Well, some of you might know me from the countless stream chats I've been on, on Twitch Tv. That is because I've watched every single game from last Proleague, Gambit's cup, ISL (including qualifiers) and Gem league (and the beginning of OSL). I see it as my way of pulling my own weight, so that since I'm not a good enough player, at least I can be a good enough viewer, supporting it that way.
However, after I heard about Korean progaming pretty much deciding to start playing SC2 I felt so sad. I went to my Terran practice partner with the goal to just drink as much as possible to forget about this whole thing. After a long night I finally got home, still hammered and I thought of something: As long as there is money, BW will have good tournaments. I remembered the team World project, and started thinking about what a joint league would look like. But I can't fix that. Then I realized what I could do:
There is definitely a possibility to get somewhere around 150 bucks from the state here in Sweden every year, as long as at least 5 swedes are in a registered computer gaming organization (Dreamhack is the largest example of this I think). This organization would then actively support a prize pool for tournaments/leagues. The more swedes in the organization (under 25 years old), the more money we get, typically the money is around $4 per member + the ~$150 that depend on tax levels.
If the organization we start would have a member fee (it indicates this being a serious organization according to the state policy) which would have to be at least 50 SEK ($7:50) for the swedes, then we would get more money from the state. We would get the awesome:
$600 every year(the raised basic amount because of the member's fee)
+ $7:50 per person(member's fee)
+ $9 per person (the raised pay from the state per member)
I couldn't find any sources in English, but here's the state funded organization's website ( the organization that will give our organization money) in Swedish with all the numbers I've mentioned.

Many of you will probably wonder why the state would just give you money and stuff like that. Well, you who think that probably don't know that Sweden has high living standards( free education and health care), high taxes and the largest publicly funded organization for young people: is a computer game and role-playing organization. There is an old policy here to support all organizations that "keep young people off the streets", which is what transitioned into this type of support from the state. Maybe you've heard of DreamHack? That's just one example of how these organizations can be built before becoming profitable.
We are registered as a gaming organization and now have a special type of bank account. This bank account is in practice owned by the Swedish government to ensure that what we do is non-profit and according to the the premises of our admission.
My thought is to support the tradition we call BW with the money.

How to sign up for Swedes who want to be members: the 3 easy steps + Show Spoiler +
Step 2: Pay the members fee of 50 kr (or more if you like)/ year to our organization account (the account is subject to Swedish Government scrutiny): it is a plusgiro with the number 1637966-1. When paying to a plusgiro you can choose to include a message to the receiver instead of OCR number. Here we need you to write your name so that we can see who is paying.
Step 3: You get a welcome text message (sms) from the Chairman who assigns you to a region where your events will be held based on the information you filled in about your residence. After that you will get text messages to your phone whenever something is happening in your area from your Regional Administrator. At the moment there are two regions: Stockholm and Gothenburg. Abjurer is RA of Gothenburg and Jaevlaterran is RA of Stockholm. If you wish to be a member of our skype group or our facebook group you just add "jaevlaterran" on skype or apply for the facebook group, and you will be accepted into them both.

We decided on: 1. The voting resulted in the alternative being "One big and several small tourneys" winning. We will host our own (not sponsor) flagship 1v1 tournament that will be a returning event if successful. Regarding the smaller ones they will be some "for fun tours" and some more serious types of BW that just haven't got the sponsors to get bigger tours. Exactly what type of tours will be revealed as they are organized but I can spoiler a little about them. We discussed tours involving some new maps, 2v2, team melee and Tandem Starcraft.
2. Sponsoring ISL4 As a result of the drama surrounding the organization of the SBWI NW we have decided not to primarily focus on sponsoring events where we can not fully control the organization. ISL4 is therefore not a priority (our own tours will be instead) but is left as a possibility depending on funds.
3. Website We have decided to get a proper website with all information on etc. to further improve our credability and organization. Mutisk will lead the web design team consisting of himself and vOddy. They are both studying web design and Mutisk will design this website as his final project in one course. Jaevlaterran has a server-computer that will work as the website's sever. Hopefully we can make this website available in mutliple languages (English, Russian most likely).
4. We will host a Brood Bar in Stockholm for watching the SSL finals at our new premise.

The members fee is 50 kr a year, but donating more is always welcome. I have myself tried this out by paying the members fee today. I noticed that if you pay with an online bank, your bank will in fact verify the account holder with the lines: "F120165-6, sbwi + my real name". You can thereby check that the SBWI's non-profit organization number "F120165-6", is the same as in the picture of the legal document proving our legitimacy below. This means that the account is not private. Since I'm the chairman of SBWI, my real name is listed too.
Account info for paying from a Swedish bank: Members fee: minimum 50 kr/year Plusgirokonto: 1637966-1 Instead of OCR-number you need to WRITE YOUR FULL NAME. Otherwise I have no way of knowing who's paid or not. (Foreign Members: more information shortly.)
I just got the bank account approved! Now I will register our members in the SveRok database online so SveRok knows how much to pay us. Next update is: I've got the money.
Where we are right now: we are registered as a gaming organization and can now apply for a special type of bank account. We're looking for two Regional Administrators Are you interested in being in charge of the activities in your area? Hosting events like Brood Bar(watching BW and drinking beer), LAN-parties or other events? PM me. I need one RA in Gothenburg and one in Malmo. All members will be assigned to an area depending on where they live. Their respective RA will be given contact information to his area's members to ensure that they will be notified of any events going on. New members will also easily get in touch with their area's BW-fans through this. My thought is like this:
1. New members PM me 2. I sign them up vOdToasT 3. I give their contact information to the RA 4. They are notified of local events, fans, players etc.
I just got all the papers I've been waiting for, from the Swedish Gov. Funding Org. They have accepted SBWI. This means that they will give us money as soon as we have a bank account connected to the SBWI. The papers for getting an organization-bound bank account were included with the rest of the papers. I'll fill them out tomorrow and send them to a bank. The admission papers look pretty fancy maybe I can upload photo.
So, I just got a call from the Swedish Government Funding Organization about if we need to register as an online organization (a lot of extra work and a different set of rules) or if we could just be a normal one. Apparently their vacation is over. She just said that if we didn't want to be an online organization, we could just be a normal one. She then said she'd send me the certificate proving that we are in fact legitimate. I'll post a photo when I get it. They tend to look pretty fancy^^.
First of all I've had the standard vacation here in Sweden of June-August just like the Swedish Government Funding Organization so everyone just chill. During this time of year bureaucracy simply couldn't go slower. The latest I've gotten from the Swedish Government is that they don't like us registering as a normal organization. They want us to register as an online organization instead, which to be honest is what we are. The problem that I hoped to avoid about this is that being an online organization is a little bit more work. Here is a quote from the Swedish Government Funding Organization's website (translated by me, here is the Source) on what we need to fix before we're accepted as an online organization:
1. The Organization needs to have a working website with rules, information, possibility for members to register, the board listed and the accountant as well (all elected last meeting) and the protocol from the founding meeting.
2. The chairman and the cashier need to watch two short instructional movies and answer a few check box questions about them.
3. The organization needs to have a plan for how its operations and the democratic aspect will be handled.
After that money starts flowing in according to their last email.

This is a great day. The papers have been filed and we are set to have a registered organization as soon as we are accepted by the Swedish government funding organization. All went super smooth with healthy discussion and a lot of ideas, fighting spirit and commitment. I told you so before, and am now proud to say that this is really happening. The Swedish Brood War Initiative has now been founded.
I've started the registration process, meaning the process where I register our real names etc. for the organization we get money from. This is of course the process where everyone expects to loose a significant amount of the members, since this is the true sign of actually committing. Let's prove that we are ready to commit!
As always, taxes come in somewhere when an organization wants to host events with prize polls. Apparently there is a rule that if it is under 1000 SEK ($150) per receiving person a year, the organization won't need to pay any taxes on the money they give away. If it were to be over $150, it gets quite tricky. I'm planning on giving the swedish tax department a call about this during the week to find out more.
Whether or not, unseen taxes would arise because of the receiver being potentially foreign I, at the moment don't know anything about and will check this. Nothing points at this, but I wouldn't be surprised. Since Sweden loves its taxes, these might be potentially higher than we'd like if we were to choose to host events with higher prize polls. It is ALL legal though, it just has to be bookkept in a much more strict fashion, and the taxes will have to be paid. This makes for some discussion on what type of events to spend our money on. We could potentially host many tax free events, with smaller prize polls, or a larger one with taxes. This will be decided on the founding meeting.
Since this restriction is per person, each year, I also need to double check that a person can win multiple times each year if we were to host multiple smaller events. This is more or less implied in what I've read so far, but not said outright. Another interesting fact here is that by this system, guaranteeing prizes for the top players that didn't win the tournament (runner up or top 5) might be "cheaper" since they could conveniently be paid with tax free money. So I guess our tournaments might be a little socialist style after all, since paying more people less is cheaper for the organization than paying one or two people larger sums of money. But as previously said, it seems to be a matter of taste for SBWI and will be decided by our members.
The taxes will of course have to be paid by the SBWI, not the winner! If we decide to go for the taxated choice here with larger prize polls, we'll just pay the taxes and that'll be that, so there's nothing to be scared of here. My interest here lies primarily in whether or not it will be worth paying the taxes to host larger events. Once I get some actual numbers, we can weigh this on our founding meeting. If people have opinions, you can write that in the thread, and they will be presented on our founding meeting even if the person isn't a member. This affects us all, as in how we want to enjoy BW tournaments.

I've checked this now and foreigners won't give the organization any extra funding from the state, however if you want to be a member anyways, the only thing you need to do is pay $7:50 each year and sign up here. This is not as effective as those getting funding from the state, but it might be an easy way to know that your money doesn't become part of corruption (These organizations are checked now and then obviously, and there is always an accountant with each organization). It would be illegal for any member to simply take the money.
I will post the account to which the money should be sent, when the account has been approved. It will be a special type of account, for non profitable organizations. These are also required by Swedish law, not to be used for individual gain or profit, and under bank scrutiny and heavy restrictions for anyone within the organization (outsiders can obviously not withdraw from it) to withdraw money. It must be clearly documented so that the members of the organization can check to see what their money has been used for as well, according to law. This will only have positive effects on the SBWI since we will be a legit organization with non profitable goals.
When money starts rolling in, I will post a complete budget, here on TL. There every single dollar's whereabouts and origin (donor) will be shown unless stated otherwise by the donor. Anonymous donations are fine, since they will add money (not a problem) which is clearly easy to document as an anonymous donor, not interfering with the credibility of others' money. Otherwise donations with a name (TL account will do) make sure you can see that your money is an actual part of the whole. This way the donors can also make sure, that their money gets put to the use, it was intended for.
Apparently there is an extra funding called Project funding that we could apply for as well. It's typically a $100-$200 extra that if we have a good project (tournament) we might get it. It seems to be hard to get it, but we might as well apply.
Since Barcraft seems to be stolen, I thought I'd call it Brood Bar. There is a possibility to go watch BW with other members in the Gothenburg and Stockholm areas. If you wish to be notified about events in your local area, you need to be a member. Your Regional Administrator (Abjurer for Gothenburg and Jaevlaterran for Stockholm) will automatically contact you when there is an event coming up. To simply attend an event, one does not need to be a member, but the ultimate decision is up to the Regional Administrator. An example might be when having Brood Bar at a real pub (not necessary to be a member) vs. in someones home (members only).
I own a projector and a pretty big screen. My apartment has a roof terrace (with view over Stockholm ofc^^) so we can watch it outside if it's in the summer (room for at least 20 people). Kinda like how we do with soccer in many countries, watching it outside and having a few cold ones. If you wanna come to watch it and aren't Swedish that's obviously fine. As long as you're a BW fan that's all that matters. Another important note is that most bars wouldn't' mind getting 40 extra guests watching a BW game. Maybe we can even establish a good relationship to a bar, so that we could have reoccurring events at the same place.
A good point by Xiphos that I hadn't thought about is using the SC2 Barcraft community to signal I might host Brood Bar since some of them might be interested as well. I became a member of the Facebook community for Barcraft in Sweden a while ago, hoping it would be any BW. I haven't seen any, but advertising there might be a good idea anyhow.
If we host this, there is something called Travel funding, that we could apply for. It's some money to help pay for the travel and we could get at least $15 per traveling member. I guess it is something at least.

I just wished there were sources that i could show you guys in English. I can't believe i didn't think of this before since I've run this type of organizations since i was like 16. Well including me we only need 4 members to pull it off but the more we get the more money we can offer. I wonder if more countries have this type of funding?
I'm pretty sure Britain doesn't... unfortunate really. I'm sure you can get more interest here, and maybe on reddit, but I would recommend a more relevantly titled OP, clearly outlining what you are wanting to achieve, and asking for help specifically in doing that.
Do the members have to be swedish though? Because the number of people watching/interested in BW is really small (which you probably are quite aware of), it's all about LoL nowadays. Still good idea, with some luck you might be able to do it.
Im sure i can get my bw friends to join. the members must be Swedish in order to receive funding from Swedish taxes for their project. But all the TL Swedes that i personally don't know should join for maximum amount of money. And saying that Lol is killing hw is total bs imho. I have met plenty of people who like sc2 and bw or only bw.
Regarding the title i can't change it for what i know. i chose it when i was still a bit drunk :-) but im sure it attracts more than another thread full of will to change but no practical ways that generate money. Im a pragmatic dude. I will deliver. Caring about marketing should be left to others. Ill collect the money.
My plan is to use the members data to make it possible to reach bw fans for events or such. I am thinking of inventing a new expression, brood bar. So we can organize meetings for beer and brood war. I've watched the pl finals with some friends with beer but this should be bigger. Im sure real fans in Sweden would take a bus to watch bw live in a bar.

My advice would be to visit there in time of SC2 events and just promote this initiative presumably that you only need to maximize the number of participants. And I am sure that most of them would be more than willing to support “e-sports”. If Barcraft have anything close resemblance to a standard sport venue, then there should be at least 100 potential recruits.
Good idea there Xiphos. I've been a member of the Barcraft community we have on facebook in Sweden. However it's more or less only SC2, but I could definitely advertise there, possibly go to a Barcraft to sell a little Brood Bar Thanks for the tip.

Free money just to have an organization that would support starcraft in Sweden as long as the project somehow promotes the idea that kids dont need to be on the streets. I think I want to move to Sweden now.
Is BW4LIFE too cheesy of a name ? Maybe we should just call it the BW initiative to show that we are a part of that project more or less? We need a name before Friday next week when im filling in all the papers.

It is a great idea, but remember that to be eligible for the money there is a little bit of crucial paperwork to be done, and mechanisms of bureacracy to ensure that the people that have signed up 1. First of all, trying to poke some holes in my boat, as a manner of speaking, while not backing it up is exactly what you are doing here. I makes my thread seem unserious for the person seeing this for the first time. This type of posting is what could possibly destroy this project. Only this type of posting could kill this organization by making it's members "disapear". That's why I will prove that all you said, was wrong, outdated or simply obvious in that we have to follow Swedish law. READ CAREFULLY!
This is the fourth organization of this sort I've created. The first organization with ~100 people, second ~200, and the last is ~25. The first two were one time event things, but the last one has now existed for more than a year and I have handed over that responsibility.

If you'd read the whole thread instead, this wouldn't have been something to answer for. They can still be members, as it doesn't say that they can't in the laws that regard SveRoK. I have never in my life met anyone except maybe hobos who doesn't have this. C/O works as well, so there is no possible way this is a problem.
About leaving a phone number for the swedish members. I think sharing our real phone numbers in an organization like this should not be problematic. It will, as previously mentioned in the thread, not be used for anything by SBWI. However, SveRoK(the state) will call a random amount of members to check that the organization isn't a fraud. Since we have no plan to be a fraud, this is not going to be a problem. During my 7 years within these organizations I have been called 2 times, and I was CEO most of the time!

If you read what I have written under foreign members, you will see that I have already explained this. This is not something hard, or unusual. Who wouldn't keep his/her finances in check in their real life? I happen to be taking my major in economics as well, not to say that my experience from previous organizations didn't teach me how to run these organizations economically. When I was 16 I ran the whole economy for a 100 person event.

I have by counting my personal BW friends, enough members to make this work (5 total which is minimum for the funding). This will again never be a problem.

This information is completely outdated and wrong. One meeting is all that is required, and not two weeks in advance. It was never something that had to public, nor on the Sverok site. We will surely have all the positions an organization requires, such as "Ordförande & Kassör" (CEO and Cashier). They are not required to be "firmateknare"(able to withdraw money and sign in the organizations name) anymore, that can be chosen freely at the meeting. "Recordings" where never required. Only notes from the meetings decisions which will ofc be posted here. Why wouldn't we take notes of our glorious meeting? Voting is obviously the only way to run an organization of this sort. Now since this will be the type called "internet organization" we won't need the physical presence of anyone really. It can be held online.
I did the paperwork last summer. It was not a problem.

Thank you all for the support! It is what, together with my love for BW, what keeps me going at 4:30 in the morning when reading about taxes. I've made an important update on what I've read so far about taxation of the prize polls. This affects all of the BW fans and I recommend checking it out, even though it sounds boring. Why? because I want to hear your opinions too, on what type of events you'd prefer SBWI to sponsor. SBWI is not sponsoring for any private interest, it's for the good of the BW community. So which type of sponsoring would you prefer?

Cool! We did this for a roleplaying group, and a juggling group in high school. This was like 10 years ago though. I wasn't much involved in the paperwork, but we got some money in both cases. It was not much work as a member. If you have done it before I guess you know how it works.

No. As long as 60% of the organization are under, people over 25 can contribute as well. Other donations are of course possible if members from abroad want to participate.

I've already sent an email but if you know what the total tax percentage we would have to pay would be, with all the different taxes (arbetsgivaravgift etc), assuming we are giving more than 999 SEK to a foreign person, that would help.

For all of you who aren't Stockholmers, read the Travel Funding part. Traveling to STHLM might not be as bad as you think if we're watching a match together in STHLM. Otherwise, I'm sure if people are from the same place others can meet up in smaller groups across the country. Like Gothenburg hosting their own thing etc. Why is our country so big, and we so few... 9 million inhabitants in Europe's 4th largest country or whatever is kinda ridiculous.
I live in Sweden, I love Broodwar, and I feel pretty heartbroken over the recent Korean development, especially since JD dropped out of what is probably the last OSL ever... I must say I feel kinda skeptical about a swedish bw tournament though. I mean no doubt it can be arranged and so on, but I'm afraid I might be too spoiled by godly korean play that anything less than that will seem rather bland.
Still, I would like to support the project (even though I'm over 25), if nothing else but for the chance of enjoying a beer at the Brood Bar and reminisce over JvF etc.. I hope there are more BW fans in Malmö, I don't really go to Stockholm that often...
Oh another Sceptic!^^ Well, what type of tournaments we choose to support will be discussed on our first meeting. The decision is all ours. Participation via skype for members is obviously going to be a possibility. I have 100 Mbit connection, so no worries. If doing something with the Koreans is what we want to do, I personally have only seen one interesting project on that, which was the team world all stars, linked in the OP. We decide what exactly our organization will do obviously, but this is for supporting the BW scene and make it more enjoyable.

SVEROK probably got all that covered, otherwise you could always contact Fnatic or whatever and they´ll sort it out, im sure they wont mind. I have alot of school up until the 23rd but after that ill see what i can do to help. Until then - cheers (And also, to you that spoiled OSL, go fly a kite).
Yeah, I sent SveRok an email too. Neither the tax department nor SveRok has answered with any exact numbers yet. It will probably come in during the week.
Update: I've added more on members. Since we are in the transition from the "future members list" into the "real members list" the people who are now registered by real name, social security number and other personal information are now written in bold. They are the people who will be invited to participate on the founding meeting and who have decided to be a part of the initiative in their real lives. In just two days, most have responded. This shows the commitment of the members of SBWI. I am proud to be swedish at this day. Thank you members.

I've PM'd you some info. Future member means that you wish to join. Real member means that you've submitted your personal information for the registration. Being 25 is not a problem, plus we can always register you before turning 25.

@BWalma There's info about it in the thread under one of the spoilers. Foreigners can be members or simply donors if they like. However the state of Sweden will not give us extra funding for those people. I will first and foremost create the organization in Sweden, then I'll post the required info in the thread for foreign donors. Any size of donation will be possible. The only difference between a member and a donor is that we'll keep you in the loop of the organization and that you'll have the possibility to participate in decision making or meetings or so (prob. skype). It might be a simple way for people around the world to know that their donation, no matter the size, will not be a part of corruption etc. since that would be illegal and under severe scrutiny.

I just read it. That is fine. How to donate? I'd be willing to give like 7 - 10 USD per month but how do I donate / become member?
I think we just communicate with one of the leaders to set up the regularly-occuring transaction. This is a wonderful initiative. Once I am a bit more settled I will most certainly be donating a healthy amount to this organization. The first scene was fan-created and funded before becoming the well-organized and professional scene we saw happen in Korea. Don't see why we can't do that again.

For Swedes: Alright now I've set a date for the founding meeting. Join on Skype, PM me your thoughts in advance or just be there. If you wish to join on skype, send me a PM beforehand so I can manage the number of connections. If you wish to come to the meeting physically, send me a PM beforehand. If you don't want to attend, you can still PM me your thoughts before the meeting and I will express them to the attendees. If you don't want to come, and you are a registered member (your name is in bold) you don't have to do anything. To be eligable for this meeting if you are swedish, your name needs to be in bold on the members list. Otherwise PM me.
Non-Swedish people: If you want to donate money in the future and still be a part of the organization that's fine. The above counts you in too. A donor is someone who just gives money and a donor doesn't need to concern him/herself with this meeting at all really. A foreign member is like a donor but interested in being a part of the actual organization in person too. A foreign member needs to tell me that he/she wants to be one when he or she wants to start donate. Since there isn't any bank account yet to donate to, all who just sign up for future donations (signing up minimum 5 hours before the meeting) can attend in any chosen way. Foreign members will be involved in all our future work, decisions etc. if they wish to. Becoming a foreign member will be possible all year long, but these meetings only happen once a year. To check if you are eligable for this meeting, check the list of foreign members. If your name isn't there and you wish to donate in the future, PM me.

26 years old German here who's kind of interested despite coming primarily from the SC2 scene, but I have love for the good old games from last millenium, so let's see how this develops
@Abjurer Yeah, maybe we shouldn't bump this thread so much. But on the other hand, since people are still bumping the "post BW plans" thread, I really don't think we need to worry that much. I'd like to believe that seeing this thread progressing, not necessarily reading all of it all the time, is something good for the BW community. This is a positive thread, not the moping style that has plagued these regions of late. We just need to stay sharp and not over-bump this thread so that it destroys possibilities of other hot subjects.
@TehRei I recommend you being there physically. The more "IRL" we can make this organization, the better. We who live in the same areas should definitely meet if possible, if not just for the fun of meeting other awesome people, but so that we can plan easier and get a tighter network.

This is a great day. The papers have been filed and we are set to have a registered organization as soon as we are accepted by the Swedish government funding organization. All went super smooth with healthy discussion and a lot of ideas, fighting spirit and commitment. I told you so before, and am now proud to say that this is really happening. The Swedish Brood War Initiative has now been founded.
Regarding Participation on Skype: Because of the amount of people wanting to converse at the same time as the meeting went on I've decided to include all of you skypers separately. Having 5 people talking on a physical meeting at the same time as 5 people on skype is quite difficult and especially not fair to the people on skype when it comes to getting your opinions through. A large part of the meeting was just filling out formalities in Swedish and perhaps not as suitable for English speakers.
I am now ready to receive calls on skype so I can explain one-on-one what the meeting included and what people's opinions were on all the questions discussed on the meeting. If you feel different than the group on any matter (all decisions were unanimous ) we will of course review the decision and take it up for discussion again when we all meet next time (near future). If no unanimous decision can be made on the subject, a majority vote will decide the SBWI's plan of action. The budget has also been made so that there is room for other ideas, so if the skypers wanted to add an idea: there is more than enough money for that, all in the service of equal opportunities.
I will post a full summary of the meeting during the week after all the skypers have had the opportunity to speak their view, so that the decisions will be final. This seems to be the only way to guarantee democratic fundamentals so that we all in SBWI can completely agree on the decisions, before making them final.

Awesome people, we all had a great time even though there were a lot of formalities to be taken care of. Believe me when I say that the people who didn't attend were missing out!
Foreign BW still has a good couple of years to go, there's a lot of exciting stuff happening in the near future and I'll be happy to show any and all sceptics how wrong they are in thinking otherwise!
Must say that I think this is a terrific ide you guys are pulling off here. Brood War is truely a concept of art and to see people still endorsing it makes me glad. Although I don't play it myself anymore I do still enjoy to watch an occasional VOD of the old BW games.

Basically I'm working 08-17 every weekday, and my stepsister is graduating so we're having a party for her this saturday... I might be able to get off work early or leave after an hour or two of the party, depending on what day it is, but yeah, things are looking kinda bleak here =/

My stepsister's graduation party starts at 4 or 5, so I figure I'll be able to be supportive and social and shit for a couple of hours and still make it on time to watch some epic PvZ games with ma bros
Edit: I think Amazonic was going to tag along as well, but most of my other BW-interested friends are either having graduation parties, attending their sisters/girlfriends/cousins party, or being hungover from being at said party the day before. So it might not be the best weekend in terms of audience, but then again beer and some highlevel BW tends to make for amazing times being had, so who cares

IMO nothing strange is going on. Another nice thing about Sweden apart from free education and healthcare is the industrial vacation time that a lot of people got, which this year is 28-31.

The winters are cold, and the summers are great. That activity and bureaucratic response times becomes worse during this time of the year is not unexpected at all. I assume that activity will resume when August/September comes around or the paperwork gets processed; unless the Stockholmers do a OSL finals thingie first.

I was thinking we'd create a group on Skype as well, so everyone has each other's skype address too

Lol in fact i was 99 % true it was legit. And these things do tale time indeed. The only important thing is that once the organisation is up and running final financially, then the group decideds on tournaments and events, which i think it will be!
Just a question of waiting it out then and dealing with things as they come along.

I was there at the meeting and its not a scam, stop spreading lies founded on nothing but speculation based on nothing. No one has payed any membership fees an no money has yet to be received from the state. In Sweden the government moves very slow, specially in the summer.
If it was a scam it would be the funniest one I've ever seen(a scam to trick ppl into come to your house in order to drink beer and watch video games with you).
Hi everyone! Glad to see that my thread hasn't completely died (lol to the scam claims, since nobody has paid a dime yet (except me for the beer last time) and many know where I live). Ok so, I've had my vacation (in Europe there is an industrial vacation time, which in Sweden means no work in June-August) and just got back from Italy. My computer broke fairly recently so that has greatly hindered my options to update as well as playing.
The latest I've gotten from the Swedish Gov. funding organization is that we might need to get a website since we are online based. This is because it needs to be possible for people from anywhere in Sweden to join and read about what we do. It is related to the organization being "democratic" in that: if the organization is mostly online, then people who live in the woods cannot be discriminated against, so to speak. They want this fixed before the funding. Getting a website for this might not be such a bad thing after all even though it makes life a bit more difficult for me.

Right now I have an exam coming up in a few days so I will not post until afterwards. If someone in the SBWI has knowledge about website making then please make this known by posting in the thread. Maybe we can get our own directory on the BW-initiative website that L_master worked on? I'll have to check with SveRok (Swe. Gov. Funding Org.) if that would cut it or if it needs to be our very own.

If you're getting a website done, I would suggest that you have it professionally made so that it actually has useful content and isn't a burden to surf to. That way the organization could gain exposure which is good for you, good for Brood War.

I second this. A website makes a very important first impression, and a bad one can turn most of your traffic away immediately.

There is always the trusty Google Sites which is pretty straightforward to use but If you could get floi's web devloper bud to help out that would be fantastic, also If you need a graphic artist for overlays and such Hawaiianpig is awesome for that or you could contact my graphic designer but it all depends on if you have funds to buy these things ^_^
@floi ill need to talk to the rest of the initiative about it but i think most people just want the first money to go to tournaments and players. However getting a website is crucial for our success so this needs to be done right. Im looking into the different possibilities and i appreciate your help. Having a web designer who knows about starcraft might come in handy.

Well Stylish was a well known player in the terran area. He made a lot of VODS/replay analysis/tips etc... to help terran youngsters to improve. I think it'll be great if you could contact him, he has a lot of experience in BW... His nickname on tl is StylishVODS if I remember correctly.

With the back-up of the community and the leadership of Javlaterran i see no way that this initiative won' t be on the roll soon.
From my point of view, i see no point in spending the org money on making that website which i understand is fundamental to the organisation and to show the good people at the Swedish goverment the effort being put in this (apart from the effort that has been already put) :D There must be a web-master out there who loves BW and is willing to chip in his time and effort. The only money that should be spent on that should be to buy an adress, which doesn' t cost much.

@ Abjurer: How about you get to be in charge of the Gothenburg section? Hosting get-togethers down there? We really need to get someone in both Gothenburg and Malmo, so we can have sections in all bigger Swedish cities. Kinda like any respectable pyramid scheme (kidding). Then new members can go straight to you, you get their contact information and tell them about events when they happen. In the beginning this will just be about hosting evenings with beer and a TV. I've been doing this in Stockholm with the phone numbers to the people in the Stockholm and Uppsala area, just texting them all what's up.

Yeah about that... I managed to crash my computer while playing around with recovery partitions... Now I'm back into linux, and have at least gotten my computer running again. However getting BW to run well on ICCUP seem rather hard. Hopefully it'll be up until next time.

With money that you have. It might be possible to run SBWI tournaments funded by your organization. Get a sponsored stream on Twitch and add adds to the YouTube VODs you could get additional funding just from people spectating. Won't be a ton but a way nonetheless to get more funds if your looking for that. Is it possible to sign up now? As I am on that list of foreigners?

3 hatch hydra on nachos sounds delicious. I'd even like 2 hatch hydra or 2 hatch muta, but I like to have more cheese on my food than most people. I don't like cheese in game at all, though. ^_^

What I want to know that since DreamHack is situated in Sweden, what are the chances of BW to be played again in the event as the Swedish communities seems to have harvested a substantial amount of cash (question mark)* I think that would definitely help in revitalizing the BW scene.

To be honest, I have no idea on what the chances are of playing BW on DH again. However if I were to speculate I would add a few things:
Even though Sweden is 9 milion people, the E-sport community is pretty small. Some contacts of the SBWI might make this easier to accomplish. I might even know some people.
We will in fact have around $1000 within the next few days with around $1000 more coming in after january sometime. I don't think we will use the first "batch" for any DH tourney, but who knows about the second one.
There is a special funding that we can apply for if we organize something like this. It might give us some extra money from the state.
International donors might be interested to donate to this specific event.
We can apply for travel funding if Swedish members wish to travel there to watch it. This might make it cheaper for people to attend. (This might make Oya more likely to show up^^)
I'll see if I can get in contact with the DH organizers to see what the possibilities are and I'll get back to this thread.
A completely different thing that is not too serious of a project: on Sunday a friend of mine is gonna bring over some computer parts. We are gonna build a server with that. I was planning on using it for the SBWI-stream^^

My internet at home has been shit because I've had to use wireless crap, which basically made ICCup unplayable. I'm just curious of how many others are planning to be there? It's a great idea and possibly the quickest way for me to be not-terrible at BW but I'd still feel a bit bad if we're 3 people, of which I'm the only god-awful one ^^
On a related note, are people up for another BroodBar anytime soon? I was thinking I'd volunteer being at my place so that Jaevlaterran doesn't have to act the host every single time. On the other hand I live a short ways south of Stockholm, and while there's buses going pretty much 24/7 it might not be as convenient for some. I just thought I'd throw that out there in any case, if people are interested we'll find some event and set a time -- if not, then we wont.

That's our goal! As we're now officially in business it's more a question of which tournaments/events we're going to sponsor, and when. There's more than one member in SBWI however, and choosing what to sponsor has to be at least somewhat of a collective decision.
To answer your question in a more direct fashion: Yes we will sponsor and/or host tournaments, and we'll try keep you and everyone else on TL updated as soon as we can.
I can't personally make any promises, but there are several things being worked on atm, for instance: getting a BW-tournament at DreamHack is looking possible -- although that isn't something that will happen in the next few weeks. Hopefully we'll be able to get something going in the nearest couple of weeks though, but as I said it's too early to make any promises about when. For what it's worth, the thing that I can promise is that there's a minimum of 5-6 people (likely far, far more) in SBWI who are willing to invest a lot of their own time and money to keep the foreign scene going and spreading the awesomeness that is BW to anyone and everyone

DH ran the matter all the way up to the top, until it came to one guy who said no. They are not interested in hosting any BW tournaments at the moment, not even for the "sake of good esport".

We have had a Brood Bar event.
I have now put together the server that will broadcast my future brood war channel.
AleXoundOS (and some me) have installed most of the linux software on the server and we have done the first test broadcasting. Still a bit of tuning remains, but in general things worked out great.

Yea that's what we do. Sponsoring BW events with emphasis on the foreign scene. We have been discussing other alternatives on how to use money to promote BW, but right now it's just tournaments.

We are currently holding $968,52. After paying for SBWI Nation Wars we will be $968,52-$300 = $668,52. Next year we will most definitely get around $1000 more since it is a new year.
Which means that, we have to decide what to do with our amazing $1668,52!
This is also excluding any possible donations from foreign contributors as well as Swedes choosing to donate some extra money on top of the members fee. If you want to be able to affect the decision on what our money is spent on you need to donate money (any sum is welcome but $7,50 each year is most common). In that case you have the opportunity to PM me your wishes and it will be counted as a vote on the meeting. You will also be informed about what the final decisions were.

I just got an email about this tourney that the Swedish gov. wants to support in esport. The guy in charge told me the esports included in the tour hadn't been decided yet. And then he asked me which esport we wanted to organize/participate in and I ofc said "Starcraft: Brood War, and I seriously do not mean SC2 when I say that. If there is SC2 instead of BW, 99% of our members have no interest in organizing/participating/watching.". He is probably discussing this with his superiors as we speak but who knows? Maybe we will see some BW on Swedish national television (and on their website)

Well right now I've just booked a place for watching the tls finals. We're gonna have a video projector and they sell beer and snacks there.
Other than that we are more or less gearing up for a couple of things and more will be revealed when more information has been gathered. This so we can make some super quick decisions; all of us by 1) reading the supplied info 2) answering previously prepared questions
Also we've had a couple of get-togethers. This has led me to see some of the resources we have in terms of education and skills among the Stockholm guys. I hope to use these in the near future, but I'll have coordinate this first.

We have sent the prize money to the Polish national team aka the winners of SBWI Nation Wars.
Today at 8 we are meeting up to watch the TLS finals at our new premise. It is a cellar with black walls for a cinema feeling which hopefully will work well with my projector (We will rent this place with other money than that of the SBWI: since that will exclusively go to sponsoring tournaments).
This place is like a mixture between a store and a pub. During daytime they sell board games and such and during evening they have gaming nights where they also sell beer, snacks, all kinds of sodas, coffee etc. We will be renting it as such, but instead of playing board games, we will be watching BW. We have our own entrance and key and since I work there we can stay there for as long as we like.

Well there's about 10 guys who show up in different constellations but since the TLS finals was on a Swedish national holiday (easter eve is kinda a family thing) we weren't gonna meet up but three guys showed up most of the time before we got this new place our old place was overfull. now i reckon we have at least place for 30 people so possibly we can go all in on marketing our events

Good luck. I am pretty sure that a lot of Swedish folk who currently play SC2 would possibly show up, but as you said it has to be marketed a little bit better.

I am definitely interested! I sent a text message to the members of SBWI in the Gothenburg region, the interest doesn't seem to be that high. I suspect that the first event is always much harder to get off the ground though.

I'll also be bringing this up in person at the meeting on Sunday the 21st, but I figure I might as well announce my intentions in the thread as well . If you have no idea who I am, then you're either not living in Stockholm, or you haven't been to any SBWI-events yet (in both cases: get your act together!) If you do live in the Stockholm area though, we've probably met at one BroodBar or another, I'm the blond, doritos-loving, skinny, beer-snob who usually gets into heated arguments with Jaevlaterran about whether or not the build being used is an FD. I'm not a professional as far as managing an organization's economy goes, but I'm not completely without experience either. Perhaps most importantly, I'm willing to put a lot of time and effort into SBWI, since BroodWar is my passion and deserves nothing less than all I have.

Protocol: With the exception of general discussion, this was what was decided:
1. The voting resulted in the alternative being "One big and several small tourneys" winning. We will host our own (not sponsor) flagship 1v1 tournament that will be a returning event if successful. Regarding the smaller ones they will be some "for fun tours" and some more serious types of BW that just haven't got the sponsors to get bigger tours. Exactly what type of tours will be revealed as they are organized but I can spoiler a little about them. We discussed tours involving some new maps, 2v2, team melee and Tandem Starcraft.
2. Sponsoring ISL4 As a result of the drama surrounding the organization of the SBWI NW we have decided not to primarily focus on sponsoring events where we can not fully control the organization. ISL4 is therefore not a priority (our own tours will be instead) but is left as a possibility depending on funds.
3. Website We have decided to get a proper website with all information on etc. to further improve our credability and organization. Mutisk will lead the web design team consisting of himself and vOddy. They are both studying web design and Mutisk will design this website as his final project in one course. Jaevlaterran has a server-computer that will work as the website's sever. Hopefully we can make this website available in mutliple languages (English, Russian most likely).

tbh I think that bw needs more classic tournaments. In last few years there were only few major tournaments + ofc mighty defiler tours. Too many D and C ranks tours/leagues, invitational tours, tours where forbidden is to build something or only mirrors etc instead normal ones. I prefer open tours with some cool map pool and interesting format + some prize pool to compete for ^^

I agree with you, and this is something I briefly touched upon a month ago when we had our yearly meeting. When it comes to filling a certain niche though, it gets complicated. Defiler is an awesome weekly tournament that fills a very clear niche. So we don't want to hold a tournament that competes with Defiler in terms of timeslot or format (this would alienate players and viewers alike for no good reason).
Then we have the TLS, another awesome tournament that fills a clear niche. Scheduling is not impossible here, but might be a hassle at times, since we don't want players or viewers being forced to choose one tournament over the other. As if that's not enough, the TL community doesn't have an enormous amount of casters, and the casters we do have also have other obligations and interests besides casting BW (at least I think they do).
I believe Defiler and TLS are the biggest currently running 1v1 tournaments. What SBWI needs to do is figure out how our 1v1 tournament(s) can fit into the current tournament-climate (for lack of a better word).
Before I start drifting too much off-topic, I'll get back to your post:
We will definitely hold "normal", 1v1, open tournaments.
We want to support the map making community, meaning that we aim to include newly created maps in the map pool of (hopefully) all our tournaments.
Format is a more complex question. It is one of the things that differentiates one tournament from another, but it shouldn't be there only to make a tournament stand out from the rest. It needs to be fair to the players, approachable to viewers and players alike and it needs to be easy to grasp in order to avoid misunderstandings and needless confusion.
We want to have as generous of a prize pool as we can afford. A high prize pool obviously adds more incentive to participate, and also helps foster a competitive spirit among the participants.
However, there are other things that also needs to be taken into consideration:
Catering to a wide audience. 1v1 tournaments like Defiler targets a fairly specific audience. Weird 1v1 tournaments like Gem League targets another (although I'm sure I'm not the only one who enjoys watching both). We also want to host 2v2 tournaments in the future, which is yet another type of audience. We can't limit ourselves to just hosting one of the above -- we're likely gonna mix it up a bit.
Casters are a limited resource.
Graphic designers (to make banners, cheerfuls, logos, etc) are even more scarce.
Other stuff. The above is just what I could come up with on the top of my head.
This isn't reason enough to be pessimistic though. The last couple of weeks have probably been hectic for many, as the last weeks of the spring term tends to be for students. With beginning of summer, as people get more free time, I hope we can start hosting tournaments. If nothing else, that's a personal goal for me.
Hopefully that shed some light on the reasoning of SBWI. If anyone has any questions or suggestions regarding future tournaments, feel free to post them in this thread. I can't promise to answer all questions, and as far as suggestions go I can only guarantee that those from SBWI-members will be discussed. + Show Spoiler +
The reason for that is simply that all suggestions brought up within the organization will, regardless of topic, always get some sort of response. Whereas this is a forum thread, so it's possible that I, or someone else on the board, forget to respond or don't have access to the internet or something like that.
Obviously, if you have a really good idea we'll implement it regardless of whether or not you're member ^^

Sounds like you have given this a lot of thought and have some pretty good ideas of what you want. My opinion is that you should consider a team league to fill the void left by no more gambits cup. Also this would allow for a set of 2v2 to add some variety. Best of luck!!

SBWI sponsoring a team league is not completely unrealistic, but it's also something that needs to be discussed internally before any decision is made.
You might be wondering what "discussed internally" actually means in this context, so I'm going to explain exactly how the situation is right now and what needs to be done before we have a definitive answer to this question.
2 days ago I spoke with Jaevlaterran about a smaller SBWI-tournament which I wanted us to do. Prior to us having this conversation, another SBWI member (I think his name on TL is Abjurer? sorry :$) had suggested a format in which the top players of all teams represented in Gambits Cup would battle it out in a 1v1 Single Elim setting. I was super excited after he had posted this in our Facebook group. What I wanted to hear was what Jaevlaterran thought of this idea, and also if I could increase the proposed price pool a bit, since this format called for something slightly more impressive.
After we had discussed this other tournament, I carefully and very smoothly said something along the lines of: "... is there even a small notion of a possibility that maybe we might, for our bigger tournament later on, you know, perhaps host something like a team league sort of like, I dunno, gambits cup or something, maybe?" That's a pretty weird way to ask a question, I know, but I swear to god, that's pretty much how I went about asking his opinion. I'm exaggerating a lot less than I care to admit here, and it gets even more comical when taken into account what he answered me with: "Yeah, why not? Us hosting the new Gambits Cup would be awesome."
I realize that this post contains more time travel than the average episode of Doctor Who, BUT, going back to why I liked the idea proposed by Abjurer; (1) I really miss gambits cup, and (2) I'm hardly the only one feeling this way. Obviously, doing the full monty and hosting a new team league would be even cooler than simply hosting a commemorative, one time only tournament. Remember the "internal discussion" thing I mentioned earlier? Even though both me and Jaevlaterran are interested in hosting a team league, we actually haven't discussed this properly with the rest of the organization. This would be fine if we didn't value democracy in SBWI, which, incidentally, we do -- even when it's inconvenient. So... I should probably go do that asaply...
... but before that I'm going to do something awful. I'm going to pose another rhetorical question. Why are you telling me all of this? Because, believe it or not, your opinion matters to us. Without the BW-community, SBWI wouldn't have had any reason to exist. The whole point of creating SBWI was, and still is, to give something back to that same community. The relationship between SBWI and the rest of the foreign BroodWar scene is certainly of the give-and-take variety, especially when you take into account all of the donations we receive from fellow BW-fans. If those fans want another Gambits Cup, then there's just no way for us to ignore that.
The donations we have received so far, combined with the subsidies from the Swedish government, means SBWI should be able to provide a price pool that is both fair and exciting for the participating players. The casters, the mapmakers and LR-posters are all there in the community. An anti-abuse team, referees and all other behind-the-scenes workers is something SBWI can fix.
So what's stopping us?
If we decide to go through with this: nothing really. It's going to be a lot of work though, which is why I'm ending this post with a request. One request and one question, which is not rhetorical by the way.
What do you think about SBWI hosting a new team league? Good or bad, any feedback is appreciated!

Another way of contributing is making a donation to us. SBWI is a non-profit organization, meaning, in this case, that any donation goes directly to a tournament's price pool. We do not use donated funds to hire web developers to make our website. We don't use your money to buy beer for our BroodBars. Also, my bills are still being paid for with my money (sadly). I would like there to be one set of 2v2 like in NW. There are plenty of good 2v2ers out there that shouldn't be left out. Also, I do recall Nation Wars having semi-entertaining 1v1 games at best but amazing 2v2 games. Anyone else remember the Tokyoa 23 kill mutalisk?
I'm kinda surprised to see all this 2v2 hate to be honest :p Obviously we aren't going to pick a format that everyone but me and Jaevlaterran hates, but still... Also, keep in mind that the SBWI team league is still in the pre-planning stage, meaning that nothing has been decided yet. In other words, feel free to leave any suggestions and criticisms. It's a lot easier for us to design a format that's "right" from the beginning, rather than making something we think would be cool and then redoing it dozens of times until it works for almost everyone involved.
I check back on this thread pretty much on a daily basis, and while I won't be able to respond to every single post, I will be able to read them all.

Can someone explain the bo7 + ace format to me? In what cases would a ace match be necessary after a played out bo7?

This, basically. It sucks big time, but we're simply lacking in manpower atm (this was made painfully obvious during Summer Tour). Most of our members are either on vacation or working during the summer break - both of which are valid excuses of course, but at the end of the day the result is still that there aren't any cool SBWI events going on.
SBWI isn't dying though, so that's one thing you don't have to worry about.
On a related note, since we're only missing manpower, hit me up if you have a lot of time on your hands. Actively helping make events happen is probably the only guaranteed way to see more tournaments.
Yea we're all having vacations etc. We will probably have a meeting about the possibility of hosting the next team league as soon as the Swedish industrial vacation time ends. That will be around the 1st of September.

First of all Sweden is all into the national economic theory on social capital. Since organizations are a great way to improve social capital in a country the Swedish government funds some of them.What they fund mostly is 2 types of organizations: Either youth organizations or so called study circles. Study circles are a group of people who just meet up and study something together, such as let’s say knitting. They meet up, teach eachother how to knit etc. and just hang out. Then the gov will support this so they have money to buy coffe, fabrics or whatever, some cookies etc, but in my case it is that we study BW and use the money to support tours to study from. We meet up and watch BW, play BW. This, although we in practice are a youth organization still. The youth organization part derives from the fact that sweden had a lot of alcoholism back in the day and anything the will keep the kids away from the streets and “occupied” is good. However restrictions on non-drinking etc. doesn’t exist anymore. Nowadays it is mostly about young people learning how to organize things and have something to do, meet friends etc and the Swedish government funds this. [...]

We are not planning to transfer more as it is the amount we decided on. I just said "already transfered" because I transfered the day after we held the meeting.
I will be main organizer of the team league and I am hoping to get it started sometime around 1-2 months from now. Our smaller tours will fill the gap of time that it will take to organize the team league.

I can't say much since I'm not directly involved with the team league stuff, but from the little I've heard it's progressing smoothly. But, seeing as manpower is as thin of a resource as ever, I don't think there's an ETA yet (please correct me if I'm wrong ^^).

We decided on the map pool yesterday. The fundamentals that were discussed were that the pool should be: as many tilesets as possible 2, 3 and 4 player maps not 3 versions of FS gameplay should be different on most of the maps, producing variety in the gameplay
also format seems to be 6 games + ace.
I have contacted all relevant teams and we might be seing some new teams this season as well as the oldies still in business. All in all very good response with most teams just saying "yes, we'll see you there".

I don't recall all the numbers right now since we keep money on both a paypal account and a normal one and right now in 3 currencies. But I have made calculations on this, and we are fine with spending this much. Donations we get right now will mostly be used to finance things for next spring.

I know that this particular thread is fairly inactive, but it seems like the best place to ask, I was wondering if you guys have anymore weekly tournaments like the SBWI Summer Tournament planned and do your funds even allow for that?
I've basically had my hands full since I started college... That being said, I haven't been busy enough to warrant being almost completely inactive for the past 11 months. I'll try to contact some of the other guys this week, and see what's going on. Even if many of us are busy with real life-stuff I'm sure we could get something going. I don't think we'll be hosting any huge league or a new nation wars in the coming months, but there should be enough time and resources for some smaller events at least.
I can't promise anything like that though, since I haven't talked with anyone else in SBWI yet, but I will try to have a status-update for you guys by the end of the week (possibly earlier, we'll see).

No needs to apologize, SBWI sponsored and organized a few nice events already, nothing to proof or . Better you guys take your time to come back and do a relaxed tournament, rather than some hasty stuff only because there's people asking.
I waited a bit longer with posting an update in the hope of having some good news to share with you. Unfortunately, I don't have that much to report. I got a few answers from other SBWI members on facebook, but I still haven't heard anything from some of the "higher-ups" of the organization.
Basically, we're still at the same place we've been for the last couple of months. I'll continue to try and get a hold of the others, but SBWI is still sort of on ice for the moment. This doesn't mean SBWI is dead, as there are still people interested in doing BW stuff. It does mean that I have no idea when/how we'll return.
Hopefully I'll have something more cheerful to share next time =/
