talking about. Again, I don't deny that his TvZ was very strong. But I didn't like to watch it. It made me feel sick to my stomach. In contrast, watching Fantasy for his innovative/interesting play and Hwasin for his elegant micro was much more satisfying and beautiful to watch as a zerg.

I totally agree.
In my opinion there is one major condition to make BW big again in Korea:
Kespa-teams have to revive (small) BW-rosters that can and do support young/new players.
If thats established they may grow until BW is back in its former glory. Sadly the graphics makes it really unappealing to Dota-, LoL- and SC2.players. Maybe they should change to Starbow in 2-3 years .

As far as I remember Fantasy was known for going mech-only TvZ, because he would lose left and right with his bio control. Nothing appealing in this. Only at the end of pro-BW he started relying more on his bio-based builds. Also as a zerg player I can't agree with you :/ Light's TvZs were most anticipated for me (well, after Flash v JD, and any other T v JD)

Sonic had some plans back in 2015 but now we can pretty much assume that those plans went to the trash can.

If Sonic manages to recover in 2017, we might have SSL and NSL played concurrently on OGN/Afreeca.

His credibility is gone, I don't see the sponsors taking a chance.

Maps without pathing issues are for scrubs. That's where the real multi-tasking challenge lies. All hail to Neo Medusa and siblings.

Actually whats interesting to note is that after Light's 0-3 loss to Kwanro, Light became the tvz monster that we know him as today. Before the series Light had a decent tvz but it was nothing really special then he just went on a insane 13 tvz win streak which included Kwanro after.

Just to clarify, I think by "today", you mean 2011 and yonder.

Not sure if Light will (ever) return to form, but in 2016, but his TvZ is far from dominant and he struggles against even high level amateurs. Not sure if it's the lack of crisp bio control or slow mech switch, but alas, in his current form, his TvP is more effective than his TvZ.

These days, Mind, Sea, PianO, Last, HiyA, and several others are far stronger at TvZ

we don't need new players, I could watch Bisu and Flash playing till we are sixty :3
and yes, somebody should make power rank and do it on 'once every 3 motnhs' basis for example.

Anybody has any idea what happened with this?

Small update: There is something in the works, but nothing is confirmed or being announced yet. We will see something in Summer most likely.

By now you should have adjusted your expectations regarding any bigger news in BW over the last couple years. Usually when something is announced it will most likely happen but at a much later time. See the sonic leagues, the last two TLS and now the Afreeca league.

As usual, your colorful and emotional language makes you say what you surely do not mean. What have you done that is so much greater than afreeca.tv that you can say "they don't give a shit about BW?" What service have you provided that rivals the magnitude of what afreeca has done in allowing pros to generate hundreds of hours of content per week, get paid, play in tournaments, and have it cast in English? Please, mind your manners.

In any venture in any business there are bound to be setbacks, losses, dropped projects, etc. We don't know anything specific about what happened/what is happening at all, so don't shit on the people from whom you wish to obtain something.

Ah, it's you again defending as expected. What Afreeca done besides organizing one event of VNSL which sponsored by Vant 36.5? They became big company, bought Gomtv and leading GSL thanks to percentage of donations for BW pros. They just forgot their roots just like every big company else (OGN who swithec to LoL, KeSPA who gives 0 shit about BW now, Sonic who has gone greedy and started organizing SC2 SSL & Proleague). They announced they gonna host 2 tourneys - one in 1st half and 2nd in 2nd half - on January! Look how much time passed where SC2 already finished tons of tourneys. That's not normal because that's not how tournament regime works, the game will gonna die with that huge interval and halt like it was post kespa era when Sonic tried to revive it. And besides this I have my own personal reasons to shit on Afreeca. Also it's Afreeca's fault we lost one of the biggest BW VOD youtube channel. I waited so long before posting this because I was hoping that Afreeca will give a fresh start and new life to BW but still same shit.

What Afreeca has done is created a service through which gamers can stream and make money off of streaming. Without Afreeca there would be no Flash, Bisu, Effort, Shuttle, etc. streams. That is the ROOT of the BW scene. Without Afreeca, there would be NONE of the things you enjoy now, besides maybe TSL. So if you're saying that Afreeca will kill the BW scene by being late/having issues with on a tournament, you're ignoring the fact that Afreeca is the one that gave it life post-KeSPA in the first place. To speak down to Afreeca for your position is so mind-boggling to me. You could say "I hope that everything is okay with Afreeca," or, "I hope these tournaments come around soon!" But, to say "they don't give a shit about BW anymore," is presumptuous and childish at best.

TL;DR You want BW content? Go watch your favorite pros on Afreeca ->

You want BW tournaments? Go watch Kim Carrier's league on Afreeca.

You want more BW tournaments? Go watch KLM's Race Wars... on Afreeca.

You get my point? Don't bite the hand that feeds.

@Jealous, please respect the others opinion, in every thread you are defending your linear point of view and for you is the only one that exist, if he thinks that Afreeca doesnt give a shit about BW, he has the right to say so, and yes they are not making this service to BW for free, you know that Afreeca makes money from the streamers?, so it is not like: oh please everybody worship Afreeca, BW community is feeling dissapointed about not having news on these two tournaments, it gives the impression that they only care about the profit from the ex pros but not making bigger things happening for the whole scene, besides here comes this guy from Afreeca and only says vague things.

Small update: There is something in the works, but nothing is confirmed or being announced yet. We will see something in Summer most likely.

Hopefully...

Is it me or everyone suddenly became blind and did not see this post? I understand the hunger for an OFFLINE EVENT (which you keep failing to understand @Jealous) But can you at least cut them some slack? For now lets enjoy the Afreeca stream. I'm sure the offline events did not end forever and they will return soon.

I did read very well, and the conclusion is: it may happen or not, if yes:likely on summer or not.

Guys the first post speaks for itself.

This making me think that there should be happening a tournament already, with no news so far it looks more or less abandoned. Why making public announcements like this when no word about it after? A bit bitchy.

Respecting another's opinion isn't just a blanket that you throw on to cover all opinions. Some opinions are less valid than others. The opinion that 1 + 1 = 3 is not valid. The opinion that Afreeca doesn't care about BW is one that falls in the "less valid" category, especially when presented in the way that he did. That is actually the crux of the matter for me; the tone in which he talks about a service that has provided and continues to provide the backbone to the very scene he says Afreeca is killing. This is why is I can respect the way you presented a similar stance.

I can understand disappointment, and I know that Afreeca has fiscal compensation. I'm not saying everyone should worship Afreeca either, but to make ignorant and disrespectful statements is a little too much for me to accept.

@Wrath: "Keep failing to understand' is a bit of a stretch considering that it wasn't brought up in my conversation with Outscar or any other conversation I've had, for that matter. I can understand the desire for an offline league, I share in it. However, that doesn't mean we have to start talking down to the very people that provide these tournaments.

hmm im doing what i can about foreign tours and its nothing i can do for (their) offline tournaments right? They doesnt appear with anything on the matter, and when someone said like "wtf is happening" you appear calling him crybaby. Having progamers streaming is not like having tournaments like last VNSL. If you are satisfied to watch just streams many people including me are not and you should deal with it. Personally I dont find much hype in watching streams and i do it rather to kill some time than anything else. BTW do you get any money from afreeca?

To be fair you said that it was "A bit bitchy," to make an "announcement and then post no word about it after" and I promptly provided you with a post that happened less than a month ago that is on the previous page, meaning that you didn't put in the tiny amount of effort necessary to satisfy your query before you to complain and point fingers about it.

Also, they didn't come in and just say "wtf is happening," which is a valid question, and instead shifted straight to the blame game saying "Afreeca doesn't care about BW." These are vastly different things. I already conceded that the lack of offline leagues is saddening and that I too would like another, but bitching about it on forums accomplishes nothing and only makes that poster seem like a child who didn't get his candy when he expected it.

Lol yea Afreeca funneled some of that BW money into having me post on TL shutting down entitled people instead of investing it into an offline tournament, you got me there.

PS Thank you for doing what you do for foreign tournaments.

I saw it, but its more vague than the announcement they made at VNSL finals after which nothing happened.

True.
It happens, people get emotional, no need to judge every word. Its also true that viewers have the right to ask for what they are promised and get angry for not getting it.

I did not say we should be talking down Afreeca. All I said is that you are being a little too defensive regarding that.

I just hope that something happens in the summer but then I again, it is a little disappointing to be promised something in the first half of the year and end up with a possibility that we MAY see something.

the point is, saying Afreeca doesn't care about BW is absurd, there are 3 key elements to this, Blizzard, The Studio and Sponsors.

Blizzard: For all I know they have their schedule to keep with their WCS events and that everything should end before Blizzcon meaning that Afreeca would have to put SC2 as their first priority because its their biggest moneymaker for the studio

Studio: god knows what their schedule is like and how much time the studio takes not just for broadcasting their first priority SC2 events but also for cutting promos and other mini events, plus whatever the staff is handling.

Sponsors: We rarely hear about the tournaments that almost happened, but this happens way too often, they might be having a lot of trouble with securing sponsors for the tournament, you have to understand that unlike for SC2 they don't have the additional backing from Blizzard to get a sponsor and while I imagine KONGDOO to be a huge help I honestly doubt a lot of people are stepping forward to sponsor a BW event at the current situation, I'm pretty sure this is the biggest reason why we haven't had any announcement yet.

So yeah, you can be mad at afreeca for shooting themselves in the foot for announcing something and not delivering an NSL when we wanted it.

but saying they don't care is absurd and moronic.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's due to lack of studio time tbh. Even SC2 proleague is getting shoved around into different time slots to accommodate League of Legends etc.

There will be a big break after Season 2 of SSL/GSL and Proleague in which they could hopefully do something. But I guess time will tell.

2 eSports and 2 Offline Tournaments worth per year, which is why we won't have any this year.

bleh, they should rather support LoL with that money. That game needs more promotion and tournaments. If Riot has to finance it all by themselves they will go bankrupt before tomorrow. But no, afreeca invests the money in some jackass on TL. I bet afreeca have some personal beef with Riot and want to see them die. Everything else would be illogical at this point.

Apologies for being vague before, but it was the most information I had received at the time. Two more tournaments are still being planned for this year, but the second one will likely run into the beginning of next year.

Doesn't look it's been shared yet, but there appears to be some progress being made, ZerO mentioned on his stream that 6 progamers have been invited to, or have already started to, do some map testing for the next NSL:

: ZerO, EffOrt
: BeSt, Shuttle
: Flash, Sea

I believe the point to be this:

Since the end of Kespa, several big institutions have been announcing this and that. And then the slate just goes blank; they on occasion have trowed out some last minute tour and made an effort;

However the problem is building the trust with people; They promise this and that, and then i personally, just stop believing and stop hyping myself; Even when i read these 2 "big" tours coming out i was doubtfull allready; Its like false ardvertizment;
A sandwich shop says they are doing this and that, and 1 week from now they are not doing it anymore; you go in once, twice, and after the third time you stop going; and when someone mentiones this place, or someone wants to go there, your like "oh yeah, don' t bother, they don' t deliver"

Now with a sandwhich shop you can change, but here, how can you change? there is nothing to change too. Some people have stopped "following" bw because of this reason; Becoming an un-trusting institution is much more damaging for the scene that one might think. So instead of promising 1 big tour every season, they should get there shit toghether and organize 1 mega tour every 2 years. If they put all their energy and money into this, its much more productive than wanting to do too much;

Can he participate after the ban on stream? I know they are completely unrelated things but still... Makes me wonder.

What ban was this?

Also, great to hear updates. The foreign Brood War fan beehive was getting a little to disturbed lol.

Bisu said something about disabled people and it was in such poor taste that he got banned for about a week.

Typical protoss player. They're certainly the jocks of the Starcraft world. (and isn't it odd that I just said on skype the other day that I dreamt Bisu was acting like a jerk but Nada was cool?).

I remember some photos from the Nada body thread where Stork definitely stepped his game up. He started as a pimpleface nerdling but Protoss shaped him into a man.

Replace Nerds with Zergs:

his is also a typical pregame speech for SKT before playing KT.

End of puberty, good food cooked by house team ajumma, work-out schedule that you follow with your team, learning about self-maintenance and getting self-esteem.

Currently, Afreeca streamers are testing the maps. I heard from someone in my clan(KaL) said that registration date will be starting in June, and the qualification starts in July.

Also, Instead of calling 대국민 스타리그(National StarLeague), they might change it to Afreeca StarLeague.

I haven't bought my plane ticket yet. I need to sell my car first.
However, mostly like it will happen that way, yes.

I don't really understand why people see that as terran map:

1) big main that is very difficult to defend with turrets (vs reaver or muta)
2) 3rd is very difficult to take (at least 3 points to defend with 3rd)
3) A lot of high ground makes it difficult to push
4) 2 entrances to natural - seriously? You can get harrased and overwhelmed by lings / dragons / dts all game long

etc.

1) fair enough
2) that's good for terran, just 2 base everyone
3) easy to leap-frog tanks for terran though
4) just wall of before the small choke and you will be good. Dragoons might cause a problem but it's not like they can move done the choke once they destroyed the wall from the high ground.
