The 1st Ladies MBCGame Starleague

MBCGame hosted its first starleague for women in 2005, which lasted from February 17 to April 7. It was a double elimination tournament (with brackets for winners and losers) that featured eight of the world's strongest female players at the time. Each of the matches was a best of 3 except for the Losers Bracket finals and the Grand Finals, which were best of 5 matches. All of the VODs have been provided as a courtesy of powerpoint98765432 on Youtube.

The Rules

Just to clarify how the tournament works--all 8 players start in the round of 8. The 4 players who lose their best of 3 matches go into the Losers Bracket, and the 4 players who win their best of 3 matches go into the Winners Bracket. Players in the Winners Bracket who win their best of 3 matches remain in the Winners Bracket; those who lose go into the Losers Bracket. Players in the Losers Bracket who win their best of 3 matches remain in the Losers Bracket; those who lose are eliminated from the tournament. The last woman remaining in the Winners Bracket will face the last woman remaining in the Losers Bracket in the Grand Finals, a best of 5 match, for the 1st place prize.

You know the players. You know the maps. You know the music. You know the rules. Let's start!

And there you have it, folks! I hope you enjoyed... and that no one had any heart attacks. Questions, comments, suggestions, and criticisms are highly encouraged. If any of you know of any other female progamers or have extra pictures that I haven't posted, then please share them.

There are some more pictures of Navy and l3etty on their respective Daum sites, ncnavy and l3etty. If someone who knows Korean could help me obtain them, I would really appreciate it.

So I was checking some VODS and seems like tossgirl used the +1 build vs effort I was surprised because I always thought flash was the first player using this b.o, at least on tv.

Tossgirl is imba. The prettiest AND the best! I wonder... if the Ladies MSL took off, would we eventually have competitive female gamers in the main leagues? Tossgirl was able to take games off other, full time progamers, so that doesn't seem like too much of a pipe dream. Imagine a female Flash, taking proleague by storm, all-killing and taking names like nobody's business. That would have been amazing, and would have been a giant leap towards removing the gamer bias that exists presently across all game genres.

Nice work, but I have to say I don't quite like the wording of the thread title....

It's like it's (un)intentionally trying to steal the spotlight from this thead :D

p/s: great article and research btw. Usually the female progamers all were forgotten ( except Tossgirl ). Didn't know so many of them tried

amazingly awesomely nice job, Shalashaska! so good to have all this information together! (don't know if there was such thread before)
:O how did you find all this stuff after so much time?
also - imo January is 2nd and is not even close, might be even a tie with ToSsGiRL (terran imba! (back then)) Coaching for so much time

Hahaha, thanks for your comment, Mr. Technics, good sir. I don't think there was a thread like this before--at least I didn't find one when I searched...

I found all the female progamers by looking at the participants of the all-female tournaments on TLPD. Then I just looked on Youtube for the VODs, and I took many pictures with the "print screen" key. As far as the other high quality pictures go, I just surfed the internet until I found them.

You know, I think you are absolutely right about January. She's probably had a bigger influence on e-sports as a whole due to her being a coach for Samsung Khan--not to mention she guided two Protoss legends, Stork and Jangbi. If I were giving awards based on who had the biggest impact on e-sports, January would get 1st place, no doubt. However, I gave more weight to accomplishments in tournaments than influence. ToSsGirL has consistently been at the top of the female progaming community for the longest time. Jongmi and Navy were ToSsGirL's biggest competitors in the female leagues. That's why I gave them a lot of credit. =P

So I was checking some VODS and seems like tossgirl used the +1 build vs effort I was surprised because I always thought flash was the first player using this b.o, at least on tv.

Yes, I was surprised too when I first saw the VOD. I think Flash popularized a variation of the +1 4rax build where you do a medic/marine push before the Spire completes. Normally you would only see that push in the 1 rax expand into 3 rax. Am I right?

As in progamers you mean - they won courage and got a progaming license?

Haha yeah, LenA is really beautiful.

By progamers, I meant they played in major Korean tournaments that were televised. Also, a lot of them (if not all) were on some progaming team, such as Samsung, Soul, Pantech, etc.

Haha, if there were a female Flash, you could say it is ToSsGirL since she was completely dominant in the all-female leagues. It would have been nice to have men and women in the proleague, but I don't think most StarCraft fans would want to watch anything but the most competitive play.

Hmm, that's a good question. I looked at Hyuk's Liquipedia page, but it doesn't say anything about his having a progamer sister. I really don't know =O

Really? What should the thread be called?

I honestly don't see how you can endorse that thread and call yourself a man. It's a complete disgrace to male and female progamers.

Not to worry, Arceus. Jewish pimps aren't into transvestites or transexuals.

I hope you weren't disappointed...

Hello again, Teamliquid.

I was searching through files on my computer earlier, and I found some nice pictures that I didn't put in my original post. I'm not sure why I didn't include these--maybe I felt I had too many already? Anyway, consider this latest comment a treat. Thanks again to all of you who commented on this thread last year. I hope you have a great summer and that you enjoy yourselves.

Yours truly,
Shalashaska_123

P.S. Unfortunately, the music video of the theme song for the 1st Ladies MSL was removed due to copyright issues. For future reference, the song is "Mosquito" by SR-71.

Great thread. Arima best looking female progamer! I want more pictures of her, so beautiful.
Also im noticing for quite some time that koreans have very similar faces.
For example:
l3etty second photo = Anytime
Navy second photo = Kwanro
Tulip first photo = Leta
and Carot first photo looking very similar but cant recall the progamer name.
Luv ya BroodWar!

This is a perfectly reasonable request, as I've only uploaded one photo of her. But to be honest, I was hoping no one would ask for more of her since I can't find anything about her anywhere--no VODs, no pictures, no personal website. Out of all the female progamers, Arima is certainly the most mysterious.

Speaking of the unknown, I was able to find more information about Fish. According to her page on YGosu.com, she has a personal website, http://cafe.daum.net/Isaclove, and the following list of accomplishments:

주요기록

2회 KGL리그 여성부 우승
2000 롯데리아배 여성최강 스타리그 8강
2000 KIGL 하계리그, 동계리그 정규리그 우승
2000 KIGL 추계리그, 동계리그 결선대회 준우승
2000 KIGL 왕중왕전 여성부 준우승
2000 KIGL 여성부 통산 승률 1위, 통산 다승 2위
iTV 서바이벌 리그 2위

Fish was actively playing Brood War during January's time (early 2000). Judging from all the 1's and 2's, I imagine that she was one of January's biggest rivals.
