There are a number of factors that are taken into account when matchmaking such as physical proximity, latency, difference in rank, and length of time for queuing. They can change one but it would affect the balance of the others. Keep in mind that there just aren't that many players queuing at any given time, especially outside of Korea. So if USA and KR weren't matched and you are a USA player, it's likely you'd have to wait a very long time to get a game and that player might be ranked far apart from you. | ||

Physical distance isn't the only factor in determining latency. Somebody farther away from you might have a better computer and connection etc and lag less as a result. There's always going to be some latency in online games, and long distance just adds to that. We're talking time frames of a small fraction of a second, but that matters a lot in a game like SC where, ideally, you want instant unit feedback. | ||

Prior to the change, Blizzard weighed location more than latency, which made games laggier for me since a lot of South America has bad internet. Now they prioritize latency over location. | ||
