since i see ALOT of people having router problems and trying to fix them. i see alot of them not succed becouse most guides yust miss 1 key component. its that they do not have a static ip. (even thou you only have a dhcp connection, you can set up 1 for the time you lease the ip)

this guide will only get over how to get the static ip for your pc, if you are looking for forwarding the port (which is only a part of getting to host) i suggest you will look on http://portforward.com/ since they nearly have all routers and guides how to open the port.

so go to windows and put into the command line "cmd" what will open administrator.
the next thing you want to put into there is "ipconfig /all" this will give you the information about the connection you are using now. you want to get the information about your current ipv4 adress subnetmask and standerdgateway. it will look something like this
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

than if you have to go the network centrum. yust follow the instructions i have in pictures below in the spoiler.
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading][image loading][image loading][image loading] when you are here you want to typ in all the information that you got from the adminstrator when you typed in ipconfig /all. if you do not know an alteritive server for your dns you should use your standerd gateway as dns server.

if you did do all this. you have now a static ip for your PC. not internet servers from your router. i hope this guide was usefull. please leave any comments below.

my settings where on dutch when i made this. i plan on updating it to english.

if there are still some issues. plz contact me at skype.

I have this problem and am intrested in fixing it with this guide, although I am curious this may seem like a dumb question but, what do you do once you have the static IP address? I have tried everything so I can host games and haven't been able to find any solution. Thanks for this!

you use it in your router settings when u set up the port forward. the reason you make a static ip is because most routers require a single static ip or ip range to forward the ports as opposed to just forwarding the port on every ip.

@ggzerg you host a game and you play happily your friends or random people if you have to port open ofc

ow i forgot to say that you need to check the "validate on close" box or to restart your pc if i am not mistaken.

I have wondered, for some time, how at Dreamhack I was able to host immediately. What magic did they work?? Thousands of PCs set up, and all able to host on BW. That can't be port forwarding, there's some kind of wizardry afoot!

well, i think they can since they all connect to 1 major server, and with the right pc settings (what is the problem when you have forwarded but still have lagg).

i did this with around 5 people already throu skype and they ALL had succes.

so hf playing guys

Wait... so you're saying I'm playing $10/month for a static ip when I can do it myself? Thanks lol!

well, you don't NEED an static ip. you can have the same options with a dynamic ip. but you give it some maintance. how long is up to you

No, that's probably not the same thing (if you're paying your ISP 10$ and not some random program). This guide only make your local IP static, which is not the same thing at all.

Oh, damnit! Thanks for clearing that up.

Paying your host for a static IP address will make your public IP not change. Normally, your public IP address is chosen from a set of available IP addresses and may change. This is useful if you're hosting a web server or similar but it won't have any affect on Starcraft hosting because anyone who wants to connect will find out your IP from the server list.

This option makes it so that your internal IP (which usually starts with 192.168) doesn't change (the router will always assign you the same IP). This is important if you configured port forwarding because you used your internal IP to specify which computer to forward to. If your internal IP changes then the port forwarding rules will specify an invalid IP to forward to and the router will not be able to forward incoming packets correctly. This is completely different from paying your host for a static IP address, and won't make your public IP address static.

Well I guess I am the only person in history that has done everything from portforwarding, this guide, and other guides, and still cant host games... T_T ! I wish there was some magical program that u could use that would make it so u can host games, then my life would be complete. It is so difficult to get games on BW without being able to host sometimes.... * tear * t_t

If this is true, we should seriously have a battle.net resurgence, the main reason a large part of the BW audience Didn't have a reliable method of playing games with each other

What I hate is that I'll configure my router to allow me to host games and then usually a month later, something happens and it won't let me host anymore. Then I have to reset it and do it all over again. Not THAT huge of an annoyance. But still an issue.
So wait? I'm bad? =(

I know it's redundant to ask this, but are you 100% certain your firewall and router are configured to allow inbound traffic on port 6112? This is the main thing. The testing cycle will probably be much easier if you have somebody who can sit around while you tweak stuff and help you test if the games you create can be joined.

LAN is very different, you are on the same subnet as other people so hosting is not a problem unless you have a firewall on your PC blocking inbound tcp 6112. The reason why you need "port forwarding" (known as port address translation to network guys) is because you are behind a router. That router has a public IP address that is routable on the internet, however your PC has a private IP address that is not routable on the internet, this is why you cannot receive packets "directly" : you are behind NAT (network address translation).

Without any "port forwarding this is what happens :

When someone wants to connect to your game he will send a request towards the public IP address of your router towards port 6112 tcp, when the router sees this he asks himself "uuuuh what's that ? i didn't see any connection that used this port previously, it must be trash i'm just going to drop it".

With PAT tho he will know that he has to forward all connection made to port 6112 tcp to the private IP of your computer, your computer will receive the packet and connection will be established since your comp is listening on port 6112 tcp.

Magic ? no
